SME launches Medical Manufacturing Innovations Series.

With its Medical Manufacturing Innovations Series, SME aims to help medical device manufacturers generate innovations and overcome barriers that are particular to the industry. A key component of MMI will be live, interactive panel discussions and new technology displays and demonstrations, held throughout the year at SME events nationwide. Survey shows manufacturers' concerns over health care costs.

According to quarterly survey by NAM and IndustryWeek, rising health care and insurance costs is manufacturers’ top concern followed closely by political uncertainty and unfavorable business climate. Manufacturers overwhelmingly support comprehensive immigration reform at 68.4%, which explains manufacturing’s advocacy efforts in the current debate in Washington. More than 75% of survey respondents said that foreign-born workers are an integral part of the production process. Read More

AIA Welcomes Steps Taken toward export control reform.

AIA welcomed announcement of formal notification to Congress of first tranche of impending revisions to U.S. Munitions List, calling action "a critical step toward implementation of comprehensive export control reform." AIA went on to commend Obama Administration's "commitment to common sense reform of our export control system" and urged Congress to review and approve necessary changes. AIA is committed to working to see reforms continue and expand to benefit economy and national security. Read More

AIA Receives Award for workforce development activities.

AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey and AIA Director of Workforce Susan Lavrakas were honored at Aviation Week and Space Technology's 56th annual Laureate Awards banquet in workforce category for AIA STEM education activities, which include Team America Rocketry Challenge. From insights into advancements that the electronic manufacturing industry will help drive to solutions to today's manufacturing challenges, IPC APEX EXPO® 2013 provided information, exchange, and connections that helped 4,568 attendees from 42 countries prepare for the future. Total of 8,598 visitors attended event, which was comprised of 130,340 sq ft of show floor space and 425 exhibitors. U.S. EPA Center for Corporate Climate Leadership hosted second annual Climate Leadership Awards in Washington DC, where 23 winners were recognized for their leadership in reducing carbon pollution and addressing climate change. Honors included Organizational Leadership Award, Individual Leadership Award, and Supply Chain Leadership Award as well as Goal Setting and Goal Achievement Certificates for Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management. Distribution Equipment Standard has been approved by ANSI.

NEMA received approval of its distribution equipment standard – ANSI/NEMA AB 3-2013 – from American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Said standard covers molded case circuit breakers and molded case switches, single-pole and multi-pole, fused and unfused, as well as their accessories. NEMA has published NEMA ICS 15.1-2012, Instructions for the Handling, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of Medium Voltage Electric Fire Pump Controllers Rated Not More Than 7200V. Regarding technical considerations of aforementioned controllers, guidelines help prevent personal injury and equipment damage by providing information on handling; storage; installation of conduits, cables, and wires; pre-energization and energization; care and maintenance; and required field marking. CountryMark Refining and Logistics will resolve CAA violations.

Countrymark Refining and Logistics, LLC agreed to pay $167,000 civil penalty, perform environmental projects totaling over $180,000, and spend $18 million on new pollution controls to resolve Clean Air Act (CAA) violations at Mount Vernon, IN refinery. Complaint regards allegations of modifications made without permit or pollution control equipment installation. Complaint is also in regard to flare operation, New Source Performance Standards, and leak detection and repair requirements. More than 100 individuals met for first meeting of ASTM Subcommittee D18.26 on Hydraulic Fracturing. Primary purposes of meeting were to set agendas for coordination of existing ASTM activities related to hydraulic fracturing, and development of new hydraulic fracturing standards. Some area in which standards could be developed include: establishing background contamination levels; evaluating chemistry of waste materials; sealing wellbore for abandonment; and quantifying grout behavior. ASTM A1081/A1081M, Test Method for Evaluating Bond of Seven-Wire Steel Prestressing Strand. According to one member of committee responsible for ASTM A1081/A1081M, test will enable steel wire strand (PC strand) producers to evaluate bond characteristics of their product as QC/QA check point in their manufacturing processes. In new Transportation TV video, FRA Administrator Joe Szabo details 2 major agreements that he says will lead to manufacture and purchase of more than 100 new passenger rail cars in the U.S. Under first agreement, submitted by Sumitomo Corporation of America and Nippon Sharyo, bi-level passenger rail cars will be manufactured at newly established plant in New Rochelle, IL. NAM Says February Employment Report is stronger than expected.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, manufacturers added 14,000 additional workers in February. NAM chief economist Chad Moutray called this "a good start" and said yet more work needs to be done. According to Moutray, policymakers should continue to focus on making business environment "as pro-growth as possible," and manufacturers need policies to compete better globally. If that occurs, said Moutray, achieving average job growth of 20,000 each month should be obtainable. Read More

Biomass Analysis Tool combines speed and precision.

Intended for biofuels industry, High-Throughput Analytical Pyrolysis (HTAP) tool from NREL facilitates and accelerates task of determining cell wall chemistry to find plants with ideal genes. Screening tool can analyze hundreds of biomass samples per day and provide early look at genotypes most worth pursuing. NREL scientists integrated autosampler, pyrolyzer, and molecular beam mass spectrometer to make HTAP, which analyzes samples as small as 4 mg in 2 min.
