Green Seal(TM) answers questions regarding GS-51 Standard.

Some institutional purchasers have contacted Green Seal regarding its recently published GS-51 "Standard for Laundry Care Products for Industrial and Institutional Use." GS-51 certification applies to prewash products, detergents, spot/stain removers, bleaches, and antimicrobial pesticide products. It does not apply to household laundry care products. Each product that earns GS-51 certification must deliver satisfactory performance and meet comparable benchmarks for that product category. Read More

NREL Cooperative to make jet fuel from switchgrass.

As one of 4 biorefinery projects funded recently by Energy Department, NREL is partnering with Cobalt Technologies, U.S. Navy, and Show Me Energy Cooperative to demonstrate that jet fuel can be made economically and in large quantities from renewable biomass feedstock such as switchgrass. Results will help determine whether process is ready for commercial scale. If so, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Defense are poised to help private firms build requisite biorefineries. Read More

Scheduled for Oct 19-22, ATA's annual Management Conference and Exhibition will begin with golf tournament to benefit ATA Insurance Task Force. First full day features "All Eyes on the Economy" luncheon and general session and opening of ATA Exhibit Hall, where attendees can review advances in truck safety, sustainability, and productivity. HDI announced successful wrap-up of the 23rd HDI Annual Conference & Expo, which targeted the technical service and support industry and attracted more than 2,300 attendees from all over the world. HDI's award lineup included HDI Analyst of the Year and Manager of the Year Awards; HDI Team Excellence Awards; and HDI Desktop Support Technician of the Year Award. Major Revisions Made to Resin Identification Code standard.

Enhancements have been approved for ASTM D7611, Standard Practice for Coding Plastic Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification, which was first issued in 2010 and covers Resin Identification Code (RIC) system. Revisions modernize RIC system, promoting effective utilization across stakeholder community while addressing recent innovations in polymer applications and multi-layer materials. ASTM Standard provides identification methods for phthalates.

Section 108 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 prohibits certain products from containing 6 specified phthalates. ASTM D7823, Test Method for Determination of Low Level, Regulated Phthalates in Poly (Vinyl Chloride) Plastics by Thermal Desorption — Gas Chromatography/Mass Chromatography, provides a method for the identification and qualification of these phthalates and will be used by analytical laboratories, regulatory bodies, and manufacturers. AMT Comments on successful test/demonstration of MTConnect.

MTConnect®, open-source standard for collecting and communicating real-time information from manufacturing processes and factory floor equipment, has been successfully demonstrated and tested by manufacturing researchers at NIST. AMT President Douglas Woods called this "a giant step forward in resolving manufacturing interoperability issues." NREL highlights 2012 utility green power leaders.

NREL released its assessment of leading utility green power programs. Under these voluntary programs, residential/commercial consumers can support additional electricity production from renewable resources, such as wind and solar. Ranked by renewable energy sales, Portland General Electric overtook Austin Energy in 2012, selling largest amount of renewable energy in nation. Green power sales of top 10 utility programs by sales exceeded 4.2 million MWh in 2012, up from 3.9 million MWh in 2010. Read More

Proposed Concrete Standard characterizes drying behavior.

Developed by Subcommittee C09.66 on Concrete’s Resistance to Fluid Penetration, part of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, ASTM WK37029 will be used by ready-mix concrete producers to characterize drying behavior of new and existing concrete mixture proportions. Purpose of standard is to provide information on mass loss versus time (drying) behavior of initially saturated concrete specimen exposed to 1-dimensional drying in controlled temperature and relative humidity environment. Manufacturing Technology Orders level off for April.

According to data reported by companies participating in USMTO program, April U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders totaled $372.50 million, which was down 26.6% from March and down 12.6% when compared with $426.44 million reported for April 2012. With year-to-date total of $1,650.91 million, 2013 is down 7.0% compared with 2012. Likewise, Purchasing Manager’s Index dropped below 50 – indicating contraction within manufacturing – but hiring continued to expand throughout the industry. Read More

BIO supports biosimilars legislation.

BIO and the Delaware BioScience Association commend Delaware State Senate for introducing legislation designed to address regulatory issues related to the interchangeability of biological medicines. Biosimilars are not generics, and even slight changes to biologic drug can change its properties entirely. Senate Bill 118 seeks to properly preserve physician-patient relationship, protect patient access to accurate prescription information, and promote competitive market for biologic therapies. Legislation Creates Pathway for substitution of biologic drugs.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber was commended by BIO and Oregon Bioscience Association (Oregon Bio) for signing legislation designed to address regulatory issues related to biological medicine interchangeability. Policies outlined in House Bill 2705 and Senate Bill 460 align with all 5 of BIO's principles on biologic substitution. Furthermore, BIO and Oregon Bio commended actions of the Oregon Legislative Assembly for unanimously passing these bills. Read More

EPA Awards $4.3+ Million for climate and air quality research.

U.S. EPA announced over $4.3 million in grants to 13 institutions to study and improve understanding of how certain organic compounds form in atmosphere. Research performed by grantees will help federal government improve its air quality management systems and climate change models with respect to organic aerosol formation. Efforts will also help EPA continue its work of protecting people’s health and environment. EPA is also contributing staff scientists to work as part of this effort. Read More

U.S. EPA and National Institute of Health announced winner of My Air, My Health Challenge, which called upon innovators nationwide to design small, low-cost sensor that integrates air quality measurements with related health data, such as heart rate and breathing. Judges selected team of David Kuller, Gabrielle Savage Dockterman, and Dot Kelly for developing Conscious Clothing, a wearable, real-time breathing analysis tool that calculates amount of polluted air a person inhales. BIO submitted written testimony to House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Energy hearing, "Up Against the Blend Wall: Examining EPA's Role in the Renewable Fuel Standard." Citing "research and development of new energy crops and in commercializing innovative new fuel technologies," BIO's Brent Erickson said RFS "is working as intended." He also said future investment depends on assurance of stable federal policy and promotion of competition in U.S. fuel market.
