Construction Materials Prices remain flat in July 2013.

According to Producer Price Index, construction materials prices were unchanged in July but up 2% year over year. Nonresidential construction materials prices were down 0.1% for month and 1.8% higher than one year ago. In comment, ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu noted how price declines in certain categories "help explain the flat overall PPI number for the month, but do not change the fact that materials prices remain more volatile than they might appear at first glance." NEMA establishes two programs to improve electrical grid.

In decade since the 2003 blackout that crippled much of northeastern U.S. and Canada, NEMA has established two programs focused on improving the electrical grid. Emerging Technology Panel meets twice per year to discuss major challenges faced by utility and commercial customers to identify future directions that will be beneficial to the industry and consumers. In coordination with ETP, NEMA’s Strategic Initiatives program tackles technical and policy hurdles necessary to implement ETP’s vision. Read More

Manufacturing Technology Orders down in June.

According to AMT, June U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $426.83 million. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was down 5.8% from May and down 5.7% when compared with total of $452.75 million reported for June 2012. With year-to-date total of $2,538.55 million, 2013 is down 5.7% compared with 2012. Read More

NREL Scientists find asymmetry in topological insulators.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory scientists contributed first-principles calculations and co-authored "Mapping the Orbital Wavefunction of the Surface States in 3-D Topological Insulators" paper. Research shows class of materials being looked at for next gen computers behaves asymmetrically at sub-atomic level. This promotes understanding of topological insulators that may have potential to be building blocks of quantum computers that could run on almost no electricity. Read More

Silke Pflueger to Address Direct Diodes at LME 2013 event.

In her keynote presentation at LIA's third annual Lasers for Manufacturing Event® (LME®), laser industry expert Silke Pflueger will address impact of and applications for ultra-high brightness direct diodes. Pflueger has expressed confidence that these devices will rapidly become industry workhorses. Her address will be one of four 30 min keynotes in Laser Technology Showcase Theater, located in exhibit area of LME 2013. Event takes place September 11–12 in Illinois. Read More

TRFA Announces Winners of thermoset polymer research award.

TRFA announced Qi An as winner of 4th Annual Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award for "Epoxy-Based Carbon Nanotube/Fiber Hybrid Composites: Nanoscale Hybridization via Electrophoresis." This paper will be presented at TRFA 2013 Annual Meeting, which will take place September 29 through October 1 in Newport, RI. Second place prize was given to Zhan H. Yang for "Enhancing Mechanical Performance by Heterogeneity-Promoting Staged Fabrications," which will also be presented. Read More
