ASABE Revises animal-drawn equipment lighting/marking standard.

January 9, 2013

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) revised ANSI/ASAE EP576.2, Lighting and Marking of Animal-Drawn Equipment, so that its scope includes specifications for pony carts; previous version contained recommendations only for animal-drawn wagons and buggies. Safety professionals, working with Amish advisory committees in several U.S. states, identified need to address use of low-profile pony carts that are commonly operated by children. Read More

The Consumer Electronics Show will be kicking off in Las Vegas and NAM is at the convention center talking with member companies and policy makers. EPA Announces CAA Settlement with Wisconsin utility.

January 8, 2013

According to settlement announced by U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice, Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) will invest ~$300 million in pollution control technology, pay $1.2 million civil penalty, and spend $6 million on environmental mitigation projects to resolve Clean Air Act (CAA) violations. Settlement requires 2 power plants – Pulliam plant in Green Bay, WI and Weston plant in Rothschild, WI – to comply with emission rates and annual tonnage limitations. Read More

EPA releases first set of chemical draft risk assessments.

January 8, 2013

EPA released for public comment draft risk assessments, for particular uses, on 5 chemicals found in common household products, which may impact people’s health and the environment. Developed as part of agency’s Toxic Substances Control Act Work Plan, draft risk assessments address DCM and NMP in paint stripper products, TCE as a degreaser and spray-on protective coating, ATO as a synergist in halogenated flame retardants, and HHCB as fragrance ingredient in commercial and consumer products. NREL to help convert methane to liquid diesel.

January 8, 2013

NREL will help develop microbes that convert methane found in natural gas into liquid diesel fuel, which could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower dependence on foreign oil. Every molecule of methane vented to atmosphere has global-warming capacity of 12 molecules of carbon dioxide. Consortium of scientists says that if wasted gas can be turned into liquid, it can be piped to refineries where it can be turned into diesel suitable for trucks and cars, or even jet fuel for use in planes. USA Construction Industry adds 30,000 jobs in December.

January 8, 2013

According to January 4 employment report by U.S. Labor Department, U.S. construction, nonresidential building construction, residential building, and residential specialty trade contractor sectors all added jobs since December 2011. Heavy and civil engineering construction sector lost 700 jobs for month but added 400 jobs during 2011. Across all industries, USA added 155,000 jobs; private sector expanded by 168,000 jobs, and public sector shrunk by 13,000 jobs. Read More

Award-Winning PV Cell pushes efficiency higher.

January 7, 2013

Scientists in the III-V Multijunction Photovoltaics Group at NREL and its industry partner, Solar Junction, won R&D 100 award from R&D Magazine for world-record multijunction solar cell. This 3-layered cell, SJ3, converted 43.5% of energy in sunlight into electrical energy — a rate that has stimulated demand for cell to be used in CPV arrays for utility-scale energy production. Recently, that record of 43.5% efficiency at 415 suns was eclipsed with 44% efficiency at 947 suns. Read More

NAM Comments on December Employment Report.

January 7, 2013

In his post regarding December Employment Report by Bureau of Labor Statistics, NAM Chief Economist Chad Moutray noted that manufacturing sector added 25,000 net new workers – strongest monthly gain since March. This contrasts recently released ADP figures, which found 6 straight months of declining manufacturing employment. During 2012, manufacturers hired additional 180,000 workers on net, or 10% of all nonfarm payroll jobs created this year, and this growth was slower than hoped. AIA Calls for Permanent, Bipartisan Solution to sequestration.

In her statement regarding failure to fix sequestration in fiscal cliff deal, AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey said "More than 2 million Americans across all sectors of the economy will lose their jobs starting in 57 days if our political leaders fail to fix the self-inflicted wound of sequestration."
