National Robot Safety Conference will be in Indianapolis.

Scheduled for Oct 14-16, 2013 at the Marriott East Hotel in Indianapolis, 25th National Robot Safety Conference focuses on the new American Robot Safety Standard, ANSI/RIA R15.06-2012, the first update to the standard since 1999. Key issues to be addressed include risk assessment, machine safety controls, practical industrial robot safety, robot user case studies, and primer on functional safety. PM Industry in North America points to continued growth in 2013.

According to comments made by Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) President Matthew Bulger at PowderMet2013, PM industry started 2013 with confidence after continued growth in 2012. Metal powder producers, equipment makers, and PM parts companies, notably fabricators of metal injection molded (MIM) parts, reported increases in sales for 2012. Industry has regained growth momentum, and 2013 is expected to repeat of last year's modest but positive gains. Pharma EXPO provides pharmaceutical manufacturing solutions.

In May, PMMI and ISPE announced the debut of Pharma EXPO, a new show providing total solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing. Now, PMMI and ISPE report strong support for show from leading pharmaceutical/medical device solution providers. Show's exhibitors will be suppliers of packaging, processing, and other supply chain technologies. Pharma EXPO will debut and co-locate with PACK EXPO International 2014, scheduled for November 2–5 at McCormick Place in Chicago. Shell Oil to spend over $115 million to reduce air pollution.

Shell Oil and affiliated partnerships have agreed to resolve alleged violation of the Clean Air Act at a large refinery and chemical plant in Deer Park, TX by spending at least $115 million to control harmful air pollution from industrial flares and other processes, and by paying $2.6 million civil penalty. Shell has also agreed to spend $1 million on a state-of-the-art system to monitor benzene levels at fence line of refinery and chemical plant, making data available to public through website. FAA Boosts Aviation Safety via new pilot qualification standards.

July 17, 2013

Final rule announced by FAA increases qualification requirements for first officers (co-pilots) who fly for U.S. passenger and cargo airlines. Co-pilots must hold Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, requiring 1,500 hr total time as pilot, as well as have aircraft type rating, which involves additional training and testing specific to airplanes they fly. In comment, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the traveling public deserves "the most qualified and best trained pilots." Read More

Smart Grid Interoperability Standard has been approved by ANSI.

NEMA received approval July 10 from ANSI for ANSI/NEMA SG-IC 1-2013 Smart Grid Interoperable and Conformant Testing and Certification Scheme Operator Guidelines. With development efforts led by NEMA, this standard describes roles and responsibilities for each of 4 main participants in testing scheme for interoperability and security among Smart Grid products. Guideline brings uniformity and portability to process and creates necessary levels of checks and balances.
