ACIL announces Smart Grid testing and certification workshop.

On Sept 11-12, 2012, American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL) will hold Smart Grid testing and certification workshop, which will examine the most recent information on Smart Grid interoperability, as well as related technology developments. Keith Greenaway and Roger Muse of ACLASS, a brand of ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board, will address workshop, along with 12 other speakers including representatives of ACIL and other relevant groups. Industry Group to study portable electronics usage.

Given widespread consumer use of portable electronic devices, FAA is forming government-industry group to study current PED policies and procedures aircraft operators use to determine when these devices can be used safely during flight. Group will examine testing methods aircraft operators use to determine which new technologies passengers can use aboard aircraft as well as establishment of technological standards associated with use of PEDs during any phase of flight. Aluminum Can is most recycled beverage container.

According to Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute, and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, U.S. recycling rate for aluminum beverage containers jumped 7 percentage points, from 58.1% to 65.1% for 2011. That means 61 billion cans were recycled in 2011, a milestone that marks solid progress toward industry's goal of 75% recycle rate. Amount of energy saved just from recycling cans in 2011 is equal to energy equivalent of over 17 million barrels of crude oil. Read More

NREL's Microgrid Efforts will benefit from ESIF completion.

U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is working with industry on microgrids to help maintain secure, reliable flow of energy. To bolster such efforts, Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) will be completed later this year and expand testing scale to 1 MW. NREL Electrical Engineer Greg Martin said ESIF will bolster research power in both actual electrical power and ability to collect data across all points in system. Read More

ASTM Committee is developing standard for hot rolled rod coil.

Being developed by Subcommittee B02.07 on Refined Nickel and Cobalt and Their Alloys, proposed standard ASTM WK37796, Specification for General Requirements for Hot Rolled Rod Coil, will aid in covering level of defects that exist in hot rolled rod coil. One purpose of ASTM WK37796, according to B02.07 member Larry Paul, is to define what "defect" means in practical terms. Producing mills, wire re-drawers, and re-rolling mills will be primary users of this standard once approved. Read More

Standard covers dirt pick-up resistance of architectural paints.

Proposed standard, ASTM WK38233, Test Method for Dirt Pick-Up Resistance for the Films of Architectural Paints and Stains, is being developed by Subcommittee D01.42 on Architectural Coatings. According to Amanda Andrews, chemist, Wacker Chemical Corp., and D01.42 member, proposed standard will focus on standardizing dirt composition; how to apply dirt; removal of dirt; and rating technique for exterior coated substrate compared to many years of outdoor exposure. IPC Advocacy helps shape SEC conflict minerals regulation.

Conflict minerals rule approved by U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) includes all key provisions for which IPC and its members have been lobbying. Specifically, regulation includes 2 year phase-in period during which conflict minerals may be identified as "conflict undeterminable" and permits companies to designate recycled or scrap minerals as "DRC conflict free" after conducting reasonable inquiry. NIST Seeks Comments on guidelines for securing BIOS for servers.

NIST requests comments on draft of BIOS Protection Guidelines for Servers, which provides procedures for securing BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) systems for server computers. Publication specifically addresses BIOS security in varied architectures specific to servers, as opposed to BIOS Protection Guidelines (NIST SP 800-147) that NIST published in 2011 which provided instructions for protecting BIOS in desktops and laptops.
