NEMA published ANSI C82.77-10-2014 American National Standard for Lighting Equipment — Harmonic Emission Limits — Related Power Quality Requirements, which specifies harmonic limits, their methods of measurement, and power factor for lighting equipment. Development of one standard that specifies limits of total harmonic distortion helps ensure that manufacturer's equipment meets industry guidelines and protects overall power system quality. NEMA publishes Premium® Efficiency Electric Motors spec.

NEMA has published NEMA Premium® 2014 General Specification for Consultants, Industrial and Municipal: NEMA Premium® Efficiency Electric Motors. Specification outlines minimum requirements for 3-phase AC induction motors applied to municipal and industrial applications for operation on voltages 5,000 V or less, rated 2,500 hp or less, operating more than 2,000 hours per year at >75% of full-load. ASTM A1090/A1090M, Specification for Forged Rings and Hollows Produced from Steels with Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance, provides guidance for production of steel bases of power transmission poles using forging methods. ASTM Committee to develop standards for driverless AGVs.

January 7, 2015

Technical committee F45 on Driverless Automatic Guided Industrial Vehicles will develop standardized nomenclature and definitions of terms, recommended practices, guides, test methods, specifications, and performance standards for AGVs. In addition, F45 will encourage research by sponsoring symposia, workshops, and publications related to AGVs. Some topics for potential standards development include terminology; specifications for navigation technologies; and test methods for battery life. Read More

International CES® and Radius Networks announced that the 2015 CES will feature a new navigation system for attendees, powered by Bluetooth Low Energy beacons. Accessible through CES app, system will provide attendees with directions to exhibit locations within CES Tech West and Tech East. In total, system covers estimated 4 million square feet of space. ASTM Nonmetallic Lath Standards apply to use with stucco.

ASTM International Committee C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems approved 2 nonmetallic plaster base standards. While ASTM C1787 provides minimum performance requirements when nonmetallic plaster base (lath) is used with stucco, ASTM C1788 lists minimum installation requirements for nonmetallic lath with stucco. Also available, ASTM C1764 offers test methods for evaluating performance of vertical wall applications of lath under various test exposures. NEMA Business Conditions Gauges decline in December.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America declined to 50.0 in December. While one quarter of panelists reported conditions improved during said month, same share reported they declined. December's EBCI for future North American conditions remained above 50-point break even mark but declined to 65. Half of panelists expect business environment to improve over next 6 months versus 20% who expect it to decline. Read More

ASTM WK42461, Test Method for Density (Unit Weight) and Air Content (Pressure Method) of Freshly Mixed Roller-Compacted Concrete will address roller-compacted concrete used in construction of dams and spillways as well as for highway road base material and wearing surfaces on some roads and parking lots. XTO to Restore Areas damaged by natural gas extraction.

XTO Energy, Inc (XTO) will spend estimated $3 million to restore 8 sites damaged by unauthorized discharges of fill material into streams and wetlands in connection with hydraulic fracturing operations. Additionally, XTO will implement plan to comply with federal and state water protection laws at West Virginia oil and gas extraction facilities that use horizontal drilling methods. ASTM WK39447, Specification for Metric Outside Diameter Polyethylene (PE) Plastic Pressure Pipe (DRPN), will cover premier high-density polyethylene compounds used in plastic piping systems worldwide. Standard establishes material and product requirements, and tests for verification of compliance. It will be limited to PE4710 that is hydrostatic design basis- and hydrostatic design stress-rated using ASTM procedures; and PE100 that is minimum required strength-rated using ISO procedures. IPC releases PCB industry results for November 2014.

According to November findings from its monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, strong year-on-year order growth kept PCB book-to-bill ratio high, while sales remained slightly below last year. Total PCB shipments decreased 3.4% in November 2014 from November 2013, bringing year-to-date shipment growth to -1.2%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments were down 5.0%. PCB bookings increased by 12.4% compared to November 2013, improving year-to-date order growth rate to -0.1%. Read More
