NREL receives accolades from industry groups and DOE.

NREL and its employees have garnered awards from industry groups for advancing energy research as well as furthering lab's sustainable operating practices. Bryan Pivovar was named Charles W. Tobias Young Investigator by Electrochemical Society, while John Turner received Lectureship Award from Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry. Matt Keyser was honored by CO-LABS with Award for High Impact Research. Also, DOE presented NREL with Sustainability Award for Comprehensive Energy Management. Read More

Frederick G. Wright selected as AASHTO Executive Director.

At annual meeting in Pittsburgh, PA, AASHTO's Board of Directors voted to approve Frederick G. "Bud" Wright to be 7th executive director of organization. Wright succeeds John Horsley, AASHTO's executive director since 1999 who is retiring February 1, 2013. Currently transportation consultant based in Alexandria, Virginia, Wright served as Executive Director of FHWA from 2001-2008 and, from 2001-2002, was FHWA program manager for safety. A collaboration between the Manufacturing Institute, MAPI, and NAM, 9th Edition of the Facts About Modern Manufacturing consists of a compilation of 65 slides and analysis presenting wide array of data for manufacturing sector. For example, every dollar in final sales of manufactured products supports $1.34 in output from other sectors. In December 2011, manufacturing employers paid $32.93/hr in wages and benefits, while all employers in economy paid approximately $30.44/hr. Read More

AASHTO Board elects new president and vice president.

November 21, 2012

At its annual meeting in Pittsburgh, AASHTO's Board of Directors voted to elect Rhode Island Transportation Director Michael Lewis as AASHTO's president for next year. Mike Hancock, Secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, was elected AASHTO VP. As president, Lewis will emphasize deployment of new technologies, implementation of reforms included in Moving Ahead for Progress in 21st Century Act, and leading AASHTO's effort to pass next surface transportation reauthorization bill. Next Gen Standards Professionals get glimpse of future careers.

During 2012 World Standards Week, 25 students, new faculty, and new professionals, along with numerous observers, gathered for workshop simulating experience of taking part in process of creating voluntary consensus standards. Workshop made use of standards simulation exercise, titled "Setting Standards: Exercise in Strategy and Cooperation in Standardization Process," provided by NIST. Working Group Co-Chairs appointed to lead ANSI EESCC activity.

ANSI Energy Efficiency Standardization Coordination Collaborative has announced appointment of 8 working group co-chairs who will help lead development of EESCC standardization roadmap addressing energy efficiency in the built environment. Roadmap will identify what standards, codes, and conformance solutions are currently available, where gaps may exist, and what additional standardization activities may be needed to advance energy efficiency in the United States. Foundation releases November 2012 Monthly Confidence Index.

According to November 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry, overall confidence is 49.9, a decrease from October index of 53.3, reflecting post-election concerns over issues including the fiscal cliff, economic policy, and taxes. When asked to assess business conditions over next 4 months, 9.1% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, up from 8.6% in October, and 21.2% believe business conditions will worsen, up from 17.1% the previous month. PTDA elects 2013 leadership at Industry Summit.

At Industry Summit in Dallas, Texas, PTDA elected its 2013 Board of Directors, including Chris Bursack of ISC Companies, Inc. as President, succeeding Mitch Bouchard. Board will also include First Vice President Ken Miko, Second Vice President Harold Dunaway, and Treasurer Keith Nowak. ASTM Invites Participation in SLAB recycling standards meeting.

November 21, 2012

Meeting on Dec. 3, 2012 in Washington, D.C. from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm will be held to discuss potential for developing standards for spent lead acid battery (SLAB) recycling. One mechanism to improve safety of SLAB recycling is to develop international performance standards that any facility can meet and any generator or handler of SLABs can require of their downstream processors. Adapteva Joins EEMBC to participate in benchmark development.

Daniel E. Williams, Chief Engineer of Advanced Engineering with TRW Automotive Commercial Steering Systems, has been named winner of 2012 L. Ray Buckendale Lecture Award from SAE International. At 2012 SAE International Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress, held in Rosemont, IL, Williams presented his technical paper, "Multi-Axle Vehicle Dynamics." Award provides for annual lecture dealing with automotive ground vehicles for on- or off-road operation in commercial or military service. Read More

Manufacturers urge policymakers to take action on fiscal abyss.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after congressional leaders met with President Obama to discuss the fiscal abyss at the White House. According to Timmons, manufacturers need action on the fiscal abyss because they are already being squeezed by economic uncertainty. FL and CA DOT Projects have been named best in USA.

At 5th annual America's Transportation Award competition, Florida DOT claimed People's Choice Award for A. Max Brewer Bridge Replacement project and California DOT earned judges' Grand Prize award for I-405/Sepulveda Pass–Mulholland Bridge Demolition project (Carmageddon). To support charity or academic scholarship program of choice, AASHTO presented $10,000 cash prizes to both DOTs in recognition of their outstanding projects. Read More

BIO applauds EPA response to RFS waiver requests.

According to BIO, EPA's logic-based decision to uphold Renewable Fuel Standard will protect America's energy security and maintain industry's progress in commercializing advanced biofuels. BIO previously submitted comments to the agency noting that any waiver of RFS would certainly harm biofuel producers and biotechnology companies across the U.S. Decision allows BIO member companies to continue to deliver innovative technologies to the market to expand domestic production of biofuels. ABNT, the Brazilian member body to ISO, has submitted proposal for new International Standard on process management related to field of research, development, and innovation. According to proposal, standard would include test methods, sampling criteria, safety requirements, and other guidance on RD&I activities that are intended to promote business sustainability and to make it easier for relevant groups to ensure effectiveness and consistence of their RD&I activities.
