AAMA announces certification extension.

March 7, 2013

During 76th Annual Conference, AAMA announced approval of AAMA 106-13, Interim Procedural Guide, which will provide documented, optional process to extend current, unexpired AAMA product certification to any edition of AAMA/WDMA(/CSA) 101/I.S.2(/A440), North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights for period of 2 years for products that have had no changes. During 76th Annual Conference Awards Banquet, AAMA recognized contributions and achievements of its members and congratulated award winners. Award presenters noted the importance of these member contributions as they serve to further the industry as a whole. Recipients included: Pella Corporation; Rod Hershberger of PGT Industries; Scott Condreay of Sapa Extrusions; José Colón of Architectural Testing, Inc.; and Tracy Rogers of Quanex Building Products. ACC's Monthly CAB suggests consumer confidence strengthening.

March 7, 2013

According to American Chemistry Council's (ACC) monthly Chemical Activity Barometer (CAB), U.S. economy continued to show slow expansion by increasing 0.6% over January on 3-month moving average (3MMA) basis. Year over year 3MMA showed 2.9% gain over February 2012, and February was CAB's seventh consecutive monthly gain. ACC's chief economist Dr. Kevin Swift noted, increase in chemical industry activity as "good sign for the overall health of the economy." Read More

ANSI Signs MoU with Ontario for GHG accreditation program.

March 6, 2013

ANSI signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Canadian province of Ontario in connection with Ontario Ministry of Environment’s greenhouse gas (GHG) Emissions Reporting and GHG Verification Program. Through this MoU, Ontario and ANSI agree to cooperate in ANSI accreditation program for GHG validation and/or verification bodies (V/VBs). Program evaluates conformance of V/VBs against ISO International Standard ISO 14065. Read More

Karen McConnell and Linda Woody receive IPC Presidents Award.

Karen McConnell, Northrop Grumman, and Linda Woody, Lockheed Martin, earned IPC Presidents Awards for their contributions to IPC and electronics industry. Karen McConnell is currently a member of IPC Designers Council and serves on IPC’s 2-30 Terms and Definitions Committee as well as 5-21f Ball Grid Array Task Group. Linda Woody has served on 21 IPC committees, chaired 2-18d Printed Board Declaration Task Group, and currently serves as Chair of 2-18e Assembly Technology Declaration Task Group. Read More

Proposed ASTM Concrete Standard will provide resistivity test.

March 6, 2013

ASTM WK37880, Test Method for Measuring the Surface Resistivity of Hardened Concrete Using the Wenner Four-Electrode Method will be used to quantify the resistivity of concreting materials that are widely used for construction around the world. Resistivity is a material property that quantifies degree to which an object prevents passage of electrical current. Intrinsic material property is independent of specimen size, so it is the useful quantity for characterizing concrete mixture. Read More

BIO lauds Senate for passing H.R. 307, the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act (PAHPRA) by unanimous vote. AIA Vows to Fight Sequestration and urges action.

"Despite our extreme disappointment that sequestration was not averted," said AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey, "we are by no means giving up the fight." Continuing Resolution for funding federal agencies through current fiscal year expires March 27, and Blakey identified that as next opportunity for Congress and President Obama to "halt the crisis that our industry has highlighted for nearly two years." Chip Yost, NAM Assistant VP of Energy and Resources Policy, released statement urging approval of Keystone XL pipeline after State Department issued draft Environment Impact Statement. According to Yost, release of draft EIS is a step in the right direction toward final approval of this important project. IR Digital Holography lets firefighters see through flames.

March 5, 2013

A team of Italian researchers has developed an imaging technique that uses infrared digital holography to peer through chaotic conflagrations and capture potentially lifesaving and otherwise hidden details. By employing specialized lens-free technique, researchers created system that can cope with flood of radiation from environments filled with flames as well as smoke. Team describes its breakthrough results and their applications in paper published in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express. Read More

ASTM Proposes Standard to evaluate wet road skid resistance.

March 5, 2013

Proposed standard ASTM WK40015, Test Method for Determining the Skid Resistance of a Pavement Surface by Measuring the Sideway Force Coefficient (SFCS) Using SCRIM, is based on test used by highway authorities in United Kingdom and other parts of the world since 1970s. Test described in said standard will be used primarily by highway authorities to evaluate wet road skidding resistance as means of reducing automobile accidents. Read More

Proposed Standard to cover advances for asphalt adhesives.

ASTM WK40056, Specification for Adhesive Used with Modified Bituminous Sheet Materials, is being developed by Subcommittee D08.20 on Roofing Membrane Systems, part of ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing. Proposed standard will provide means of describing changes that have been made in formulation and performance of asphalt adhesives currently available. It will also provide a tool for purchasing latest asphalt adhesives for use with modified bitumen roof membranes. Read More

Developing Textile Wear Test Standard is open to contributions.

Interested parties are invited to join ongoing development of ASTM International standard ASTM D3181, which provides data that helps predict expected wear performance of various textiles in end-use conditions. Content includes statistical methods for test design and analysis of data as well as standard procedures for evaluation of textiles.
