NEMA CEO appointed to serve on Federal Advisory Committee.

NEMA President and CEO Evan Gaddis was appointed to serve on Federal Advisory Committee on Supply Chain Competitiveness, which will advise Secretary of Commerce on development and administration of programs and policies to expand U.S. exports of goods, services, and technology in accordance with applicable U.S. regulations. BIO Urges EPA and Congress to stay on course with RFS.

BIO president and CEO Jim Greenwood has made his statement regarding letter sent by 156 Members of the House of Representatives to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, where they urged EPA to reduce federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). After saying "RFS is working" and "setting a clear path for U.S. energy security, reduced reliance on foreign oil, and a cleaner, healthier environment," Greenwood urged caution about "rushing to make long-term changes to this policy." BIO Thanks Senators for extending tax policy.

BIO thanked Senators Max Baucus (D-MT) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) as well as Senate Finance Committee for including Cellulosic Biofuels Producer Tax Credit (PTC), Accelerated Depreciation Allowance for Cellulosic Biofuel Plant Property, algae biofuels addition in tax extenders package, and extending R/D tax credit for 2 years. Proposed Standard looks at road paving materials.

Proposed standard ASTM WK38070, Practice for Sample Preparation and Conditioning with Additives, is being developed by ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials. According to D04.20 subcommittee chairman Richard Steger, proposed practice would ensure mixtures produced in lab will match performance of materials placed in field. Also, performance of mixtures using such additives will be predictable during bituminous mixture design and liquid asphalt binder formulation stage. Read More

Proposed Standard addresses factory fabricated geomembranes.

August 6, 2012

Used as hydraulic and gas barriers, geomembranes are intended for pond and canal liners, landfill liners, caps, and floating covers. ASTM WK38128, Guide for Identification, Packaging, Handling, Storage and Deployment of Fabricated Geomembrane Panels, will provide guidance for installation and use of factory fabricated geomembrane panels at job sites. Proposed ASTM Standard addresses transmitted impact force on clothing.

ASTM WK38096, Test Method for Measuring Transmitted Impact Force Through Materials Used in Protective Clothing, is proposed standard being developed by Subcommittee F23.20. It will measure amount of energy absorbed by protective item compared to no protection at all. Also, standard will verify quality and performance of protective clothing in regard to transmitted force. Federal Mandatory Safety Standard addresses play yards.

August 3, 2012

U.S. CPSC has approved federal mandatory safety standard for play yards that incorporates provisions of ASTM International standard F406, Consumer Safety Specification for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs/Play Yards. Some requirements for play yards, as outlined in F406, include: stability test to prevent the play yard from tipping over; latch and lock mechanisms to keep play yard from folding on child; entrapment tests for attachments; floor strength tests; and minimum side height requirements. ASTM Standard helps determine endovascular device shelf life.

ASTM F2914, Guide for Identification of Shelf-Life Test Attributes for Endovascular Devices, was developed by Subcommittee F04.30 on Cardiovascular Standards, part of ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. Standard will enable companies to use engineering testing or fundamental engineering principles to justify whether certain attributes are unaffected by age and whether they need to be tested after aging. ASABE revises protective agents terminology/definition standard.

ASAE S327.4, Terminology and Definitions for Application of Crop or Forestry Production and Protection Agents, was previously titled Terminology and Definitions for Application of Crop, Animal, or Forestry Production and Protection Agents. Governing committee determined standard is no longer used for animal production, and title and scope were revised accordingly. Other changes include format pagination updates and clarifications to spray drift and air assist sprayer definitions. Read More

ANSI/IKECA C10-2011, Standard for Cleaning of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems, provides guidance on how to determine frequency and necessity for cleaning through inspection procedures, methods for cleaning exhaust systems, and standards for post-cleaning exhaust conditions. ANSI has released workshop report on status of redevelopment of National Standards Search Engine (NSSN). Report details purpose, scope, recommendations, and next steps identified during ANSI Database Design Verification Workshop on March 21, 2012, including addition of keyword search option to NSSN.
