Michael Carano appointed IPC Ambassador Council chair.

Michael Carano, director of new products and business development with OM Group Electronic Chemicals, LLC, has been appointed IPC Ambassador Council chairman. Council is comprised of members of the IPC Hall of Fame, who use their knowledge, experience, and insights to provide advice and guidance to IPC and its programs to further advance the electronics industry. Carano, who currently serves on IPC's Board of Directors, succeeds the late Dieter Bergman. Read More

ASTM Standard describes properties of metal powders.

ASTM F3049, Guide for Characterizing Properties of Metal Powders Used for Additive Manufacturing Processes, will benefit makers and users of metal powders. According to ASTM member John A. Slotwinski, this standard will help "point readers to existing metal powder standards that may be appropriate for additive manufacturing powders. Standard covers fatigue testing of medical device fine wire.

Solid, round, fine wire is often used in devices such as catheter guide wires, stents, and containment vessels. ASTM E2948, Test Method for Conducting Rotating Bending Fatigue Tests of Solid Round Fine Wire, will be used to determine fatigue life characteristics of such wire in order to assess reliability. Test method describes procedure for performance of rotating beam fatigue tests of small diameter wire at specified life in fatigue regime where strains are predominantly and nominally elastic. After successful first year, AMT will host second annual Automation in Manufacturing Conference on June 4, 2015, and has issued call for speakers. This year's theme will be "Building Our Manufacturing Future with Automation." One-day event will consist of presentations by major industry users of automation, as well as builders/integrators. SME announced its 2015 officers and directors, who will comprise its Board of Directors. In addition to new and returning officers and directors, SME will welcome 2015 President Wayne F. Frost, CMfgE. New/returning officers include President-Elect Dean L. Bartles, PhD; Vice President Sandra L. Bouckley; Treasurer Thomas R. Kurfess, PhD; and Secretary Mark L. Michalski. BIO Says EPA Must Improve Renewable Fuel Standard administration.

According to BIO, EPA delays in administering Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) generate uncertainty for advanced biofuel industry and undercut investment. BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood cited EPA's failure to issue final 2014 RFS rule and other administrative delays as misconstrued as indicative of broken program but reassured that that same program has worked to spur innovation and growth in biofuels space and subsequently reduce U.S. GHG emissions and reliance on foreign oil. IPC Issues Comments on EPS's unofficial 2014 DSW Rule.

After U.S. EPA's unofficial release of its final version of 2011 proposed revisions to Definition of Solid Waste (DSW) rule, IPC claimed final rule fails to provide adequate regulatory relief for manufacturers wishing to recycle secondary materials. IPC's Fern Abrams said IPC was "disappointed" over insufficient secondary materials recycling promotion incentives and also cited lingering "onerous and unnecessary" requirements.
