Homebuilder to Pay Cival Penalty and implement stormwater controls.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced that Toll Brothers Inc. will pay $741,000 civil penalty to resolve alleged Clean Water Act violations at its construction sites, including those located in Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Also, Toll Brothers will invest in company-wide stormwater compliance program to improve employee training and increase management oversight at all current and future residential construction sites across USA. ASTM Committee supports radiation processing industry.

ASTM Subcommittee E10.01 on Radiation Processing: Dosimetry and Applications has been reorganized as ASTM Committee E61 on Radiation Processing. New main committee will revise and maintain existing Subcommittee E10.01 standards as well as develop new standards that cover entire irradiation process, from dosimetry selection to analysis of routine processing results. There were 220+ participants at PTDA's 11th annual Canadian Conference in Victoria, British Columbia. NEMA Welcomes federal transportation funding compromise.

NEMA welcomed bipartisan approval by House and Senate of legislation to consolidate and reauthorize federal highway and transit programs. Package includes support for developing and deploying technology solutions to increase efficiency of U.S. roadways and make them safer and less congested. NEMA worked to include beneficial provisions in this new law, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21), which sets funding levels and requirements through September 2014. Read More

NREL helps "supersize" butanol production.

Team of scientists from Cobalt Technologies assembled at NREL to supersize their process for making renewable butanol. Cobalt had proven in the lab that its anaerobic microorganism could take organic feedstocks and convert them into biobutanol. Cobalt's team was able to leverage NREL's Integrated Biorefinery Research Facility for their scale-up testing. According to figures published by Broadband Forum and prepared by broadband industry analysts Point Topic, global total of broadband subscribers soared to over 600 million in first quarter of 2012, indicating further acceleration in growth as over 100 million new lines were added in less than 18 months. Developed by Subcommittee B02.07 on Refined Nickel and Cobalt and Their Alloys, ASTM B983, Specification for Precipitation Hardened or Cold Worked, Seamless Nickel Alloy Pipe and Tube will be used to define strength and corrosion resistance of covered alloys. ASTM B983 outlines chemical composition ranges and heat treatment parameters that users will need to obtain minimum mechanical properties listed in standard. ASTM member since 1988, Touseull works on multiple D18 subcommittees and serves as member-at-large on executive subcommittee (D18.90) and as chairman of Subcommittee D18.91 on Standards Development and Review. North American EBCIs indicate conducive economic environment.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions dropped to 52.4 in June and has retreated 20+ points since reaching post-recession high in February. However, index continues to indicate economic environment conducive to industry growth as it has for each of last 9 months. EBCI for future North American conditions also lowered in June, falling nearly 14 points to 57.1. One-third of panelists expected conditions to improve over next 6 months. Read More

Cavanaugh Memorial Award for outstanding leadership and contributions in promoting and strengthening national and international voluntary standards system.
