April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows dip in manufacturing.

PMA's April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows 16% of 136 participating metalforming companies expect decline in economic activity over next 3 months. Also, 21% of participants predict decrease in orders, while 22% reported decreased average daily shipping levels in April; 44% said shipping was same as 3 months ago. Up from March 2013 and April 2012, 14% of companies reported employees on short time or layoff. Read More

ASTM Standard addresses airsoft protective eyewear.

In response to requests from both insurance providers and playing facility operators, ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities is developing ASTM WK27246, Specification for Eye Protective Devices for Airsoft Sports. Proposed standard will provide eyewear test procedures that are specifically designed for airsoft. Devices tested to ASTM WK27246 will meet specific requirements for optical performance and impact protection based on needs of activity and participant. Read More

MESA Global Education Program extends its depth and reach.

Offered in classroom and online settings, B2MML and Integration Fundamentals program will detail fundamentals in plant-to-enterprise integration as well as fundamentals and methodologies of using MESA B2MML and ISA-95 standard. IACET-accredited program offers MESA Certificate of Competency (CoC) for successful completion. NREL Survey shows improvement in B100 biodiesel quality.

April 29, 2013

According to NREL's latest national survey of 100% biodiesel (B100) "blend stock" samples, 95% of samples from 2011-12 met ASTM International fuel quality specifications which serve as guidelines for the industry. NREL researchers collected fuel samples from 53 producers and 14 terminals across the U.S. Samples were tested for range of critical properties, such as free and total glycerin content, metals content, and cloud point that could have immediate impact on operability. EPA publishes 18th annual U.S. greenhouse gas inventory.

According to EPA's 18th annual report of overall U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, there was a 1.6% decrease in emissions in 2011 from the previous year and a 6.9% drop below 2005 levels. Recent trends can be attributed to multiple factors including reduced emissions from electricity generation, improvements in fuel efficiency in vehicles with reductions in miles traveled, and year-to-year changes in prevailing weather. AASHTO President testifies on status of MAP-21 implementation.

AASHTO President Mike Lewis, Director of the RI DOT, testified before Highways and Transit Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, urging Congress to allow implementation of "transformative policy and program reforms" included in MAP-21 to take place before contemplating major changes. Reforms are designed to accelerate project delivery, improve efficiency through performance measurement and transparency, and systematically address freight transportation needs. International Standards Projects reflect continued growth.

According to ASABE's Scott Cedarquist work on international standards for solid biofuels continues to expand, spurred on by needs of expanding industry. Technical Committee 238 (TC238), organized in 2007 by ISO to develop standards for solid biofuels, saw increased international participation at recent meeting, at which existing regional QA protocols were deemed adequate and group discussed new projects for thermally treated solid biofuels and safe handling of pelletized biofuels. NREL made 3 key hires to lead research centers: 9-year NREL veteran Tom Foust as National Bioenergy Center Director, David Post as Center Director for Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), and Rich Greene as Biosciences Center Director. While Post comes to NREL with almost 40 years of experience in nuclear and chemical facilities engineering, design, construction, startup, operation, and maintenance, Greene joins NREL after 30 years of service to federal government.
