BIO Applauds MLP Parity Act and thanks House, Senate sponsors.

According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, Master Limited Partnership (MLP) Parity Act "will level the playing field between renewable fuels and fossil fuels in tax policy that shapes private investment decisions." Greenwood went on to commend inclusion of renewable chemicals, "for the first time establishing tax parity for this growing sector," and commented how this legislation will help drive employment and economic growth while reducing foreign oil dependence. NEMA Supports Reintroduction of energy efficiency bill.

At an event on Capitol Hill, NEMA joined national businesses and labor and environmental organizations in welcoming reintroduction of Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2013. NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis congratulated Senators Shaheen and Portman "for continuing this vital bipartisan effort" and said this proposal's significance could not be underestimated as it tackles market barriers to energy efficiency investment. Cement Manufacturer agrees to reduce harmful air emissions.

May 1, 2013

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced that CEMEX, Inc., owner and operator of a Portland cement manufacturing facility in Lyons, CO, has agreed to operate advanced pollution controls on its kiln and pay $1 million civil penalty to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. Complaint filed against CEMEX alleged that between 1997–2000, company unlawfully made modifications at its plant that resulted in significant net increases of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. Upon wrapping up in Chicago, IL, 2013 BIO International Convention drew 13,594 industry leaders from 47 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and 62 countries. Global event for biotechnology, hosted by BIO, held record number of partnering meetings and panel sessions on latest science, policy issues, and business opportunities and challenges facing biotechnology industry. Forensic Standard to address digital and multimedia evidence.

ASTM WK27106, Terminology for Digital and Multimedia Evidence Examination, will provide framework for the general public to understand terminology used by forensic professionals. Proposed standard is a compilation of terms and definitions from areas of computer forensics, image analysis, video analysis, forensic audio, and facial identification. Standard covers PEX hydronic heating/cooling tubing systems.

ASTM Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems is developing proposed standard ASTM WK38788, Specification for Crosslinked Polyethylene OD Controlled Tubing for Hydronic Heating/Cooling Systems. Key focus will be to establish testing and performance requirements for limiting oxygen permeation into hydronic fluid, which if left unchecked can lead to rapid corrosion of ferrous components within system. Some applications include radiant floor heating/cooling, snow melting, and solar heating. Read More

U.S. DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has been recognized by Denver Post as "2013 Top Work Place." Survey was taken voluntarily by 75% of laboratory's staff, according to NREL Director Dan Arvizu. It covered organizational health, job satisfaction, and engagement with questions on NREL's strategic direction, leadership, values, execution, and individual job satisfaction. SME Board Member appointed to 2013 Manufacturing Council.

SME announced that board member Susan Smyth, PhD, was appointed to the 2013 Manufacturing Council, which is a private sector committee that advises the Secretary of Commerce on U.S. manufacturing sector. EPA updates list of organizations using renewable energy.

U.S. EPA's Green Power Partnership released updated list of Top 50 organizations using electricity from clean, renewable sources. Intel Corporation, Microsoft, and Apple, Inc. rank in top 10. Agency also released list of 47 partners committed to purchasing green power for 5 yr or more, including 15 higher education institutions. Also, EPA held College and University Green Power Challenge for 7th year, with University of Pennsylvania in lead. Read More

Seattle and King County, WA will upgrade stormwater systems.

Under settlements with Department of Justice and U.S EPA, King County and city of Seattle agreed to invest in upgrades to local sewage and combined stormwater collection, piping, and treatment. Both agreements allow integrated planning approach, encouraging communities to set their own clean water project priorities and invest in fixing most pressing problems first. Also, settlements require development and implementation of joint plan to improve system-wide operations and maintenance. Read More

April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows dip in manufacturing.

PMA's April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows 16% of 136 participating metalforming companies expect decline in economic activity over next 3 months. Also, 21% of participants predict decrease in orders, while 22% reported decreased average daily shipping levels in April; 44% said shipping was same as 3 months ago. Up from March 2013 and April 2012, 14% of companies reported employees on short time or layoff. Read More

ASTM Standard addresses airsoft protective eyewear.

In response to requests from both insurance providers and playing facility operators, ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities is developing ASTM WK27246, Specification for Eye Protective Devices for Airsoft Sports. Proposed standard will provide eyewear test procedures that are specifically designed for airsoft. Devices tested to ASTM WK27246 will meet specific requirements for optical performance and impact protection based on needs of activity and participant. Read More
