Industry Associations honor NREL employees.

NREL Engineer Ian Metzger has been named by ASHRAE as its New Face of Engineering. Program promotes accomplishments of young engineers by highlighting their engineering contributions and resulting impact on public welfare. NREL's net-zero, 360,000 sq ft., Research Support Facility in Golden, CO, also was also honored by ASHRAE. NREL Research Fellow David Ginley received Materials Research Society's Woody Award, which recognizes volunteer who has made extraordinary contributions to Society. Read More

NREL's Economic Benefit to Colorado totals $814.8 million.

March 4, 2013

According to study by University of Colorado's Leeds School of Business, net economic benefit of NREL to Colorado's economy was $814.8 million in fiscal year 2012. Jefferson County, where NREL's main campus is located and where half of NREL's employees live, enjoyed greatest economic impact, with $274.6 million. Although NREL's economic impact in Colorado fell 2.4% from FY 2011, it is still 38.5% higher than $588.3 million impact in FY 2009. Laboratory supported approximately 2,300 jobs in 2012. Read More

Peter Chiang joins IPC as new vice president of IPC China.

Within his role of vice president of IPC China, Peter Chiang will work in conjunction with IPC China President Phil Carmichael to lead the organization’s China operations and staff. As chief representative for Taiwan, he will also be responsible for providing standards development activity support, raising awareness of IPC and its programs, making company visits, and establishing relationships with prospective distributors in the region. At hearing entitled "American Energy Security and Innovation: An Assessment of Private-Sector Successes and Opportunities in Energy Efficient Technologies," the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power heard about successes and challenges in making industrial sector more energy efficient. MCA Announces Members of 2013 Board of Directors.

Motion Control Association (MCA) announced its 2013 Board of Directors on February 21 during MCA Business Conference in Orlando, FL. John Hegel was named Chairman of the Board, and Bill Steury will serve as Vice-Chairman of MCA. Hegel, Steury, and Allai are joined on board by director Ray Butler, Vice President and General Manager, Kollmorgen. Construction Materials Prices see increase in January 2013.

March 1, 2013

National construction material prices increased 0.7% in January, with year-over-year prices rising 1.3%, while nonresidential construction materials prices were up 0.6% for month and 0.8% during last 12 months. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, this data "indicates that ABC’s prediction of increased volatility in 2013 after a period of unusually stable prices in 2012 is proving to be correct." Basu also predicted continued volatility for materials prices in 2013. Read More

Committee approves last standard in military sampling series.

March 1, 2013

ASTM International Committee E11 on Quality and Statistics has approved the last in a series of ASTM standards that preserve military sampling standards that were originally under jurisdiction of U.S. DOD. ASTM E2910, Guide for Preferred Methods for Acceptance of Product, preserves MIL-STD-1916 in its original form. Purpose of standard is to encourage producers supplying goods and services to submit efficient and effective process control procedures in place of prescribed sampling requirements. Read More

EPA calls for Green Chemistry Challenge Award nominations.

EPA announced nominations for 2013 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for companies and institutions that can design chemicals or new products that help protect public health and the environment. Nominations for innovative technologies that feature design of greener chemicals, greener chemical synthesis, or greener chemical reactions are due by April 30. EPA is particularly interested in approaches or technologies that reduce or eliminate need for brominated flame retardant chemicals. Read More

An American National Standard from Consumer Electronic Association, CEA 708.1-2012, Digital TV Closed Captioning: 3D Extensions, specifies signaling to allow CEA-708 caption services to be rendered with stereoscopic program content. To ensure filtration process is effective and results in safe drinking water, American Water Works Association released AWWA B101-2012, Precoat Filter Media. Study Finds Carbon Tax would hurt manufacturing growth.

Released by NAM and conducted by NERA Economic Consulting, Economic Outcomes of a U.S. Carbon Tax finds that levying carbon tax would impact millions of jobs and result in higher prices for natural gas, electricity, gasoline, and other energy commodities. Report says manufacturing output in energy-intensive sectors could drop by as much as 15.0%. During luncheon held in conjunction with IPC APEX EXPO®, IPC presented IPC Peter Sarmanian Corporate Recognition Award to Lockheed Martin and IPC Stan Plzak Corporate Recognition Award to Intel Corporation. Both awards honor contributions to the industry and support of IPC through participation in technical and/or management programs. As one of the longest standing IPC members, Lockheed Martin celebrated its 50th anniversary with IPC in 2009, and Intel Corporation has been a member since 1980. Read More

ASABE Completes Revision of front-mounted PTO standard.

ASABE has completed revision to previously adopted ISO standard ISO 8759-1:1998. Revision, ANSI/ASABE AD8759-1:1998 JAN2013, Agricultural wheel tractors – Front-mounted equipment – Part 1: Power take-off and three-point linkage, features standardized Type 1 PTOs with 35 mm dia, 540 rpm, and anti-clockwise rotation as viewed from front of tractor. Other changes include specifying same anti-clockwise rotation for Type 2 and Type 3 PTOs. Read More

BIO welcomes EPA final rule on new cellulosic biofuels.

February 28, 2013

U.S. EPA issued approval for new feedstocks and biofuel processes under Renewable Fuel Standard. First proposed in January 2012, rule clears path for advanced and cellulosic biofuels from camelina and energy cane, as well as renewable gasoline from previously approved biomass sources, to contribute to U.S. energy security and GHG reductions. With approval of energy cane and renewable gasoline, there are now 5 pathways for producing cellulosic biofuels that meet RFS volume requirements. Read More
