NACD Opposes IST in joint industry letter to White House.

In their letter to President Obama and Interagency Working Group (IWG) on Improving Chemical Facility Safety and Security, NACD and 12 other associations commended IWG for its work but took exception to portion of recent report regarding Inherently Safer Technologies (IST). "To attempt to overlay an IST requirement would negatively impact all of these various safety and security programs and create an impossible bureaucratic burden," stated the Associations. Election Results Announced for 2014 RIA Board of Directors.

As announced during Robotics Industry Forum in Orlando, FL, 2014 RIA Board of Directors election results include Stu Shepherd as new chairperson. He is joined on RIA Executive Committee by Catherine Morris, Joe Gemma, Mike Jacobs, Curtis Richardson, and Jeff Burnstein. Brian Behm is joining for his first 2-year term, while John Bubnikovich, Mick Estes, and Kirk Goins have been re-elected to new 2-year terms. Fur and Feathers keep animals warm by scattering light.

In work that has major implications for improving performance of building insulation, scientists at the University of Namur in Belgium and the University of Hassan I in Morocco have calculated that hairs that reflect IR light may contribute insulating power to exceptionally warm winter coats of polar bears and other animals. Paper titled "Radiative contribution to the thermal conductance in animal furs and other wooly insulators," was published in OSA's Optics Express open-access journal. Read More

ASTM Committee D27 on Electrical Insulating Liquids and Gases has honored Randy Stebbins, technical director at S.D. Myers Inc., with the Charles A. Johnson Award for his contributions to standards development. Prior to joining S.D. Myers, Stebbins held sales and marketing roles at Akzo Chemie America, Sun Environmental Corp, and Volz Environmental Services Inc. NREL Study addresses active power control of wind turbines.

NREL, along with partners from Electric Power Research Institute and University of Colorado have completed comprehensive study titled "Active Power Controls from Wind Power: Bridging the Gaps." Study found that wind power can support power system by adjusting its power output to enhance system reliability. Active power control helps balance load with generation at various times, avoiding erroneous power flows, involuntary load shedding, machine damage, and risk of potential blackouts. Read More

ASTM has released Manual 32, Test Sieving Methods: Guidelines for Establishing Sieve Analysis Procedures, 5th Edition. Book is intended as a supplement to several ASTM standards related to sieve analysis of materials, including ASTM E11, Specification for Woven Wire Test Sieve Cloth and Test Sieves. It includes updates to terminology; new technology developments in sieves, sieve shakers, and procedures; and updated tables and figures that correlate with latest ASTM standards. ASTM Standard addresses airborne ultrasound packaging tests.

Airborne ultrasound is one of the few solutions that nondestructively measures physical integrity and quality of flexible packaging seals.
