NASA tests shape changing aircraft flap.

NASA's green aviation project is one step closer to developing technology that could make future airliners quieter and more fuel-efficient with successful flight test of wing surface that can change shape in flight. Adaptive Compliant Trailing Edge project is a joint effort between NASA and US Air Force Research Laboratory, using flaps designed and built by FlexSys, Inc. FlexFoil variable geometry airfoil system can be retrofitted to existing airplane wings or integrated into new airframes. Automotive Technologies drive innovation at 2015 CES.

CEA® announced launch of the Vehicle Intelligence Marketplace at the 2015 International CES®, which will run Jan 6–9, 2015. Vehicle Intelligence Marketplace will feature autonomous driving, collision avoidance, and vehicle communication technologies. Exhibitors in this area will have the opportunity to conduct track demonstrations within the parking lot as well as on-the-road demos. ASTM Committee Approves Standard to test for glycols in motor oil.

ASTM International standard D7922, Test Method for Determination of Glycol for In-Service Engine Oils by Gas Chromatography, is intended for use by companies that use large, industrial engines. Test method describes analysis for ethylene glycol that looks for single component in complex matrix of engine oil. Dirty used oil sample is directly reacted with chemical that will derivatize ethylene glycol to form another compound: ethylene glycol phenylboronate (EGPBA). Read More

Ajay Bajaj and Cliff Bannon to lead PTDA in 2015.

PTDA elected its 2015 Board of Directors and Manufacturer Council at PTDA Industry Summit. Ajay Bajaj, president of Rotator Products Limited, will become PTDA’s president. He has been active in PTDA since 2002, serving as a member of several task forces and 4 committees. Cliff Bannon, Eastern sales manager of Isostatic Industries Inc, will assume duties of PTDA Manufacturer Council chair in 2015. Bannon has served on Council since 2008 and has been an active PTDA member for more than 16 years. Read More

ASTM Standard addresses drying behavior of concrete mixtures.

November 14, 2014

With ASTM C1792 standard, ready-mix concrete producers and engineers will be able to characterize how hardened concrete mixtures dry. Test will provide information on mass loss versus time (drying) behavior of initially saturated concrete specimen exposed to one-dimensional drying in controlled temperature and relative humidity environment. In addition to ready-mix producers, testing laboratories and concrete consultants will find ASTM C1792 helpful. Read More

ASTM Standard helps identify multiple outliers in data set.

ASTM D7915, Practice for Application of Generalized Extreme Studentized Deviate (GESD) Technique to Simultaneously Identify Multiple Outliers in a Data Set, features methodology requiring only approximation of total number of outliers to detect. According to ASTM member Alex Lau, practical applications of this standard include “prescreening of interlaboratory study data, where there is a large volume of raw data to be screened for outliers.” Read More

ATA Sells Truck Fleet Management to Bobit Business Media.

American Trucking Associations (ATA) announced its sale of Truck Fleet Management (TFM) to allied member Bobit Business Media. Terms of this sale were not disclosed. Citing efforts to focus on core businesses as reason behind said sale, ATA Executive VP Jeff Mason said Bobit appears to be a perfect fit for TFM's audiences. Mason also said this move "allows Transport Topics staff to focus on providing industry-leading coverage of the freight transportation industry." Read More

ASTM Proposes Standard on cellular therapy delivery devices.

ASTM WK46706, Guide for Medical Device Compatibility with Delivered Cellular Therapies, will outline parameters to consider when designing benchtop tests to assess potential impact of delivery device on dispensed cellular product. To help eliminate confusion and provide guidance on how to measure effects of devices on delivered cells, proposed standard will be divided into 3 sections: acceptable representative cell type or reporter cell system, cell physiology parameters, and testing.
