NREL Wind Center previews changes in wind industry.

Researchers at NREL, along with industry partners, are advancing a more sustainable energy future at the National Wind Technology Center by testing the most advanced wind turbine technologies and preparing them for future deployment. NREL entered into partnership with Alstom in early 2011 when its ECO 100 wind turbine was installed at NWTC for certification testing. Turbine was recently updated to ECO 110 with 110 m rotor diameter, making it the largest, most powerful wind turbine on NWTC site. Read More

ISPE Guidance helps standardize clinical trial booklet labels.

Papers are invited for 4th Symposium on the Evaluation of Existing and New Sensor Technologies for Fatigue, Fracture and Mechanical Testing to be held May 7-8, 2014 in Toronto, Ontario. Incandescent Lamp Shipments suffer sharp decline.

April 12, 2013

NEMA's incandescent lamp shipments index showed precipitous decline of 40.1% compared to same period last year. On annual basis, incandescent lamp shipments during 2012 were down 18.3% – erasing 16.4% gain for 2011. Compact fluorescent lamp shipments dipped slightly during 2012 to index value of 176, a change of 0.3% versus 2011. Meanwhile, halogen A-line lamps continued to make inroads as a viable alternative lamp source increasing by 88.3% over last year. Read More

EPA voids certificates for import of recreational vehicles.

April 12, 2013

U.S. EPA announced it is withdrawing approval of the import and sale of up to 74,000 gas-powered on- and off-road motorcycles and ATVs from China. EPA issued vehicle certificates from 2006-2012 to two companies which operate as Snyder Technology, Inc. and Snyder Computer Systems, Inc. (dba Wildfire Motors Corporation). EPA believes that it received incomplete or falsified certification information, and that manufacturers failed to accurately test emissions from their own products.

AAMA and WDMA release 2012/2013 Industry Review and Forecast.

Delivering timely information on window, door, and skylight market trends and product relationships, AAMA/WDMA 2012/2013 U.S. Industry Statistical Review and Forecast includes historic data for 2006–2012 and forecast data for 2013–2015. In 2012, new residential construction activity closed with 26.5% improvement compared to 2011, and study forecasts similar improvement for 2013. Demand for prime windows increased overall by 6% and demand is expected to increase 15% in 2013. Read More

Voluntary Standards aid spring cleaning.

IEC 60335-2-2 Amd.1 Ed. 6.0 b:2012, Amendment 1 sets down guidelines for vacuums and cleaning apparatuses that use water-suction to clean surfaces, while ISO 19954:2003 offers test methods for evaluating washability of shoes in standard home washing machine. Another standard, ASTM F2367-04a(2010), provides uniform labeling criteria and package requirements for upright brooms, including inch pound unit values, while ANSI B71.1-2012 provides safety specifications for grass-cutting devices. ISO Technical Committee (TC) 8, Ships and marine technology, developed ISO/PAS 28007:2012, Ships and marine technology – Guidelines for Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSC) providing privately contracted armed security personnel (PCASP) on board ships (and pro forma contract). Document outlines operational requirements for casualty management, incident reporting, and investigations. BIO Comments on EPA 2013 Renewable Fuel Standard rules.

In comments submitted to EPA on proposed Regulation of Fuels and Fuel Additives: 2013 Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS), BIO said it believes limits to market access for biofuels (the blendwall) "represent barriers contrived by obligated parties to prevent biofuels from gaining access to the marketplace." BIO emphasized that continued and stable implementation of RFS provides companies developing advanced and cellulosic biofuels confidence that U.S. fuel market will remain open. Read More

NEWF selects SME-EF nominee as New Faces of Engineering winner.

Bryce Davis, a fourth year manufacturing engineering student at Texas State University-San Marcos, who was previously announced as a nominee, has been named one of the New Faces of Engineering College Edition winners by the National Engineers Week Foundation. Bryce is one of 15 promising engineering students recognized by NEWF's New Faces of Engineering program. AIA Says Repealing Sequestration will aid USA security, economy.

April 12, 2013

AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey called upon Congress and President Obama to use upcoming budget cycle to reverse sequestration budget cuts. Specifically, AIA desires elimination of sequestration caps and enactment of "predictable and stable budgets" for DOD, FAA, NASA, and NOAA. Doing such, according to Blakey, "is essential to provide a sufficient level of investment in infrastructure, R&D and acquisition of assets to support our national security and economy." Read More

HID Lamp Shipment Indexes remain on decline.

During 2012, NEMA's High Intensity Discharge lamp shipment indexes declined for second consecutive year. Mercury vapor lamps declined 9.6% to index value of 44 signifying that shipments during 2012 were 44% of the 2006 base level. Index for sodium vapor lamp shipments fell 6.2%, landing at 75, and metal halide lamps posted index reading of 80, declining by 4.9% for the year. Relative market shares for each HID lamp type were essentially unchanged with respect to previous year. Read More

Linear Fluorescent Lamp Shipments wane during 2012.

NEMA’s shipment indexes for T5 and T8 linear fluorescent lamps increased 2.1% and 15.1% in fourth quarter of 2012 to reach 156.8 and 103.1, respectively. However, index for T5 lamps posted annual reading of 159, a decline of 10.7% from 2011, while T8 lamps declined 14% during the year to reach index value of 99 for 2012. Shipments of T12 lamps showed largest annual slide, dipping by 18.6% to 50, half the level of 2006. Index for T12 lamps reached record low of 36.6, a decline of 1.1% during Q4. Read More

ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants presented George V. Dyroff Award of Honorary Committee D02 Membership to Janet Lane, a consultant based in Haddonfield, NJ. Lane has filled several roles on Committee D02 since she joined ASTM in 1989. A specialist in testing and quality assurance of petroleum products and lubricants, Lane was an advanced research associate and program leader in Analytical Science Laboratory at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering for 32 years.
