Student Winners Announced in NREL's alternative energy car races.

May 25, 2012

NREL's Junior Solar Sprint, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Lithium Ion Battery car competitions saw 104 participating teams from 23 Colorado schools. Student teams raced solar, lithium ion, or hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles they designed and built themselves, and trophies were given out for speed as well as technology, craftsmanship, and innovation for each technology. Waterproofing Standard focuses on drainage systems media.

ASTM D7492/D7492M, Guide for Use of Drainage System Media with Waterproofing Systems, provides information and guidelines for selection and installation of drainage systems media used with waterproofing systems. As chairmen of Subcommittee D08.22 on Waterproofing and Dampproofing Systems, Bruce Darling noted that designers and contractors will be primary users of this new standard. IPC/JEDEC-9704A Guideline facilitates strain gage testing.

IPC/JEDEC-9704A, Printed Circuit Assembly Strain Gage Test Guideline, makes it easier for engineers to run strain gage tests during manufacturing process. While first-generation document provided target pass/fail points, Revision A changes focus to methodology. Guideline includes formulas for calculating strain and describes techniques for analyzing data derived from these tests. In addition to BGAs, IPC/JEDEC-9704A provides recommendations for sockets and ceramic capacitors. Read More

ISPE and ILF engage with U.S. and Asian regulators at meetings.

ISPE continued its mission to provide neutral ground for pharmaceutical industry professionals and regulators to discuss industry issues at ISPE Affiliate meetings in Japan and China. Key topics of Japan Affiliate meeting included international harmonization and effects of globalization, particularly in regards to counterfeiting and drug shortages. China meeting focused on introduction and implementation of China's new GMP guidelines and featured open and frank panel discussions with SFDA. Read More

NAM Comments on Administration's Fracking Regulations .

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement on proposed Bureau of Land Management hydraulic fracturing regulations on federal lands. According to Timmons, states are already effectively regulating hydraulic fracturing. New federal rules will be confusing and duplicative and will add unnecessary regulatory burden for energy producers. Shale development has a tremendous upside for manufacturers, and NAM urges Department of Interior to carefully reconsider these proposed regulations. Read More

NAM hails court's rejection of ambush elections.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after U.S. District Court invalidated National Labor Relations Board's "ambush elections" rule, which would have expedited unionization election process. According to Timmons, overturning the ambush elections rule is a key victory for job creators and the 12 million men and women working in manufacturing. ASTM Wood Committee approves fire resistance test standard.

May 25, 2012

ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood has approved ASTM D7746, Practice for Calculating the Superimposed Load on Wood-Frame Floor-Ceiling Assemblies for Standard Fire Resistance Tests. Developed by Subcommittee D07.05 on Wood Assemblies, standard will be used in conjunction with other fire test standards, and will be used primarily by manufacturers who are seeking fire resistance tests and agencies that conduct such tests. RIA announces first Certified Robot Integrators.

JR Automation, Motion Controls Robotics, Tennessee Rand, and Wolf Robotics are the first 4 robotic integrators to receive Certified Robot Integrator designation from RIA. In order to become certified, integrators go through rigorous process which includes on-site audit, safety training, and hands-on testing of key personnel. Energy Tech Emissions Estimates are narrowed by NREL.

May 24, 2012

Meta-analysis of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, performed by NREL, weighed emissions estimates per kW-hr from raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, operation, and decommissioning to get optimal comparisons. It found that, from cradle to grave, coal-fired energy releases ~20X as much GHG into atmosphere per kW-hr as solar energy. According to NREL Senior Scientist Garvin Heath, methodology used for study provided better precision of study results. Read More

ASTM NDT Committee develops beam divergence measurement standard.

Recently approved standard ASTM E2861, Test Method for Measurement of Beam Divergence and Alignment in Neutron Radiologic Beams, will be used by neutron imaging facilities, particularly those setting up neutron tomography imaging systems. According to one of subcommittee's members responsible for this standard's development, what ASTM E2861 details "will allow facilities to make corrections to their imaging systems if they are not properly aligned." U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and Department of Commerce Secretary John E. Bryson announced efforts to launch environmental technology initiative to help create American jobs in environmental industry. Environmental Technologies Export Initiative builds on President Obama's National Export Initiative, which aims to double U.S. exports by end of 2014 and support millions of American jobs. NREL simulates shade conditions in test for solar arrays.

NREL's "Photovoltaic Shading Testbed for Module-level Power Electronics" report details repeatable test procedure for simulating shaded operation of PV system and analysis model for converting these measurements into annual performance forecasts. According to test protocol, under heavy shading conditions, use of microinverters instead of typical string inverters can help mitigate impacts of shade by improving system performance by more than 12%. ELFA's MLFI-25 for April 2012 shows overall new business growth.

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for April shows overall new business volume of $6.1 billion, which is up 20% from same period in 2011 and down 10% from previous month. Year-to-date cumulative new business volume is up 17%, while receivables over 30 days, charge-offs, and credit approvals respectively decreased to 2.7%, 0.6%, and 76%. Also, total headcount for equipment finance companies in April increased 0.7% from the previous month (down 4.1% year over year). Read More

EPA promotes safer alternatives to nonylphenol ethoxylates.

EPA has released final report on alternatives to nonylphenol ethoxylates through Design for the Environment Alternatives Assessment Program. When released into environment, NPE can be persistent and highly toxic to aquatic organisms. In addition to information on availability of 8 safer alternatives to NPE that meet EPA's criteria for safer surfactants, report addresses DfE's hazard evaluation method for surfactants and progress being made in adopting safer surfactants. HI Expands Membership to all who sell to North American market.

Hydraulic Institute (HI) members have voted to approved bylaw change that broadens membership eligibility to include pump and supplier companies that manufacture wholly outside of North America but sell into North American market. According to Executive Director Robert Asdal, "active involvement of global companies will strengthen and add vitality to HI and the volunteer committees that drive the standards, guidelines, education programs, and other initiatives."
