Research suggests Heisenberg's original formulation is wrong.

Researchers from University of Toronto set up apparatus to measure polarization of a pair of entangled photons. Their main goal was to quantify how much the act of measuring polarization disturbed the photons, which they did by observing light particles both before and after measurement. Results were published online in journal Physical Review Letters and researchers will present their findings at OSA's Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics, Oct. 14 -18. EPA announces e-filing system for environmental reviews.

October 11, 2012

With e-NEPA online system, federal agencies can submit environmental impact statements electronically, eliminating need to mail or deliver copies to EPA headquarters, which reduces printing, shipping and delivery costs. Process also improves transparency, allowing EPA to post EIS documents to website. As of October 1, 2012, all agencies are required to use e-NEPA filing system.

IEC and IEEE announce winners of global IEC-IEEE Challenge.

IEC-IEEE Challenge was launched by chief executives of both organizations with goal of stimulating global discussion on the role technology plays in social, environmental, and political development, and how universal standards influence this process. Ken Krechmer of the University of Colorado was chosen as first prize winner for his paper, "Cloud Computing Standardization" and received cash prize of $20,000. Second prize was awarded to Axel Mangelsdorf and third prize went to Joyce van de Vegte. Read More

U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders rise 4.1% over 2011.

October 10, 2012

Reported by companies participating in United States Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) program, August U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $470.44 million – up 3.4% from July but down 4.7% from August 2011. Year-to-date total, $3,606.56 million, was up 4.1% compared to 2011. In comment, AMT President Douglas K. Woods said, "It's a great sign for the industry to see both month-to-month and year-over-year gains in August, historically one of the slowest months for orders." Read More

Q4 Economic Outlook Report shows decelerating growth.

According to quarterly update to 2012 Equipment Leasing and Finance U.S. Economic Outlook, projected growth in equipment and software investment for 2012 is 6.7%, down from 2011 growth rate of 11.0%. Growth slowed to annualized rate of 4.8% in Q2, down from 5.4% in Q1. Report finds that recent slowdown in durable goods shipments indicates that equipment investment continued to lose momentum in Q3, but should remain positive—albeit at decelerated pace compared to 2011—through rest of 2012.
