Halogen A-Line Lamp Index shows accelerated growth.

NEMA's shipment index for halogen A-line lamps shows acceleration in growth during Q1 2012, improving 110% on year over year (y/y) basis. This increase was preceded by gains of 90% and 98% during Q3 and Q4 2011, respectively. Conversely, respective Q1 2012 declines for incandescent lamps and CFLs were measured at 0.3% and 1% y/y. Halogen A-line lamps garnered 2.8% share, double same period from last year, while incandescent lamps and CFLs respectively registered shares of 76.3% and 20.9%. Read More

May Manufacturing Technology Orders are up 12.1%.

According to AMT, May U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $473.92 million. This total, reported by companies participating in USMTO program, was up 14.5% from April and 19.0% when compared to $398.10 million reported for May 2011. With year-to-date total of $2,235.37 million, 2012 is up 12.1% compared with 2011. "While the latest PMI saw a slight dip, overall indications are that manufacturing will continue to lead the way in the general economy," stated AMT President Douglas K. Woods. Read More

Rare Earth Minerals Standards Meeting to be held Aug 15, 2012.

ASTM International will host organizational meeting, on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm EST, for establishment of standards activity on rare earth minerals. At planning meeting held May 16, potential standards topics including REM characterization, efficiency of manufacture, and safety (chemical, physical, and shipping and handling) were outlined. NASA and U.S. Forest Service signed Space Act Agreement to raise awareness about importance of fire prevention and fire safety. Specifically, partnership will highlight areas of common interest in wildfires, forest and plant growth research, and materials science. U.S. announces Clean Air Act settlement with Wisconsin utility.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced Clean Air Act settlement with Dairyland Power Cooperative that will cover utility's 3 power plants in Alma and Genoa, WI. DPC has agreed to invest approximately $150 million in pollution control technology that will protect public health and resolve violations of CAA. Settlement will also require that DPC spend $5 million on environmental mitigation projects and pay civil penalty of $950,000. Read More

Standard to specify process for manufacturing viral kill step.

Proposed standard, ASTM WK36552, Practice for Inactivation of Retrovirus by pH, is being developed by Subcommittee E55.04 on General Biopharmaceutical Standards, part of ASTM International Committee E55 on Manufacture of Pharmaceutical Products. Standard will provide important process step to be used in manufacture of protein-based drugs, such as antibodies and fusion proteins, made to inactive retroviruses. Read More

US, EU CEOs unite behind ICAO global environmental framework.

Industry leaders from Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) and AIA exchanged views on various topics, ranging from CO2 certification and biofuels to EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). While acknowledging industry challenges "both home and abroad," Chairman of the Board of Governors of AIA David Hess called this meeting "productive and necessary. North Carolina Leaders call for action on budget sequestration.

Leaders of North Carolina's aerospace and defense community wrote to North Carolina's congressional delegation, urging quick action on legislation to repeal $500 billion in program cuts, which could cost N.C. 11,000 jobs. Governor Bev Perdue stated that sequestration cuts are a threat to the nation and the state. According to AIA president and CEO Marion Blakey, budget decisions need to be based on strategy and priorities, not one-size-ruins-all approach of sequestration. Read More

Air Traffic Control Tower Project to create hundreds of jobs.

July 10, 2012

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta joined federal and local officials in breaking ground for NextGen-equipped ATC tower at San Francisco International Airport. Project is expected to create 600 total jobs, of which 400 will be in construction. Located between Terminals 1 and 2, tower will be 221 ft tall with 650 ft² controller work area. Three-story, 44,000 ft² base building will house offices, computer equipment, backup generator, and corridors. Read More

Paul Shipp Receives Award of Merit for work on fire standards.

Paul H. Shipp, Ph.D., principal research associate at USG Corp. in Libertyville, IL, received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow for contributions to Committee E05 on Fire Standards. ASTM member since 1987, Shipp is past chairman of Committee E05 and leads Subcommittee E05.37 on Honors, Awards, and Nominations. USGBC's Consensus Effort questioned by ASC at GSA review.

Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) questioned U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) commitment to consensus-based approach in development of LEED rating system. Consequently, ASC urged U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to not recommend the system as green certification standard for Federal Government at Agency listening session. BIO commends Senate for approval of user fee package.

BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood released statement on passage of S. 3187, Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act. According to Greenwood, BIO is pleased that Congress moved quickly to consider, pass, and send legislation to the President well in advance of PDUFA IV expiration.
