Fieldbus Foundation releases updated segment design tool.

Fieldbus Foundation announced updates to its DesignMATE(TM) software tool, a software download that allows plant automation professionals to audit segment layouts. Updates cover DesignMATE's library of registered devices, and revised terminology used within software to align with current FOUNDATION(TM) fieldbus installations. DesignMATE automatically audits segment layouts for conformance with FOUNDATION physical layer specification, which is based on international IEC 61158-2 (Type 1) standard. Read More

Manufacturing Innovation Consortium announced by White House.

August 23, 2012

White House, on August 15, 2012, announced launch of public-private institute for manufacturing innovation in Youngstown, OH. This new partnership, National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII), includes manufacturing firms, universities, community colleges, and nonprofit organizations from Ohio-Pennsylvania-West Virginia Tech Belt. Consortium will receive initial $30 million in federal funding that will be matched by $40 million from consortium itself. Read More

OFAC issues guidance on international standards development.

Office of Foreign Assets Control issued guidance regarding applicability of U.S. sanctions regulations to international standards development activities through ISO and IEC. According to OFAC, standards development activities either fall within "informational materials" exemption to sanctions regulations, or are authorized under general license which allows for collaboration on creation and enhancement of written publications, such as international standards. Equipment Finance Industry Confidence stays neutral in August.

According to August 2012 Monthly Confidence Index, confidence in equipment finance market is 50.2, down from July index of 51.5, reflecting ongoing industry concerns over economic, regulatory, and political uncertainty. When asked to assess their business conditions over next 4 months, 6.3% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, while 78.1% of respondents believe business conditions will remain the same, and 15.6% believe business conditions will worsen. David Styers Jr. receives Copper Club Award.

David Styers Jr., VP of technical product and processes at Wolverine Tube Inc. in Decatur, AL, has received Copper Club Award from ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys. Established in 1979, award is presented to individuals who have done the most to advance standardization of copper and copper alloys. Styers has been a member of Committee B05 since 1992. He currently serves as first vice chairman of main committee and chairs Subcommittee B05.94 on Strategic Planning. Read More

Sinclair Oil Penalty will resolve 2008 consent decree violations.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced settlement with 2 subsidiaries of Sinclair Oil Corporation to resolve alleged violations of air pollution limits established in 2008 consent decree at Casper and Sinclair, WY refineries. Stipulated penalties to be paid total $3,844,000, and required spending for additional pollution control equipment and other projects will total ~$10.5 million. Settlement also requires reductions of NOx, SO2, and particulate matter emissions. Read More

Organizing committee for SPE Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition announced winners of group's annual SPE ACCE Graduate Scholarship Award for 2012-2013 academic year. Winning students whose composites-intensive projects were judged to have greatest potential impact on ground transportation were John Hofmann, who is working on a doctorate in Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Virginia Tech and Alper Kiziltas who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Forest Resources at University of Maine. PMA releases Business Conditions Report for August 2012.

According to August 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies expect slight improvement in business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 23% of participants anticipate economic activity will improve, while 29% anticipate increase in orders compared to 26% in July. Average daily shipping levels continued to decline in August. Only 17% of participants report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, while 40% report decrease in shipping levels. Construction Materials Prices decline for third straight month.

August 20, 2012

According to August 14 Producer Price Index report released by U.S. Department of Labor, construction materials prices declined 0.7% in July 2012. Prices are down 0.6% on yearly basis, marking first year-over-year decline since November 2009. Nonresidential construction materials prices also are down, falling 0.9% for month and 1.2% for year. Meanwhile, crude energy materials prices increased 0.6% - first monthly increase since February 2012 - but fell 19.1% year over year. Read More
