PMA Business Conditions Report details future expectations.

June 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report shows metalforming companies expect business conditions to decline during next 3 months. Of 114 participating companies, 11% anticipate improvement, 57% predict stagnation, and 32% predict decline. Companies also forecast downward trend in incoming orders, with 15% for increase, 52% for no change, and 33% for decrease. Also, average daily shipping levels declined: 31% cited rise, 39% said levels were same, and 30% noted decrease. Read More

Study quantifies economic contribution of non-profit inventions.

BIO released report on significant economic impact of university and non-profit institution patent licensing on U.S. economy. Study documents sizeable return that U.S. taxpayers receive on their investment through Bayh-Dole Act, which enables patenting and commercialization of federally funded university and non-profit institution research. Between 1996 and 2010, impact on U.S. gross industry output is as much as $836 billion and impact on U.S. GDP is as much as $388 billion. Read More

SME Bestows Highest Honor to pioneer of general design theory.

SME's highest recognition, Honorary Membership, has been bestowed upon Hiroyuki Yoshikawa for his 50+ years of vision and commitment to manufacturing. Specifically, Yoshikawa was honored for his contributions in international academic, industrial, and government manufacturing engineering communities. Most notable was Yoshikawa's pioneering role in general design theory; many international experts in design engineering have since been using his theory to develop new applications. Read More

AAMA Speaker notes positive trends for fenestration industry.

At AAMA 2012 Summer Conference in Oak Brook, IL, Keynote Speaker Michael Collins said bankruptcies and business closures dropped from 2008-2010, but inched up in 2011. Collins considers it positive sign that many companies are being purchased out of bankruptcy. Rises in household income and increases in power and energy construction are also positive trends, however, future homeowners still have trouble getting mortgages and commercial construction is often delayed due to lack of financing. AEM Applauds Senate on clean Russia PNTR legislation.

AEM President Dennis Slater commended Senators Max Baucus, John Kerry, John Thune, and John McCain on their cooperation to advance efforts to approve Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status for Russia. Slater called it "vital that U.S. workers and manufacturers have the same opportunities as other countries to benefit from normal trade relations with the world's 11th largest economy." He continued, saying "Swift and bipartisan action" will benefit U.S. manufacturers. Read More

2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award honors Dr. Margaret Foti.

Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research, has been selected as Honoree for 2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award for leadership in cancer research and advocacy. Specifically, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood cited Foti's "tireless efforts to improve cancer research and build an enhanced network of cancer researchers through the American Association for Cancer Research." During Foti's tenure as AACR CEO, membership grew to 34,000+ members. Read More

BIO International Convention showed record partnering activity.

Drawing 16,505 industry leaders from 49 states and 65 countries, 2012 BIO International Convention hosted record 25,291 partnering meetings and highlighted speakers who addressed critical global challenges as well as top issues in biotechnology. BIO president and CEO Jim Greenwood noted that the majority of attendees had a positive outlook for the future of biotechnology. NASA's Langley Research Center and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) Space Systems in Louisville, CO joined forces to update Langley's HL-20 lifting body vehicle design into Dream ChaserĀ® orbital crew vehicle, which is being developed as part of NASA's Commercial Crew Development program. Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry reflects overall market confidence of 48.5 in June, down from the May index of 59.2. Decline reflects growing concern over European debt crisis, U.S. unemployment, and regulatory and political uncertainty. In survey, 8.1% of executives expect improvement in business conditions over next 4 months, down from 17.1% in May. ASTM Standard aims to resolve test result differences.

Proposed standard ASTM WK35585, Practice for Data Collection and Resolving Test Result Differences Between Buyer and Seller, will provide rational dispute resolution practice for contractors or material suppliers and agencies when test results from two different laboratories on same product differ. Some procedures described in standard include documentation to determine acceptable quality material, sample chain of custody, and determination of whether data comes from same population. Read More

ASTM Water Committee develops standard for Carbon-14 sampling.

Proposed standard ASTM WK36397, Practice for Sampling of C-14 in Gaseous Effluents, is being developed by Subcommittee D19.04 on Methods of Radiochemical Analysis. Standard will help nuclear power plants, as well as other facilities at which fission reactions or spent fuel processing takes place, measure radionuclide carbon-14 in gaseous effluents as required by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
