NEMA has published Evaluating Fire- and Heat-Damaged Electrical Equipment, a guide that provides information on how to evaluate electrical equipment that has been exposed to heat and fire residue through fire, firefighting activities, or close proximity to fire. NEMA hires first public relations specialist.

NEMA announced that Phallan K. Davis has joined its staff as its first public relations specialist. To advance interests of NEMA's 400-plus member companies, Davis will raise NEMA's profile to media, government, and other external sources for matters pertaining to electroindustry, including Smart Grid, storm and disaster recovery, and how to reduce product's carbon footprint. Davis comes to NEMA with more than 7 years of agency, nonprofit, and political communications experience. Read More

BIO Convention to address China's growing biotech sector.

Executives from biotech and pharmaceutical companies, along with investment firms from North America, Europe, and Asia, will convene for 3rd annual BIO Convention in China, where they will meet and explore business opportunities with China’s emerging biotech sector. Panel sessions will highlight latest issues and trends, and will include science-focused topics such as vaccine development, China’s unmet medical needs, and research and development of orphan drugs to treat rare diseases in China. Nondestructive Testing Committee honors William Plumstead.

William C. Plumstead Sr., president, CEO, and principle nondestructive testing engineer Level III of Plumstead Quality and Training Services Inc., has received Lifetime Achievement Award from ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. A member of ASTM and E07 since 1970, Plumstead was honored  for his distinguished service and dedication to advancement of quality in nondestructive testing industry through standards development. New ISO Standards are available from NFPA.

NFPA has made available 2 new ISO standards: ISO 1179-1:2013 and ISO 1179-2:2013. ISO 1179-1:2013 specifies dimensions for ports with ISO 228-1 threads for use with non-adjustable stud ends in ISO 1179-2/-3/-4 and adjustable stud ends in ISO 1179-3. ISO 1179-2:2013 specifies dimensions, performance requirements, and test procedures for heavy-duty (S series) and light-duty (L series) stud ends with ISO 228-1 threads and elastomeric sealing (type E) used with them. Judge Rules on RIA vs. ThermaPure, TPE Associates, Hedman.

November 12, 2013

In January 2013, Restoration Industry Association (RIA) filed suit in U.S. District Court against David Hedman and ThermaPure to invalidate patents held by ThermaPure, TPE Associates, and Hedman. Defendants argued that since they had never sought to enforce those other patents and there is no indication at this time that they have attempted to enforce them, those counts should be dismissed. Judge James V. Selna agreed and dismissed all patents from case except U.S. Patent No. 6,327,812. Read More

Federal Facilities earn Energy Star CHP Award.

November 12, 2013

EPA recognized two federal facilities with ENERGY STAR Combined Heat and Power Award for their highly efficient CHP systems, which increase reliability of electricity supply while reducing carbon pollution. National Archives and Records Administration CHP system achieved an operating efficiency of 72%. Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany CHP system, using renewable landfill gas to produce energy that supports essential base operations, saves approximately $1.3 million annually in energy costs.
