NFPA publishes standard on pneumatic fluid power.

ISO 6358-2:2013 Pneumatic fluid power – Determination of flow-rate characteristics of components – Part 2: Alternative test methods specifies discharge test and charge test as alternative methods for testing pneumatic fluid power components that use compressible fluids. It does not apply to components whose flow coefficient is unstable during use. In addition, document does not apply to components that exchange energy with fluid during flow-rate measurement. EPMA elects new president during annual General Assembly.

On May 3, European Powder Metallurgy Association held 24th annual General Assembly in Munich, during which Philippe Gundermann was elected as President of Association. Retiring President, Ingo Cremer, provided review of last 6 yrs of service, while Jonathan Wroe, EPMA Executive Director, gave update on EPMA's activities over past 12 months. Also, EPMA Council was re-elected with inclusion of Dr. Rainer Link; Jody Turin, as representative for HIP sector; and Peter Kjeldsteen as Treasurer. Read More

ASTM Award of Merit honors Dr. Warren Haggard's efforts.

Warren Haggard, Ph.D., professor and Herff chair of excellence in biomedical engineering at the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN, received ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. The Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow was given to Haggard in recognition for his "outstanding leadership and high productivity in fostering the development and promulgation of surgical implant standards." ASTM Committee presents Award of Merit to Dr. Carlton Slough.

Carlton G. Slough, Ph.D., senior applications chemist at TA Instruments, has received the ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee E37 on Thermal Measurements. A member of ASTM International since 2005, Slough was honored for his outstanding leadership and contributions as recording secretary of Committee E37. He has also provided significant technical and literary contributions to the development of E37 standards ASTM E2551 and ASTM E2716. Read More

PT/MC Industry continues to forecast growth.

The 1Q13 PTDA Business Index produced a reading of 61.1, which represents substantial increase over last quarter’s reading of 50.7, indicating that the power transmission/motion control industry expanded for 12th consecutive quarter. However, 1Q2013 index is significantly lower when compared against same quarter in previous years. Jerome Klosowski, scientist emeritus of Dow Corning Corp. and president of Klosowski Scientific Inc., Bay City, MI, has received the Walter C. Voss Award, which is presented annually to an engineer or scientist who has made notable contributions in the field of building technology. A fellow of ASTM, Klosowski received the award in recognition of "outstanding contributions that constitute significant advances and innovations to the science of building seals and sealants." WERC announces 2013-2014 Board of Directors.

At the 36th Annual WERC Conference, Warehousing Education and Research Council named logistics professionals to its 2013-2014 Board of Directors. Michael B. Wohlwend of SAP Americas was named President, while Paul M. Avampato of Mondelez International was named Vice President, and Sheila Benny of Optricity Corporation was chosen for Secretary-Treasurer. WERC is the only professional organization focused exclusively on warehouse and distribution management and its role in the supply chain.   Read More

ELFA Equipment Finance Index for April shows rise in volume.

ELFA Monthly Leasing and Finance Index indicated 23% rise in business volume for April year-over-year and 10% rise over March. Index also showed receivables over 30 days were unchanged from previous 2 months, while companies reported submitting 50% more credit transactions than previous month. Also, ELFI's Monthly Confidence Index increased to 56.7 in May. Both indices show optimism on direction of U.S. economy, according to ELFA President and CEO William G. Sutton. Read More

ASTM Sustainability Standard develops invasive plant listings.

Proposed standard STM WK40773, Practice for Invasive Plant Listing, will describe criteria and procedures by which to develop invasive plant list for specific geographic region and as foundation for creating such lists to support building codes and related applications. Being developed by Subcommittee E60.01 on Buildings and Construction, standard takes "an important step forward" in preventing the spread of invasive plants" according to E60.01 member Susan Gitlin. BIO welcomes EPA proposed rule on new RFS2 pathways.

BIO welcomed public comment on proposed Renewable Fuel Standard amendments and clarifications, which include new pathway determinations for advanced biofuels such as isobutanol and ethanol from crop residues. Brent Erickson, EVP of BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section, said, "Finalization of new pathways will clear the way for companies to bring innovative technologies to the marketplace. Report Says Construction Materials Prices fell 0.1% in April.

May 23, 2013

According to May 15 producer price report by U.S. Department of Labor, national construction materials prices slipped 0.1% in April and are up 0.4% year over year. Nonresidential construction materials prices decreased 0.1% for month and down 0.4% over last 12 months. In comment, ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu said "contractors should not be surprised if nonresidential construction materials prices bounce back significantly over the next several months." Saudi Arabia Looks to NREL for solar monitoring expertise.

Saudi Arabia is working with U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for training and expertise in measuring kingdom's solar resource. Importance of setting up networks to gauge and predict solar radiation strength in varying meteorological conditions convinced Saudis to partner with NREL. ANSI approves new robot safety standard.

Developed by RIA, ANSI/RIA R15.06-2012 standard has been updated for first time since 1999 and is now harmonized with International ISO 10218:2011 standard for robot manufacturers and integrators. A key feature of standard is "collaborative operation," which is the introduction of a worker to the loop of active interaction during automatic robot operation. Standard also addresses "safety-rated soft axis and space limiting" technology, which is optionally available on new robots. Read More
