BIO and advanced biofuel members will seek to correct flaws in proposed rule on 2014 volume obligations for Renewable Fuel Standard. In his statement, BIO's Brent Erickson said rule "turns the logic of the RFS on its head" and could "significantly chill" advanced biofuels project investments. ASTM E2899, Test Method for Measurement of Initiation Toughness in Surface Cracks under Tension and Bending, will enable fracture toughness testing on defects that are directly analogous to those commonly found in structural applications. Standard will be used by entities required to address defect tolerance of safety-critical structures, including petroleum plants and pipelines, nuclear reactors, aircraft, and spacecraft.
Scheduled for Jan 28, ASTM's workshop on Site Characterization and Monitoring Related to Hydraulic Fracturing Activities will focus on technologies and best practices for conducting site characterizations and monitoring impacts of site activities. Workshop will discuss case studies related to topics such as sampling and analysis of residential/commercial water supply wells; stray gas investigations; measuring atmospheric parameters effecting air quality; and surface/subsurface soil sampling.
