Fur and Feathers keep animals warm by scattering light.

In work that has major implications for improving performance of building insulation, scientists at the University of Namur in Belgium and the University of Hassan I in Morocco have calculated that hairs that reflect IR light may contribute insulating power to exceptionally warm winter coats of polar bears and other animals. Paper titled "Radiative contribution to the thermal conductance in animal furs and other wooly insulators," was published in OSA's Optics Express open-access journal. Read More

Election Results Announced for 2014 RIA Board of Directors.

As announced during Robotics Industry Forum in Orlando, FL, 2014 RIA Board of Directors election results include Stu Shepherd as new chairperson. He is joined on RIA Executive Committee by Catherine Morris, Joe Gemma, Mike Jacobs, Curtis Richardson, and Jeff Burnstein. Brian Behm is joining for his first 2-year term, while John Bubnikovich, Mick Estes, and Kirk Goins have been re-elected to new 2-year terms. Additionally, there are 11 members who will remain with Board for 2014. Read More

As announced during AIA Business Conference in Orlando, FL, 2014 AIA Board of Directors election results included Components Express, Inc. Vice President Steve Mott as new chairperson. Board members elected to new 2-year terms include George Chamberlain of Pleora Technologies, Marc Marini of National Instruments, John Merva of Gardasoft Vision, and Steve Wardell of ATS Imaging. ASTM Committee honors Randy Stebbins.

ASTM Committee D27 on Electrical Insulating Liquids and Gases has honored Randy Stebbins, technical director at S.D. Myers Inc., with the Charles A. Johnson Award for his contributions to standards development. Prior to joining S.D. Myers, Stebbins held sales and marketing roles at Akzo Chemie America, Sun Environmental Corp, and Volz Environmental Services Inc. As technical director, he provides training in transformer and load tap changer testing and maintenance, among other responsibilities. Read More

NREL Study addresses active power control of wind turbines.

NREL, along with partners from Electric Power Research Institute and University of Colorado have completed comprehensive study titled "Active Power Controls from Wind Power: Bridging the Gaps." Study found that wind power can support power system by adjusting its power output to enhance system reliability. Active power control helps balance load with generation at various times, avoiding erroneous power flows, involuntary load shedding, machine damage, and risk of potential blackouts. Read More

Study Indicates Global EMS/ODM Market will resume growth in 2014.

Survey-based study by IPC, 2012–2013 Analysis & Forecast for the Global EMS Industry, includes projections that electronics manufacturing services (EMS) and original design manufacturers (ODM) markets will resume growth in 2014 after decline of ~4.9% in 2013. Another prediction is that gap between EMS/ODM growth rates and those of OEMs will narrow over next 4 years as OEM electronics outsourcing slows.
