ASTM Committee presents Award of Merit to Paul D. Roman.

Paul D. Roman, ASTM member since 1984 and executive director of the New Jersey EMT Registry in Shrewsbury, NJ, received ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from Committee F30 on Emergency Medical Services. This honor was in recognition of Roman's leadership and expertise in development of national consensus standards covering equipment, training, personnel, and communications in emergency medical services sector. NIST holds Cybersecurity Framework Workshop.

Recognizing that national and economic security of the U.S. depends on reliable functioning of critical infrastructure, the President, under Executive Order 13636 "Improving the Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity" directed NIST to work with stakeholders to develop a voluntary framework for reducing cyber risks to critical infrastructure. On July 10–12, 2013, NIST held 3rd Cybersecurity Framework Workshop, hosted by University of California San Diego and the National Health ISAC. Read More

Fraunhofer and UConn develop Center for Energy Innovation.

Fraunhofer USA, together with the University of Connecticut, developed the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation to develop advanced technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management, and distribution through contract research. Fraunhofer and UConn research will concentrate on modern functional materials, such as metals, ceramics, micro- and nanostructures, as components for fuel cells and electrolyzers. Read More

EPA Releases Software that helps reduce water pollution.

National Stormwater Calculator will help property owners, developers, landscapers, and urban planners make informed land-use decisions to protect local waterways from pollution caused by stormwater runoff. Desktop application estimates annual amount of stormwater runoff from specific site based on local soil conditions, slope, land cover, and historical rainfall records. Users can select different scenarios to learn how specific green infrastructure changes can prevent pollution. Read More

SPE Announces Expanded Parts Competition for 2013 ACCE.

Organizing committee for SPE Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition (ACCE) announced second parts competition will be held at this year's show, which is scheduled for September 11–13. Expanding on last year's single award, 2013 contest will recognize one winner in each of 3 categories: Body Exterior and Body Interior and People's Choice. NA Robotics Companies Set Records for first half of 2013.

According to statistics released from RIA, North American (NA) robotics companies set new sales records through June of 2013. Total of 10,854 robots, valued at $679.3 million, ordered from NA robotics companies in first 6 months represents 1.9% increase in units over same period in 2012. Shipments to NA customers through June totaled 11,308 robots, valued at $715.1 million, breaking first-half records set in 2012 by 11.0% (units) and 10.4% (dollars). Read More

ASTM International honors Michael Brandt of Alcoa Inc.

Michael Brandt, senior staff manager, quality systems, at Alcoa Inc., has received ASTM International Award of Merit for exceptional and sustained leadership and technical contributions within Committee B07 on Light Metals and Alloys. A member of ASTM since 2004, Brandt currently serves as Committee B07 recording secretary. He is also secretary of Subcommittee B07.01 on Aluminum Alloy Ingots and Castings and chairs U.S. TAG National Committee for ISO/TC 79 on Light Metals and Alloys. Read More

AMT Board of Directors announced that imX – interactive manufacturing eXperience has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts and inability of key partners to commit staff and product. This event, focused on education and product applications, was to take place in Las Vegas from November 18–20. "Rest assured," said AMT Chairman R.
