World Without Standards Competition seeks student papers.

December 3, 2015

ANSI, in conjunction with its Committee on Education (CoE), announced fifth-annual student paper competition to help spread awareness among post-secondary students of strategic significance of standards and conformance. Theme for 2016 is "A World without Standards," and entries are due by 5:00 pm ET on April 29, 2016. Submissions should demonstrate specific examples to highlight how products, services, and systems would be affected without effects of standards. Read More

FMA announces plans to move headquarters.

December 3, 2015

FMA announced plans to move its headquarters office and operations from Rockford, IL, to Elgin, IL. Relocation will offer greater access for FMA members, suppliers, and other industry stakeholders, particularly those located in the greater Chicago area or approximate to the Interstate 90 corridor. FMA anticipates breaking ground to construct a new building in April and occupancy to occur in November. Office will be located near the intersection of Interstate 90 and the Randall Road exit. MWRA moves forward with Pump System Optimization.

December 3, 2015

Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, established to provide wholesale water and sewer services to 2.5 million people and more than 5,500 large industrial users in 61 metropolitan Boston communities, conducted an in-house Pump System Optimization Program as a precursor to a pump system assessment of all its facilities. Program was developed by HI to educate staff in operating pump systems more efficiently and to show how pump system optimization process identifies problematic areas. Read More

Application Guide covers AC adjustable speed drive systems.

NEMA has published NEMA ICS 7.2-2015 Application Guide to assist users in proper selection and application of AC adjustable speed drive systems. Guide covers AC electrical drive systems rated 600 V or less, consisting of 3-phase induction motors, voltage-source pulse-width modulated adjustable frequency controls, and associated components. It also addresses common issues that should be considered in selection of drive system components and installation and application of drive system. Read More

SPI Bioplastics Division recognized by USDA.

USDA recognized Bioplastics Division of SPI for its contributions to their report, titled "An Economic Impact Analysis of the U.S. Biobased Products Industry: A Report to the Congress of the United States of America." Report made specific recommendations for how lawmakers can support continued growth of U.S. biobased products industrial sector. Bioplastics Division contributed by providing interviews with researchers as well as a copy of Division’s 2012 Bioplastics Industry Overview Guide. Read More

Plastics Industry Trade Association's Flexible Film and Bag Division (FFBD) announced 3 newly elected board members: Jason Keiswetter, director of marketing at Petoskey Plastics; Mike Moran, North American director of sales for the Dow Chemical Company’s Performance Plastics Business; and David Nunes, president of Hosokawa Alpine American. On Dec 3–4, 2015, The Optical Society will host an incubator meeting on Levitated Optomechanics to discuss innovative technologies surrounding nano-optomechanics. Following brief ballot period, SPI's RPPG Executive Committee welcomed Brad Crosby, President and CEO of Airlite Plastics Co., as Chairman and Terrence Harper, Executive VP for Printpack Inc., as Vice Chairman. Each of the new leaders will serve a 2-year term on the Executive Committee, which directs activities of RPPG, an SPI member division consisting of company representatives from supplier, processor, converter, and brand owner segments of the rigid plastic packaging supply chain. North American PCB Sales Growth continues at slow pace.

December 2, 2015

According to IPC's monthly North American Printed Circuit Board Statistical Program, modest sales growth continued in October and book-to-bill ratio retreated to 1.02. Total North American PCB shipments increased 1.4% in October 2015 compared to October 2014, and year-to-date shipment growth continued positive at 0.4%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments were down 6.9%. PCB bookings declined sharply to -20.5% compared to October 2014, reducing year-to-date order growth to 2.1%. Read More

ANSI, together with the German Institute for Standardization, held roundtable discussion focusing on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and its opportunities for market access and trade, in addition to various international standardization updates. RIA Announces Carole Franklin as standards development director.

Robotic Industries Association (RIA) announced Carole Franklin, PMP, as new Director of Standards Development for RIA. As expert project manager and facilitator, Franklin's prior work with consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton included process improvement and communication projects for clients at federal R&D facility (TARDEC). Current Business Conditions Index climbs above 50 points.

December 1, 2015

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Conditions Index for current conditions in North America measured 58.3 in November as a larger share of panelists reported conditions improved (33%) than reported they deteriorated (17%). November EBCI reading was a substantial increase from the 44.7 recorded in October. In contrast, EBCI for future North American conditions fell to 55.6 in November, down from 68.4 in October. NIST seeks comments on data integrity project.

National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence at NIST is seeking comments on a new project to help organizations prepare for, and recover from, attacks that might compromise data. Project will explore methods to recover operating systems, databases, user files, applications, and software/system configurations. Described in draft whitepaper, Data Integrity: Reducing the Impact of an Attack, project will also explore issues of auditing and reporting to support recovery operations. Read More

Voluntary Standards cover thermoplastic containers, male condoms.

Published by NSF International, NSF/ANSI 212015 establishes minimum sanitation requirements for materials, design, and construction of new thermoplastic containers intended for indoor and outdoor storage of refuse. ASTM International published ASTM D349215, Standard Specification for Rubber Contraceptives (Male Condoms), to ensure condoms are manufactured to safety requirements. This ANS is intended to assist buyers in obtaining condoms of consistent quality. Read More
