Gene Haas Foundation donates $1 million to SME Foundation.

Gene Haas Foundation continued its commitment to education and training by making a gift of $1 million for scholarships in manufacturing and machining training and education to benefit as many as 1,000 students in North America, Europe, and South Africa. In a ceremony next to the Haas Technical Education Center, Gene Haas Foundation Board Chair Bob Murray presented check to Kathy Burnham of the SME Education Foundation, which will administer the scholarship fund. Hydraulic Institute opens registration for 2013 Fall Meeting.

Scheduled for Oct 23–25, HI 2013 Fall Meeting will focus on pump systems optimization, pump efficiency rule-making on commercial and industrial pumps, pump test lab certification and pump labeling, and standards development. Over 30 HI Technical Committees will meet to review and advance specific areas of knowledge and work that ultimately will result in development of new or updated ANSI/HI Pump Standards. U.S. Construction Machinery Exports down 21% at midyear.

August 21, 2013

According to AEM, U.S. construction machinery exports dropped 21% during first half of 2013, with $10.8 billion shipped to global markets compared to $13.7 billion at midyear 2012. Exports to Europe declined 20% for total of $1.4 billion, and dropped 15% to Canada for total of $3.7 billion. Exports to Asia decreased 24% to $1.2 billion. While exports to Central America gained 15% to $1.2 billion, exports to South America dropped 13% to $1.9 billion. Read More

NEMA publishes guide for carbon monoxide alarms.

NEMA has published NEMA SB 7-2013 Applications Guide for Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Detectors. This standard has been updated to reflect changes in 2012 edition of NFPA 720 Standard for the Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detection and Warning Equipment. SB 7 is relevant to those involved in the life safety industry as it provides information on the application of CO alarms and detectors. Read More

EPA revises fuel economy label estimates for 2013 Ford C-Max.

As part of U.S. EPA's commitment to ensuring consumers are given accurate fuel economy values, agency is revising estimates for the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid. EPA tested the C-Max after receiving consumer complaints that the vehicle did not achieve label values of 47 mpg for highway, city, and combined driving. New fuel economy estimates for Ford 2013 C-Max are 43 mpg combined, 45 mpg city, and 40 mpg highway. Ford is voluntarily re-labeling the vehicles with these new values. Read More

Pesticide Labels will protect bees and other pollinators.

August 20, 2013

In effort to protect bees and other pollinators, EPA has developed pesticide labels that prohibit use of some neonicotinoid pesticide products where bees are present. New labels will have bee advisory box and icon with information on routes of exposure and spray drift precautions. Announcement affects products containing the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, dinotefuran, clothianidin, and thiamethoxam. EPA will work with pesticide manufacturers to change labels so that they meet FIFRA standard. Read More

Solvent Rub Standard has been approved by ASTM committee.

ASTM D7835, Test Method for Determining the Solvent Resistance of an Organic Coating Using a Mechanical Rubbing Machine, was developed by Subcommittee D01.53 on Coil Coated Metal. It describes solvent rub technique that can be used in laboratory, field, or fabrication shop for assessing solvent resistance of organic coating that chemically/physically changes during curing process. D01 member Ted Best said use of this standard would not be limited to coil coating industry. Read More
