NEMA Standard assists fitting manufacturers.

NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA FB 1-2014 Fittings, Cast Metal Boxes, and Conduit Bodies for Conduit, Electrical Metallic Tubing, and Cable. Standard assists fittings manufacturers in complying with third-party test requirements and assures compatibility with mating components of the electrical system. Last published in 2012, standard was developed by Conduit Fittings Section and is for manufacturers of conduit and cable fittings and cast metal boxes. Read More

NREL leads effort to get traffic moving in right direction.

NREL will serve as lead organization in developing a tool travelers and transportation officials can use in helping guide people through a city in most energy-efficient way. Connected Traveler project will use real-time traffic and GPS data, along with simulations that take into account demographic information and trips via ride-sharing programs. The Manufacturing Institute released a Return on Investment Calculator for manufacturers at CostofAHire.com. Web-based tool offers employers a structure to identify the cost of an open position and offers several ways to reduce costs. Produced in partnership with the National Aviation Consortium, led by Wichita Area Technical College, product helps manufacturers identify expenses across human resources, training, recruiting, and operations. SME designs Additive Manufacturing Contest.

SME-designed Additive Manufacturing Contest was a key component of the 51st annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Competition provided students with insight into additive manufacturing and hands-on experience using latest 3D printing technology and software. Teams were asked to use 3D CAD software to design car model meeting contest specifications. Teams were also tested on their knowledge of 3D printing with written exam and participated in 1-hr Quick Challenge. Read More

ANSI Standards Simulation Event is open to emerging professionals.

Open to students and young professionals, ANSI workshop simulating experience of creating voluntary consensus standards will be held on September 30, 2015 in Washington, DC. Event will include 2 standards simulation exercises – "Personal Space" and "The Sky is the Limit" – designed to foster understanding of what standards are and how they are developed through consensus-building processes. ASABE Forms New Technical Committee on Unmanned Aerial Systems.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announced formation of technical committee for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). This new committee (MS-60) will specifically focus on research, education, and development of standards pertaining to UAS in agriculture, associated autonomous control systems, integrated multi-mode sensor payloads, data links, and communication systems as  well as synthesis of UAS-derived data across ASABE technical interests. SME Education Foundation and Alcoa Foundation partnered with Wadsworth City Schools to offer more than 450 K-8 students a science, technology, engineering, and math ‘Mission: Mars’ summer camp experience. FAA Q&A Report addresses NASA controller fatigue assessment.

NASA Controller Fatigue Assessment Q&A report, released by FAA, shows steps taken to relieve issues regarding NASA controller fatigue. In 2012, FAA implemented Fatigue Risk Management System, which includes policy and practice changes to manage controller fatigue. Fatigue education, also included, promoted awareness about personal responsibilities. During National Truck Driving Championships, 420 professional truck drivers from all 50 states will compete in St. Louis for 4 days, challenging their driving skills, and knowledge of safety, equipment, and the industry. From 18-wheeler 5-axle sleepers to tank trucks to twin trailers—they will drive a course that recreates situations truck drivers face daily.
