NASA Administrator announces commercial crew, cargo milestones.

August 27, 2012

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden announced that Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) will launch first of its 12 contracted cargo flights to International Space Station (ISS) from Cape Canaveral in October under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services Program. Also announced by Bolden, NASA partner Sierra Nevada Corp conducted its first program implementation plan review. This marks important first step in efforts to develop crew transportation system with Dream Chaser spacecraft. Read More

NEMA's Mike Leibowitz is honored with IEC 1906 Award.

Veteran program manager Mike Leibowitz received IEC 1906 Award, which honors International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) experts for exceptional and recent achievement related to activities of IEC. According to IEC, Leibowitz was recognized for "extraordinary technical and organizational support to TC 113." This included taking minutes and drafting plenary resolutions as well as acting as link to US TAG. Leibowitz was also commended on his "serious and tireless work ethic." Read More

Scheduled for Nov 14, third symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Metallic Medical Materials and Devices will be held in Atlanta, GA. Celebrating 50-year membership anniversaries with IPC, MacDermid, Inc. and Northrop Grumman were feted at IPC Midwest Conference and Exhibition. ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for July.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for July was $6.6 billion, up 15.8% from $5.7 billion during same period in 2011. Volume was down 17.5% from previous month, and year-to-date cumulative new business volume increased 14.7%. Receivables over 30 days were 2.2%, down from 2.4% in June, while charge-offs decreased to 0.4% in July, down from 0.6% in June, and credit approvals decreased to 77.5% in July from 78.7% in June. CWA Violation Penalty addresses wastewater, stormwater discharge.

To resolve Clean Water Act (CWA) violations at its Suffolk Downs racetrack facility in Revere and East Boston, MA, Sterling Suffolk Racecourse LLC will pay civil penalty of $1.25 million. Company is also spending over $3 million to prevent polluted water from entering nearby waterways and will perform 3 environmental projects worth ~$742,000 that will provide water quality monitoring and protection efforts for 123+ square miles of watershed. Settlement with INEOS rectifies TSCA import violations.

August 24, 2012

To resolve Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) violations, INEOS Chlor Americas, Inc. has ended importation of short-chained chlorinated paraffins into USA and will pay $175,000 civil penalty. INEOS has also agreed to provide notices required by TSCA Section 5 to EPA for any medium- or long-chain chlorinated paraffin it wishes to import after date of lodging of decree. Allegedly, INEOS imported various chain-length chlorinated paraffins into USA without providing required notice to EPA. Read More

NTSB Safety Recommendations look at fatigue management.

Supplementing reiterations, NTSB issued 3 new safety recommendations to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. These included H-12-29, for establishing ongoing program to monitor, evaluate, report on, and continuously improve fatigue management programs; H-12-30, for incorporating scientifically based fatigue mitigation strategies into hours-of-service regulations; and H-12-30, for reviewing each new entrant motor carrier structured process as component of new entrant safety audits.
