ASTM NDT Committee honors Robert Hardison for achievements.

Recognizing years of service and dedication toward developing international standards for nondestructive testing industry, ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing honored Robert Hardison with Lifetime Achievement Award. Hardison, ASTM member since 1967, led E07 as chairman for two consecutive terms, initiated establishment of Subcommittee E07.95 on Long-Range Planning, and served terms on ASTM board of directors and Standing Committee on Technical Committee Operations. Hand-Held Device catches early signs of retinal disease.

Scanning patient's entire retina in seconds, hand-held optical device could aid primary care physicians in early detection of retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Device combines ultrahigh-speed 3-D imaging, tiny MEMS mirror for scanning, and technique to correct for unintentional movement by patient. Researchers at MIT describe their ophthalmic-screening instrument in paper published in The Optical Society's Biomedical Optics Express journal. Read More

Rick Barnard has been recognized with Lyman Award.

Rick Barnard, a founder of Defense News, Space News, and Civil Aviation News and founding editor of Defense News, received 2013 Lauren D. Lyman Award for outstanding achievement in aerospace communications. Acknowledged as expert on defense and federal management, Barnard's journalism career spanned 30 years. Under his direction, Defense News twice received Gerald R. Ford Foundation award. Barnard has also received National Press Club award for excellence in consumer reporting. Read More

Congressman Schneider holds town meeting at IPC headquarters.

With a background in engineering, Representative Brad Schneider (IL-10) held a town hall meeting at IPC headquarters to hear about issues that concerned IPC employees and to answer their questions. Congressman addressed topics ranging from education to conflict minerals to jobs and the economy. On a question about the negative trend in manufacturing in the U.S., Schneider believes growth is possible, by investing in the infrastructure with a focus on science and technology. Read More

NEMA supports energy efficiency incentives in tax reform.

Commenting on Senate Finance Committee Chairman Baucus’ energy tax reform proposals, NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis stated that measures to incentivize energy efficiency—which regrettably are not included in current draft—are vital components of any plan to cut emissions and increase energy security. U.S. wastes more energy than it consumes, which is why NEMA has proposed a technology-neutral package of tax incentives for energy efficiency in buildings, factories, and the electric grid. Through alliance, CSA Group and Korea Institute of Medical Device Assessment can further expand one-stop medical device testing and certification services for localized manufacturers. KIMDA will test medical products to applicable U.S. and Canadian standards to support growing demand of Korean medical products in North American markets.
