EPA and Department of VA to connect veterans, water sector jobs.

Under memorandum of understanding (MOU), EPA and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program will connect veterans with disabilities to career opportunities in water and wastewater sectors. EPA and VA will work with water utilities, states, and local VA counselors to promote water sector careers and resources for finding water jobs for veterans as well as educational programs to help veterans transition into careers in water industries. SAE announces dates for 2013 World Congress and beyond.

Scheduled for April 16-18, SAE 2013 World Congress will be hosted by Chrysler with ZF as Tier One Strategic Supplier. Mircea Gradu, Vice President Powertrain Transmission and Driveline Engineering, Head of Virtual Analysis at Chrysler Group LLC, will serve as Chair for the event. AEM commends Congress, President on Ex-Im Bank Reauthorization.

AEM congratulates Members of Congress and President Obama for passing Export-Import Bank Reauthorization of 2012 and signing it into law. Ex-Im Bank, which supports hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs by providing export credit and insurance to more than 3,000 mainly smaller American companies, plays vital role in helping American workers and businesses compete overseas. IREC issues statement on net metering ruling.

According to IREC, unanimous vote by California Public Utilities Commission clarifying methodology for calculating State's 5% net metering cap will dramatically expand opportunities for California ratepayers to go solar. Vote brings to an end a discussion initiated by IREC in November 2009 concerning how to calculate cap. Under methodology adopted by Commission, more than 2,000 additional megawatts of solar can be installed under state's net metering program. Read More

Standard offers test method for stormwater treatment products.

ASTM WK36628, Test Method for Measuring Effectiveness of Filtration Products for Stormwater Treatment, is being developed by Subcommittee C27.70 on Precast Concrete Products for Stormwater Management, part of ASTM International Committee C27 on Precast Concrete Products. Standard will specifically consider how to determine hydraulic characteristics of filtration system by experimentally determining hydraulic conductivity of filter within the unit. Read More

Under ANSI approval, Hydraulic Institute is seeking qualified individuals to participate in review process of newly completed standard for Rotodynamic Vertical Pumps. Standard provides design/application information, including principle features of pump type and necessary precautions for proper use. Document includes information applicable to vertical diffuser and submersible motor deep well and short-set pumps that are driven by vertical electric motors or horizontal engines with right angle gears. Stencil Design Guidelines have been updated with new materials.

To help designers and board assemblers address challenges of working with new materials and smaller, finer-pitch components, IPC-7525B provides guidelines for design and fabrication of stencils for solder paste and SMT adhesive with discussion on through-hole and mixed technology. This updated standard includes differences for tin-lead and lead-free solder paste, overprint, 2-print, and step stencil designs. Example order form and inspection checklist are also included. Standard to Assist Disabled during disaster or emergency.

Proposed new standard, ASTM WK37628, Guide for Preparing for the Impact of Disasters/Emergencies on Local Residents/Visitors That Have Disabilities, will provide planning guidance for helping those with disabilities in disaster or emergency situation. According to E54.02 vice chairman Russell Salter, contents of this standard will help first responders and communities become more aware of concerns and issues of people with disabilities in planning for and surviving a disaster. NEMA responded to House of Representatives' passage of H.R. 5855, fiscal year 2013 Homeland Security Appropriations bill. EPA recognizes environmental innovation at science competition.

Thabit Pulak, a sophomore at Richardson High School in Richardson, TX, was named recipient of EPA's Patrick H. Hurd Sustainability award for demonstrating commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship. Pulak's project, a Home-Based Arsenic Bio-Sand Water Filter, uses nano particles made with kitchen materials easily found in Southeast Asia to enhance bio-sand water filter, so that it removes arsenic from water. Pulak will participate in National Sustainable Design Expo in 2013. Read More

John R. Hubbling, manager of Laboratory Services at Metropolitan Council Environmental Services in St. Paul, MN, has received ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee D19 on Water. A member of ASTM International and Committee D19 since 1975, Hubbling serves as chairman of Subcommittee D19.02 on Quality Systems, Specifications and Statistics. Committee recognized his contributions with the Max Hecht Award in 2003 and D19 Certificate of Appreciation in 2007. Read More

NREL Director Arvizu named as National Science Board Chair.

Dan Arvizu, director of U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has been elected for 2-year term as Chairman of the National Science Board. This 25-member body advises the president and Congress on science and engineering issues and acts as official policy setting and budget approving body for National Science Foundation. Arvizu has served as director of NREL since 2005 and was nominated to seat on board last year and confirmed by U.S. Senate. Read More
