AMT announces dates for Smartforce Student Summit.

SPI appoints sales agent for NPE2015 in Latin America.

SPI has appointed Montesino Technologies, Inc. as the sales agent for NPE2015 throughout Latin America. Produced by SPI, NPE2015 will take place on March 23–27, 2015 in Orlando, FL. Montesino is responsible for sales of exhibit space to Latin American companies and for supporting SPI’s program to attract more visitors from the region than for the previous NPE in 2012, which had record-breaking attendance by Latin Americans. ASTM approves airborne nanoparticle measurement standard.

During manufacture of some products, there is potential for nanomaterials to become airborne, resulting in inhalation exposure to workers and consumers. ASTM E2864, Test Method for Measurement of Airborne Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticle Surface Area Concentration in Inhalation Exposure Chambers Using Krypton Gas Adsorption, provides clear steps to collect airborne nanomaterials and analyze them to determine their surface area, promoting safe development and use of nanomaterials. EPA seeks Environmental Education Grant applications.

EPA is accepting applications for environmental education projects under agency's Environmental Education Grant Program. This program works to engage communities through variety of educational projects that have a lasting impact on people's health by facilitating environmental stewardship. Projects have engaged students in stream monitoring, created sustainable mentoring communities, and provided professional development to teachers on STEM subjects. Read More

Fuel Economy of New Vehicles sets record high.

December 19, 2013

According to EPA's annual report that tracks average fuel economy of vehicles sold in the U.S., model year 2012 vehicles achieved all-time high fuel economy of 23.6 mpg, representing 1.2 mpg increase over previous year. Fuel economy has now increased in 7 of last 8 years. While EPA does not yet have final data for 2013, preliminary projections are that fuel economy will rise by 0.4 mpg, and carbon dioxide emissions will decrease by 6 grams/mile. Read More

ASTM Sensory Evaluation Committee invites active participation.

Participation in encouraged for all parties interested in standards developing activities of Subcommittee E18.05 on Sensory Applications--General, which is responsible for sensory evaluation standard ASTM E1958, Guide for Sensory Claim Substantiation. Topics currently under discussion for future revisions include moving from regional to representative sampling as well as inclusion of new section on documentation in case of legal challenge. BIO Expresses Gratitude for hearing on RFS.

BIO thanked Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works for holding hearing on Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and EPA's proposed rule for 2014. BIO's Brent Erickson called attention to advanced biofuel companies' "billions of dollars" of investments in building industry from ground up and noted how EPA's proposed rule will strand those investments, inhibit further investment/development, and threaten existing and future jobs as well as efforts to commercialize other biotech R&D.
