Mass Settlement halts welding fume lawsuits.

According to Welding and Gases Today Online, steering committees for parties in Welding Fume MDL have reached global settlement resolving nearly all welding fume cases pending in state or federal courts. In exchange for dismissing their lawsuits and releasing all manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of welding fume products from liability, participating plaintiffs will be eligible to receive payments from settlement pool being funded by welding rod manufacturers. EPRI Releases EV fast charger demonstration results.

In February 2012 at its Knoxville, TN laboratory, EPRI demonstrated first prototype 2.4 kV, 45 kVA-based, solid-state, direct-current (DC) fast charging technology for electric vehicles. Using Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiEV, EPRI demonstrated charging and communication capabilities of Utility Direct Fast Charger technology with EV battery management systems. UI and web-based mobile data collection system were also included in demonstration. Read More

Comments Sought on proposed forensic analysis standard.

Standards Australia (SA), Australian member body to ISO, submitted proposal for International Standard on minimizing risk of contamination in products used to collect and analyze biological material for forensic DNA purposes. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites interested stakeholders to submit comments on said proposal by July 27, 2012. Proposed work item would set particular criteria around which consumables used in forensic DNA collection and analysis should be manufactured. Read More

NAM Chief Economist comments on May Jobs Report.

In his post, A Disappointing May Jobs Report, Chad Moutray notes economy added 69,000 net new jobs in May, with manufacturing up 12,000, as reported by The Bureau of Labor Statistics. Moutray calls this labor report "consistent with recent weaknesses...seen in the global and domestic marketplace" and points out anxieties felt regarding Europe and long-term tax policies. Moutray also mentions rises in unemployment to 8.2% and "so-called real unemployment rate" to 14.8%. Read More

Theodore Engle Honored for work on copper/copper alloy standards.

ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys presented Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow to Theodore J. Engle, product development manager at Revere Copper Products of Rome, NY. ASTM member since 1997, Engle is second vice chairman of Committee B05 and serves on multiple subcommittees. He is also chairman of Subcommittee B05.02 on Rod, Bar, Wire, Shapes, and Forgings and secretary of B05.94 on Strategic Planning. Engle also works on Committees E06/E12/E35. Read More

NAM Warns of Negative Impacts from EPA's proposed NAAQS.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons called scope and impact of proposed new National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) released by EPA "troubling." Citing current 8.2% unemployment, Timmons said manufacturers "can't afford this new standard," especially given its strict nature and the stalling economy. Lance R. Lewand, director of Insulating Materials Laboratory at Doble Engineering Co., Watertown, MA, has received Award of Merit and title of fellow from ASTM International Committee D27 on Electrical Insulating Liquids and Gases. A member of ASTM since 1989, Lewand works on several D27 subcommittees and is chairman of Subcommittee D27.06 on Chemical Test. He is a graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland, where he received a bachelor's degree in biology. Read More

Lawley has been a prolific contributor to literature of PM science and technology, publishing more than 300 papers. Approved ANSI/AMCA Standard defines fan efficiency grades.

AMCA International announced that Board of Standards Review of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved ANSI/AMCA Standard 205 on May 4, 2012. Said document, which defines fan efficiency grades (FEGs), includes within its scope fans with 5 in. or greater impeller diameter that operate with shaft power of 750 W (1 hp) and above and have total efficiency calculated according to ANSI/AMCA 210, ANSI/AMCA 230, AMCA 260, or ISO 5801. EPA Proposes Clean Air Standards for soot pollution.

Building on steps already taken to slash dangerous pollution in communities across USA, U.S. EPA proposed updates to its national air quality standards for harmful fine particle pollution, including soot. Proposal would strengthen annual health standard for harmful fine particle pollution (PM2.5) to level within range of 13-12 µg/m³; current annual standard is 15 µg/m³. Proposed changes are based on scientific evidence that includes thousands of studies. Read More
