ELFA's December 2012 MCI-EFI shows declining confidence.

According to December 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI), confidence in equipment finance market is 48.5, down from November's 49.9, and reflects concerns regarding impact of fiscal issues on capital expenditures despite overall sense of optimism. Of executives responding to prediction of business conditions over next 4 months, 5.9% expected improvement, 73.5% said it would remain same, and 20.6% believe conditions will worsen. Read More

EPA Enforcement protects communities from harmful pollution.

U.S. EPA released its annual enforcement results, showing significant environmental and public health protections achieved. In 2012, there was a reduction of 2.2 billion pounds of air, water, and land pollution, as well as 4.4 billion pounds of hazardous waste, and $252 million in civil and criminal penalties levied. In addition, EPA also focused on enforcement efforts that reduce smaller amounts of pollution but have substantial health impact in communities. Read More

ASC Identifies Regulatory Issues Focus and changes nomenclature.

December 20, 2012

Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) announced that its regulatory affairs focus in 2013 will be South Coast Air Quality Management District's (SCAQMD) plan to reopen Rule 1168 and U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) efforts to revise their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. To align its actual activities with committee name, ASC is changing from Government Relations Committee to the Regulatory Affairs Committee. Read More

Focusing on areas of materials ingredient reporting, ratings systems, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), and LEED review process, Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) provided input to United State Green Building Council's (USGBC) latest revision of their new building construction rating system, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED v4). ANSI-NSP Meeting rescheduled for February 2013.

Originally scheduled for October 30, 2012, ANSI's Nanotechnology Standards Panel meeting was postponed as a result of Hurricane Sandy and will now be held on February 4, 2013. Meeting will examine how current nanotechnology standards are being utilized and how standards activities meet existing stakeholder needs. Benefits of participating in nanotechnology standardization and the possibilities for greater collaboration between stakeholders in this area will also be discussed. Read More

ANSI Members receive NIST Education Challenge Grants.

December 20, 2012

Standards Services division of NIST awarded 6 Education Challenge Grants to help improve integration of standardization into formal curriculum of business and engineering programs at U.S. colleges and universities. Two grants were awarded to projects overseen by partnership between Purdue University and SES (Society for Standards Professionals), an ANSI organizational member, and other grants went to ANSI organizational members Georgetown University and San Jose State University. Construction Materials Prices fall 1.1% in November.

In a sign of a weak global economy, nation's construction materials prices fell 1.1% in November—the largest monthly decrease since February 2009—according to producer price index report by U.S. Department of Labor. However, prices are 1% higher than the same time last year. ABC Chief Economist, Anirban Basu, stated that investors may be reducing their positions in economically sensitive commodities in response to fears regarding America's fiscal cliff. Read More

Clean Air Standards help reduce harmful soot pollution.

December 19, 2012

In response to court order, EPA finalized update to national air quality standards for harmful fine particle pollution, including soot, setting annual health standard at 12 µg/cubic meter. Fine particle pollution can penetrate deep into lungs and has been linked to premature death, heart attacks, and strokes, as well as acute bronchitis and aggravated asthma among children. By 2020, 99% of U.S. counties are projected to meet revised health standard without any additional actions. NREL, Johnson Matthey announce collaboration on biofuels.

December 19, 2012

NREL will partner with global specialty chemicals company Johnson Matthey in 5-year, $7 million effort to produce drop-in gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from non-food biomass feedstocks. Work is to be conducted under Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) and is, according to NREL's Rich Bolin, "a way of leveraging the expertise of two organizations to solve a pressing national and international problem" and improve vapor phase upgrading during biomass pyrolysis process. Legislation will increase access to Russia's growing market.

President Obama signed the Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal Act to grant the U.S. Permanent Normal Trade Relations with Russia. As the ninth-largest economy in the world, the Russian market presents a great opportunity to grow exports and create American jobs. NAM worked extensively to educate members of Congress of the importance of PNTR legislation to manufacturers, holding countless meetings in both House and Senate. ANSI/DIN Standardization Roundtable was held in Berlin.

ANSI, together with German Institute for Standardization (DIN), held roundtable discussion on German and U.S. priorities for standardization in Berlin on November 30, 2012. Roundtable included key public- and private-sector experts from both countries and covered several common priority topics: electric vehicles and e-mobility, smart cities and smart grid technologies, and civil- and cybersecurity. AIA mourns loss of Senator Daniel Inouye.

The senior-most member of US Senate and second-longest serving Senator in American history, Daniel Inouye continuously represented Hawaii in Congress since it achieved statehood in 1959. A long-time advocate for aerospace and defense issues, Inouye served on Senate Commerce and Appropriations Committees for more than 40 yrs, chairing Appropriations Committee since 2009 as well as Defense Subcommittee, where he crafted legislation that ensured US armed services were equipped to face any threat.
