Paper in Optics Express describes hope for patients with AMD.

As reported via their paper "Switchable telescopic contact lens" in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, team of DARPA-funded researchers from USA and Switzerland, led by University of California San Diego Professor Joseph Ford, have created slim, telescopic contact lens that can switch between normal and magnified vision. With refinements, this system could offer age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients way to enhance their vision. Read More

Nanotechnology Standard facilitates data exchange.

ASTM E2909, Guide for Investigation/Study/Assay Tab-Delimited Format for Nanotechnologies, will facilitate submission and exchange of nanomaterial descriptions and characterization data among individual researchers. It is hoped that ASTM E2909 will empower organizations to adopt standard methods for presenting data in nanotechnology publications, as well as provide researchers with guidelines for representing nanomaterials and characterizations to achieve cross-material comparison. MESA announces first date of B2MML program.

On September 9, MESA International is offering its first ever B2MML & Integration Fundamentals program. One-day course will cover fundamentals in plant-to-enterprise integration using B2MML and ISA-95 standards, and offer participants a MESA Certificate of Competency for successful completion. Class will help companies that are thinking about plant-to-enterprise integration projects identify the best path forward—showing them potential pitfalls in integration process and how to avoid them. NCDMM and AMT announce the start of the second part of the MTConnect Challenge: Creating Manufacturing Intelligence, a U.S. Department of Defense – Defense-Wide Manufacturing Science and Technology ManTech-sponsored 2-part competition. Starting on July 1 and closing Jan. 31, 2014, MTConnect Challenge 2 is seeking development of software applications that harness innovation and manufacturing intelligence breakthroughs utilizing data acquired via MTConnect standard. July Meeting Agenda has been released by NESCC.

Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC), joint initiative of ANSI and NIST, released agenda for spring meeting (July 23, 2013 in Washington, DC). Meeting will include presentations on nuclear energy standards from ISO Technical Committee (TC) 85 on nuclear energy and the lessons learned during construction of Vogtle Electric Generation plant near Waynesboro, GA as well as discussion of NESCC framework document and results of survey of NESCC members.
