Annual Aviation Forecast sees steady growth over 20 years.

FAA Aerospace Forecast Fiscal Years 2015 to 2035 indicates U.S. aviation system will continue to grow over next 2 decades as based on increased Revenue Passenger Miles, U.S. air carrier Load Factors, passenger counts, and air cargo traffic. According to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, improving economy bodes well for USA's air transportation system. Huerta also noted continuing deployment of NextGen technologies and procedures for safely and efficiently meeting increasing airspace demands. Read More

At SPE ANTEC® 2015, Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) will introduce 6 new Honored Service Members being recognized for their contributions to SPE. Candidates are those who've demonstrated long-term, outstanding service to, and support of, SPE and its objectives. New honorees are Dr. Paul Andersen; Dr. Brian Landes; Dr. Prithu Mukhopadhyay; Kimberly Rush; John R. Wagner, Jr.; and Mark P. Wolverton. Vinyl Saves Lives Project to benefit American Red Cross.

Vinyl (PVC) industry and its leaders have selected American Red Cross International Services to benefit from week-long "Vinyl Saves Lives" project and demonstration during NPE2015: The International Plastics Showcase (March 23–37 in Orlando, FL). Project will ask showcase's 60,000 attendees to support American Red Cross in its fight against Ebola and demonstrate how vinyl serves as critical component in manufacture of hundreds of medical products and therefore saving lives. Silicon Photonic Switch to be presented at OFC 2015.

Researchers at University of California, Berkeley have developed a novel silicon photonic switch, which is the largest-scale and lowest-energy loss switch reported to date. It features switching time of sub-micro seconds and broad bandwidth of hundreds of nanometers. Measuring 1 x 1 cm, switch has 50 input and 50 output channels, for total of 2,500 switching elements. IPC crowns winner of Hand Soldering World Championship.

IPC's Hand Soldering World Championship at IPC APEX EXPO® drew 8 victors from competitions in China, Europe, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the U.S. Participants were challenged with building a functional electronics assembly within 1-hour time limit. Completing championship round with a nearly perfect score of 247 points out of 248, Min Seok Kim, Samsung Thales Company Limited (Korea), was crowned champion, earning $1,000 cash prize and Metcal MX5210 soldering station. EPA Announcement names 70 Energy Star manufacturing plants.

As announced by U.S. EPA, 70 manufacturing plants in 29 states achieved Energy Star® certification for their superior energy performance in 2014. These manufacturing plants collectively saved record amount of energy, cut their energy bills by $725 million, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by >8 million metric tons. Energy Star certified plants are independently verified on an annual basis to have reached the top 25 percent of energy performance for their industries nationwide. Read More

NREL's PE-Licensed Engineers commit to sustainability.

Latest class of Professional Engineers at NREL has been around the world, helping soldiers, airmen, and indigenous peoples save energy while saving taxpayer dollars. Nationwide, about 20% of engineers earn their PE license, gained only after several years of work under the eyes of a veteran engineer, studying for hundreds of hours, and passing a series of two 8-hour tests. NREL Tool finds small battery systems offer attractive ROI.

NREL has used the Battery Lifetime Analysis and Simulation Tool to confirm that energy storage for demand-charge management can deliver attractive economic benefits. Analysis paired recent utility rate structures with historic data on solar photovoltaic electricity generation and commercial facility loads to evaluate 6,860 unique scenarios. Results revealed that, in absence of incentives, small battery systems reducing peak demand by 2.5% offer the most attractive return on investment. Read More
