ASTM Celebrates SMEs with program and website launch.

January 29, 2016

Launched by ASTM, "Year of the SME: Small Business in Action" will emphasize how input from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is crucial to creating technical standards. ASTM will also highlight advantages SMEs gain by being members, including consensus-driven approach that affords equal voice and vote alongside representatives of larger companies. ASTM also launched astm.org/sme, which highlights benefits, shares success stories, and provides information about events/opportunities. Read More

ANSI welcomed 16 new members in January 2016. These organizations joined a federation that represents more than 125,000 companies and over 3.5 million professionals. Under institute’s umbrella, this diverse constituency works together to strengthen competitiveness of businesses operating in the global marketplace and to improve quality of life for all citizens by developing, implementing, and promulgating voluntary consensus standards and related conformance assessment systems. IAPMO Group, member and audited designator of ANSI, announced promotions of 2 employees: Duane Huisken as senior vice president of marketing and communications, and Mitchell Morris as senior vice president of information technology. AAMA Releases Improvements, Clarifications to AAMA 507-15.

January 28, 2016

AAMA 507-15, “Standard Practice for Determining the Thermal Performance Characteristics of Fenestration Systems in Commercial Buildings,” has been updated. According to Joe Hayden (Pella) of AAMA 507 Review Task Group, primary driver for this revision was to improve and clarify reporting certificate – now changed to "Fenestration Product Rating Certificate." Other revisions include removal of outdated information as well as incremental improvements and editorial clarifications. Read More

NEMA supports Supreme Court decision on role of FERC.

January 28, 2016

NEMA welcomes U.S. Supreme Court determination that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has the authority to regulate demand response—paying consumers to use less electricity during times of peak demand—in wholesale electricity markets. According to decision, FERC has the authority to regulate demand response at the wholesale level under Section 824 of the Federal Power Act. States have the authority to regulate electricity at the retail level. Read More

NIST opened competition to award new cooperative funding agreements for its Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) centers in 12 states and Puerto Rico. Competition continues multiyear effort to update program’s funding structure to better match manufacturing industry needs with resources in MEP's nationwide network. Dr. Andy Pickard receives Frank W. Reinhart Award.

Professional chemist Andy Pickard, Ph.D., a consultant based in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, has received the Frank W. Reinhart Award from ASTM International. An ASTM member since 1978, Pickard received the award for his outstanding service to ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels and Lubricants, notably his technical guidance to terminology standardization. Pickard has nearly 50 years of experience in the petroleum products and liquid fuels sector. Read More

ASTM Nonferrous Metals Committee honors Dr. Abbas Mirza.

Citing dedicated service and numerous contributions, ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys presented Gary M. Kralik Distinguished Service Award to Abbas Mirza, Ph.D. With ASTM since 2007, Mirza served as vice chairman of Subcommittee on Lead, Tin, Antimony and Their Alloys (B02.02) since 2010 and served multiple terms as B02 membership secretary. FAA registers nearly 300,000 unmanned aircraft owners.

January 28, 2016

In the first 30 days after FAA's online registration system went live, nearly 300,000 owners have registered their small unmanned aircraft used for recreational or hobby purposes. FAA’s registration rule, which took effect on December 21, 2015, applies to small unmanned aircraft that weigh between 0.55 lb and 55 lb. Owners of these aircraft must register before they fly outdoors. People who operated their small unmanned aircraft before December 21 must register by February 19, 2016. Read More

During 2016 Winter Conference, 54 people were recognized for contributions to ASHRAE and the industry. F. Paul Anderson Award, ASHRAE’s highest for technical achievement in the HVAC&R field, was given to Presidential Member Thomas E. Watson, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, and director of the Daikin Learning Institution. Some other categories included ASHRAE Hall of Fame, Fellow ASHRAE, ASHRAE Technology Awards, Student Design Competition awards, and E.K. Campbell Award of Merit. Read More

Accessible from desktop, tablet, or other device, 90.1 ECB web application leverages Energy Cost Budget (ECB) method to automate calculations needed to show building project compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Modeling compliance tool lets users input project parameters and calculates proposed design's projected performance and compliance. Results may be exported in workable spreadsheet for project use. Jimmy Rasco of Ergon, Inc. (Jackson, MI) was honored by ASTM International with Charles A. Johnson Award for contributions to ASTM Committee D27 on Electrical Insulating Liquids and Gases. As D27 member and chairman of Subcommittee on Mineral Oils (D27.01), Rasco contributed to development of several international standards concerning analysis and specification of mineral oils and recycled oils, oxidation stability, and dissolved gases in insulating liquids. ASTM International Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials presented Ted Linde Leadership Award to Daniel Geist. A member of ASTM since 2006, Geist is director of operations at Analytical Reference Materials International, part of LGC Standards. He plays an active role on multiple E01 groups, holding leadership roles such as chair of Subcommittee on Fundamental Practices and secretary of Subcommittees on Terminology/Editorial and Long-Range Planning.
