ASTM approves effectiveness test for wet extraction systems.

ASTM F2828, Test Method for Assessing Carpet Cleaning Effectiveness in Terms of Visual Appearance Change When Cleaned with a Wet Extraction Cleaning System, was developed by Subcommittee F11.35 on Extractor Cleaners, part of ASTM International Committee F11 on Vacuum Cleaners. With consumer in mind, standard provides meaningful prediction of in-home cleaning performance, and will also aid manufacturers in development of better-performing cleaning products over time. ANSI seeks comments on International Workshop Agreement.

Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology has submitted proposal for new International Workshop Agreement regarding ISO 9001:2008, Quality management systems - Requirements. ISO 9001:2008 sets down rules for organizational quality management systems that are intended to be applicable to variety of groups and companies. ESMA has offered to serve as secretariat for proposed IWA, which would work to set new guidelines for use of ISO 9001:2008 by policing organizations worldwide. Read More

ANSI Welcomed 15 New Members during July 2012.

In July 2012, ANSI welcomed 15 new members. These organizations join one federation that represents 125,000+ companies and over 3.5 million professionals. ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia stated that these new members will gain access to information and BI not available anywhere else as well as build relationships that empower them with voice and influence over standardization and conformity assessment decisions that directly affect their business. EPA and Green Sports Alliance address environmental challenges.

EPA signed Memorandum of Understanding with Green Sports Alliance to address environmental challenges faced by sports venues, organizations, and teams. Agreement will facilitate collaboration on issues such as waste management, water and energy conservation, and sustainability for teams and stadiums/sporting venues. EPA has also agreed to share tools like the Energy Star Portfolio Manager, which allows building owners to track and assess energy and water consumption. Read More

Twelve Organizations vie for 2012 Baldrige Award.

Twelve organizations have reached next step on road to silver anniversary Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation's highest recognition for organizational performance excellence. Baldrige Panel of Judges has selected 1 organization in manufacturing category, 1 in service, 2 in small business, 1 in education, 5 in health care, and 2 in nonprofit for final review. Teams of experts will now make site visits to clarify questions and verify information submitted in applications. Read More

EPA Awards Grants for drinking water treatment methods.

U.S. EPA announced almost $1.5 million in funding to 3 universities - University of Nevada, Reno; University of Florida, Gainesville and University of South Florida, Tampa; and Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY - for development of sustainable drinking water treatment methods. Funded through EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program grants are intended to provide innovative treatment methods to protect people's health by keeping harmful contaminants out of drinking water. Workshop to explore flexible printed electronics metrology.

On September 12-13, 2012, NIST and FlexTech Alliance will hold workshop on "Flexible Printed Electronics Metrology - The Status and Needs". Workshop will highlight growing need for reliable measurement tools to support rapidly developing electronics field, which uses organic semiconductors and other new materials. NIST SBIR Awards have been given to 12 companies.

As announced by NIST, 12 U.S. businesses received nearly $2 million in Phase I and Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards in order to help develop technologies that could lead to commercial and public benefit. SBIR program's goal is for companies to commercialize their technologies, where appropriate, in Phase III. NIST will provide awardees with technical and direct assistance and direct them to additional resources through Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Read More

ANSI-IREC Program issues first set of accreditations.

Three certificate-awarding entities have been accredited under ANSI-IREC pilot program for personnel training/education programs within energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. They include CalCERTS for training of Home Energy Rating System raters; CleanTech Education for training focused on solar photovoltaics and heating, energy efficiency, wind energy, green IT, and smart grid; and Midwest Renewable Energy Association, providing training related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. EPRI, Newton Labs work to profile used nuclear fuel assemblies.

Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) and Newton Research Labs, Inc. have teamed together to develop underwater laser scanning tool to measure individual alignment profile of used nuclear fuel assemblies. First successful demonstration of said technology was recently completed, and second phase of development/deployment will be announced in near future. After system is validated, it will be extended to also enable measurement of PWR fuel assemblies. Read More

Temporary Fuel Waiver supports 8 states impacted by hurricane.

September 7, 2012

As requested by Governors, EPA exercised its authority under Clean Air Act to temporarily waive certain federal clean gasoline requirements for gasoline sold and distributed in LA, MI, AL, GA, FL, TN, SC, and NC due to disruption in supply of fuel from Gulf-area refineries following Hurricane Isaac. Waiver granted by EPA in coordination with Department of Energy (DOE) will help ensure adequate supply of gasoline in impacted states until normal supply can be restored. Read More

NREL Summer Interns acquire lab experience.

For 10 weeks every summer, college students from across the country migrate to Golden, Colorado, to work side-by-side with top researchers at NREL, the only national laboratory solely focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. This summer, there were 4 different programs and 59 interns, including, for the first time, community college students. The largest program was the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship. NEMA taps Paul Molitor for SGIP transition team.

NEMA announced that it will dedicate Paul Molitor as Interim Executive Director of newly reorganized Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. In this role, Mr. Molitor will lead transition effort from SGIP government-run organization, to SGIP 2.0 that is industry led. Molitor is Assistant VP of Strategic Initiatives for NEMA and former Plenary Secretary of SGIP, which was established under Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to coordinate interoperability of Smart Grid devices and systems.
