Hydraulic Institute announces 2012 Standards VIPs.

During 2013 Annual Meeting, Hydraulic Institute announced 2012 Standards VIP recipients. VIP program recognizes individual HI members who go above and beyond in their contribution to development of ANSI/HI Pump Standards, guidelines, and education/training programs. New Standards VIPs as well as those who achieved the next milestone level of VIP service were honored. Honorary pins are distributed for first year of VIP service and every fifth anniversary thereafter. Read More

Updated Standard covers retrofit window installation.

AAMA 2410-13, Standard Practice for Installation of Windows with an Exterior Flush Fin Over an Existing Window Frame covers installation of retrofit windows in detached 1- and 2-family dwellings and townhouses not more than 3 stories above-grade in height. Standard includes updated definition of residential dwellings as defined in AAMA 2400-10 and current building codes. Details were also added for proper shimming and sealing of replacement window to existing window frame. Read More

EPA announces membership of Great Lakes Advisory Board.

U.S. EPA announced, on behalf of 16 federal agencies, the membership of the first advisory board to support implementation of Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Board will provide advice and recommendations to EPA Administrator, who serves as chair of federal Interagency Task Force. EPA considered candidates from broad range of interests including business, agriculture, foundations, environmental justice groups, youth organizations, academia, and state, local and tribal representatives. ISPE Drug Shortage Survey due by March 20.

ISPE announced that the deadline is approaching for pharmaceutical professionals and companies to participate in Society’s global survey on drug shortages. ISPE launched Drug Shortage Initiative in support of the pharmaceutical industry and global health authorities’ efforts to understand and address the complex and critical issue of drug shortages. Survey is designed to collect data on technical, scientific, manufacturing, quality, and compliance issues that may have resulted in drug shortages. Read More

Congressman Neal Honored as BIO Legislator of the Year.

BIO announced Congressman Richard Neal (D-MA) as Legislator of the Year for 2012–2013. BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood praised Neal's sponsorship of High Technology Small Business Research Incentives Act for helping emerging companies find new sources of investment and also praised Congressman Neal's joint work on legislation to address Vaccine Excise Tax. NAM Board Member named to U.S. Manufacturing Council.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after NAM Board member and Kennametal Inc. chairman, president, and CEO Carlos Cardoso was appointed to serve on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s U.S. Manufacturing Council. Timmons called Carlos Cardoso "a leader in the drive for pro-growth manufacturing policies" and said he "will be an excellent addition to the U.S. Manufacturing Council," citing his experience as executive as well as his qualities as innovator and a problem solver. Proposed ASTM Standard to measure properties of SRFRs.

Proposed standard, ASTM WK39691, is being developed to measure basic physical properties of sediment retention fiber rolls, known as SRFRs, which are used to inhibit migration of sediment that has been displaced and carried by flowing water. Once it has been approved, proposed standard will be used by manufacturers to perform and document quality control in manufacturing process, as well as by end users who will rely on test results to assess specification conformance. Proposed ASTM Standard covers ready-mixed concrete return.

Proposed standard ASTM WK39876, Specification for Returned Fresh Concrete for Use in a New Batch of Ready-Mixed Concrete, will cover process, verification, and record keeping procedures for recycling returned fresh concrete. In development by Subcommittee C09.40 on Ready-Mixed Concrete, this standard will ensure returned fresh concrete mixed with new concrete has known and verifiable characteristics. It will also help manufacturers reduce waste material and disposal requirements. EPA Announces Cities with most Energy Star buildings in USA.

EPA released list of U.S. metropolitan areas with most Energy Star® certified buildings in 2012. "“Through their partnership with EPA, the owners and managers of Energy Star certified buildings are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions while saving on utility bills," said EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe. NEMA Reactivates Standard for polyphase induction motors.

NEMA reactivated and published ANSI/NEMA C50.41 American National Standard Polyphase Induction Motors for Power Generating Stations. Standard applies requirements to polyphase induction motors intended for use in various power generating stations, including those with horizontal or vertical construction and frame size larger than NEMA 440 series as well as squirrel-cage, single speed or multispeed, and form wound types.
