ASTM Forensic Psychophysiology Committee to meet June 4.

The next meeting of ASTM International Committee E52 on Forensic Psychophysiology will be held at the 36th Annual Seminar of the American Association of Police Polygraphists. Meeting will provide attendees with information regarding Committee E52 and its standards, as well as an opportunity for attendees to participate in standards development process by providing feedback to proposed revisions of existing E52 standards. AASHTO Praises Senate Passage of 2013 WRDA.

Senate approved Water Resources Development Act of 2013, which provides for conservation and development of USA's water and related resources while establishing flood protection for communities. In comment, AASHTO's Bud Wright lauded Senate for its bipartisan support and said "This vital piece of legislation touches every American...because it covers everything from the ports, to safe drinking water, and the infrastructure used to move people, goods, and ultimately, America's economy." BIO Applauds Introduction of Spread Pricing Liquidity Act.

BIO thanks Senate Agriculture Committee for passing Farm Bill.

BIO thanked members of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee for including mandatory funding for Energy Title programs and eligibility for renewable chemicals in Farm Bill reauthorization legislation, which passed on 15-5 vote in the committee. Support for renewable chemicals and biofuels will help build robust biobased economy that generates good jobs in manufacturing, agricultural production and forestry, transportation and distribution, and construction. PT/MC Industry Expands for twelfth conseuctive quarter.

Representing substantial increase over last quarter's reading of 50.7, 1Q13 PTDA Business Index produced reading of 61.1. This indicates power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) industry expanded at slightly faster pace compared with 4Q12. However, 1Q2013 index is significantly lower when compared against same quarter in previous years (85.5 for 1Q2011 index and 75.4 for 1Q12). BSA Presents Andy Nations with Lifetime Achievement Award.

Andrew Hall Nations, President and CEO of B&D Industrial (aka Bearings & Drives), received BSA's Lifetime Achievement Award at 2013 Annual Convention, which took place May 4–7 on Hilton Head Island, SC. After growing up and filling multiple positions within his family's company, Nations acquired degree in finance from University of Georgia and managed various acquisitions and record growth. Environmental Product Declaration Program will focus on sealants.

ASTM will collaborate with industry to develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across 90+ supported industry markets, including sealants. Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) will partner with ASTM International to raise awareness of this effort, educate industry on value of Type III EPDs, and proactively engage industry in developing Product Category Rules (PCRs). In addition to other facets, ASTM's will and guide process forward as PCRs begin to develop foundation for LCA on sealants. Read More

Fire Protection Engineer named Service to America finalist.

Daniel Madrzykowski, a NIST fire protection engineer with 25-year track record of conducting research that saves lives and improves effectiveness of fire-fighting techniques, has been named as a finalist for 2013 Service to America Medals. A registered professional engineer, Madrzykowski has conducted studies on fire suppressants, gas and oil well fires, effects of sprinkler systems on temperature and toxic concentrations of fire gases, fire incident simulations, and fire-fighting methods. ASTM to hold symposium on ultra-high performance concrete.

Scheduled for December 8, 2013, symposium on Ultra-High Performance Concrete will provide forum to discuss where current ASTM test methods for concrete are inadequate for UHPC, to propose new tests for UHPC, and to exchange ideas as to where new tests need to be developed. Environmental Education Innovation Award given to 11 US teachers.

In partnership with U.S. EPA, White House Council on Environmental Quality announced winners of 2013 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators. Eleven teachers from USA earned recognition for exceptional work as leaders in field of environmental education in formal school settings. EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe noted the "innovative steps" taken by said recipients and expressed gratitude for the presence of "exceptional educators" in American classrooms. Read More
