SME Announces Its Officers and Directors for 2015.

SME announced its 2015 officers and directors, who will comprise its Board of Directors. In addition to new and returning officers and directors, SME will welcome 2015 President Wayne F. Frost, CMfgE. New/returning officers include President-Elect Dean L. Bartles, PhD; Vice President Sandra L. Bouckley; Treasurer Thomas R. Kurfess, PhD; and Secretary Mark L. Michalski. BIO Says EPA Must Improve Renewable Fuel Standard administration.

According to BIO, EPA delays in administering Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) generate uncertainty for advanced biofuel industry and undercut investment. BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood cited EPA's failure to issue final 2014 RFS rule and other administrative delays as misconstrued as indicative of broken program but reassured that that same program has worked to spur innovation and growth in biofuels space and subsequently reduce U.S. GHG emissions and reliance on foreign oil. AAMA updates lamination of composite materials specification.

AAMA has updated AAMA 312, Voluntary Specification for the Lamination of Wood and Cellulosic Composite Materials Intended for Use on AAMA Certified Profiles. Document provides common test methods for determining acceptable level of adhesion after exposure to cyclic weatherability conditions, both interior and exterior applications. It also includes protocol for certification to formaldehyde emissions, additional details to accelerated exposure options, and updates regarding chemical resistance. Report Cites $163 Billion needed to fix surface transportation.

Released by AASHTO and American Public Transportation Association, "2015 Bottom Line Report" estimates required annual capital investment over 6 years, by all levels of government, in the amount of $120 billion in USA's highway and bridge network and $43 billion in USA's public transportation infrastructure to meet current demand. Currently, $83 billion is invested in roads and bridges and $17.1 billion is invested in public transit. Read More

EPA Rule promotes responsible hazardous materials recycling.

EPA conducted rigorous environmental justice analysis of 2008 Definition of Solid Waste rule that examined location of recycling facilities and their proximity and potential impact to adjacent residents. New finalized safeguards promote responsible recycling of hazardous secondary materials and demonstrate significant step forward in promoting recycling innovation, resulting in resource conservation and economic benefits, while strengthening protections for environmental justice communities. FAA grants commercial UAS exemptions.

December 17, 2014

FAA granted regulatory exemptions to 4 companies that want to fly unmanned aircraft systems to perform aerial surveying, construction site monitoring, and oil rig flare stack inspections. Commercial entities that received exemptions are Trimble Navigation Limited; VDOS Global, LLC; Clayco, Inc.; and Woolpert, Inc. Secretary Foxx found that UAS in proposed operations do not need FAA-issued certificate of airworthiness because they do not pose threat to national airspace users or national security. Read More

PREP Act Declaration will advance Ebola vaccine development.

BIO applauds declaration by Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act which will help advance development and availability of experimental Ebola vaccines.
