Capstan Atlantic wins grand prize for power take-off clutch hub.

During 2012 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition, Capstan Atlantic of Wrentham, MA, won grand prize in industrial motors/controls and hydraulics category for PM steel alloy power take-off clutch hub. Formed to density of 7.05 g/cm³, complex multi-level part replaced a machined design. Typical properties include ultimate tensile strength of 80,000 psi, yield strength 90,000 psi, and 92 HRB apparent hardness. Read More

During 2012 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition, Capstan Atlantic of Wrentham, MA, won appliance category award of distinction for 7-level rack used in an industrial washing machine. Made to density of 6.8 g/cm³, part has sectional density that is kept equal within 0.08 g/cm³. Part has minimum yield strength of 43,000 psi and typical 55,000 psi tensile strength. PM replaced a die-cast part that needed extensive machining. Read More

ASTM presents Award of Merit to Mark Granger.

Mark S. Granger, senior partner at Morrison Mahoney LLP in Boston, MA, has received Award of Merit and title of fellow from Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities. Granger, who joined ASTM in 1994, has served as chairman of Subcommittee F08.15 on Ice Hockey since 2005. He has been a large contributor to standards for helmets and eye and face protective equipment for hockey players, and has organized mock trials highlighting issues related to use of ASTM standards in litigation. BIO praises Rep. Fitzpatrick on Fostering Innovation Act.

July 2012 MCI-EFI shows improving industry confidence.

July 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) shows overall market confidence at 51.5, up from June's 48.5. When asked to assess business conditions over next 4 months, 6.5% of executives expected improvement, 71% saw no change, and 22.6% predicted decline. Positive responses were up for questions concerning same time period for demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures, access to capital to fund equipment acquisitions, and employee hiring. ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality presented Moyer D. Thomas Award to Kevin Ashley, Ph.D., for his contributions to standardization of sampling and analysis of atmospheres. ASTM International member since 1991, Ashley works on multiple D22 subcommittees and is chairman of D22.04 on Workplace Air Quality. US EPA Announces Clean Water Act agreement with Chattanooga, TN.

July 24, 2012

U.S. EPA, Department of Justice, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, and Office of the Tennessee Attorney General announced settlement with city of Chattanooga, TN. Civil penalty of $476,400 will be paid by Chattanooga, which will also make improvements to its sewer systems, estimated at $250 million, to eliminate unauthorized overflows of untreated raw sewage. Chattanooga also agreed to implement green infrastructure plan and perform $800,000 stream restoration project. Read More

Hydraulic Institute (HI) updated 1997 edition of ANSI/HI standard on allowable operating region for centrifugal and vertical pumps and published ANSI/HI 9.6.3 - 2012 Rotodynamic (Centrifugal and Vertical) Pumps - Guideline for Allowable Operating Region. Updated guideline discusses effects of operation at flow rates greater or less than flow rate at best efficiency point.
