FAA Boosts Aviation Safety via new pilot qualification standards.

July 17, 2013

Final rule announced by FAA increases qualification requirements for first officers (co-pilots) who fly for U.S. passenger and cargo airlines. Co-pilots must hold Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, requiring 1,500 hr total time as pilot, as well as have aircraft type rating, which involves additional training and testing specific to airplanes they fly. In comment, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the traveling public deserves "the most qualified and best trained pilots." Read More

This designation by ANSI is a result of 6-month application and review process including public review period. Smart Grid Interoperability Standard has been approved by ANSI.

NEMA received approval July 10 from ANSI for ANSI/NEMA SG-IC 1-2013 Smart Grid Interoperable and Conformant Testing and Certification Scheme Operator Guidelines. With development efforts led by NEMA, this standard describes roles and responsibilities for each of 4 main participants in testing scheme for interoperability and security among Smart Grid products. Guideline brings uniformity and portability to process and creates necessary levels of checks and balances. APMI International names two 2013 Fellows.

Olle Grinder, Consultant, PM Technology AB, and Roger Lawcock, Director, Product and Process Development, Stackpole International, have been named to 2013 Class of Fellows by APMI International. Member of APMI for 27+ years, powder metallurgist Grinder possesses 43+ years of powder metallurgy (PM) experience and has published 60 reports. Lawcock, APMI member for near 20 years, is one of the pioneers of roll-densification process for gears, converting numerous gears from wrought to PM. Read More

HI Names Mark Sullivan Director of Education and Training at PSM.

Hydraulic Institute appointed Mark J. Sullivan as its new Director of Education and Training. In this role, Sullivan will support Pump Systems Matter (PSM), 501(c)3 education/training organization, and lead all strategic development, marketing, and PSM educational programs as well as personnel certification initiatives. ASTM International Committee E50 on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management, and Corrective Action presented Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow to Dennis D. Rounds, manager for Multi-Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) projects for Morris Inc. (Ft. Pierre, SD). AIA Speaks to Importance of Hochberg's Ex-Im nomination.

In her statement on upcoming debate and vote for Fred P. Hochberg's nomination to second term as head of Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im), AIA's Marion C. Blakey cited Ex-Im's important role in helping American companies compete on level playing field and financing that can mean difference between growth or layoffs. Manufacturing Technology Orders were reported up 13.6% in May.

AMT's United States Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) Report shows $430.06 million total for May. With year-to-date total of $2,085.14 million, 2013 is down 6.9% compared with 2012. AMT's Patrick W. McGibbon commented that "New technologies are creating change in automotive production, while many aerospace manufacturers are making shifts within their supply chains." McGibbon also attributed growth to cost advantages of manufacturing within USA and foreign direct investment. Read More

AIA Says Security of Americans is threatened by budget politics.

Addressing risk to USA's national security strategy outlined in Defense Secretary Hagel's July 10 letter to Senate Armed Services Committee, AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey said AIA is "gravely concerned by the second wave of sequestration impacts." Blakey continued, expressing AIA's advocacy for President Obama's annual proposed budgets for fiscal years 2013 and 2014, but also noted unseen effects of cuts including loss of critical skills and experience represented by workforce. Draft IREC Standard 01023: 2013 for Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Distributed Generation Training is a result of IREC revising Standard 01022, currently used for assessment of training organizations and instructors in same industry space. Standard 01022 has been divided to address training provider and instructor separately. Ali Bahrami, an executive with more than 30 years of experience in aviation and one of America’s leading experts in commercial aircraft certification and validation, has joined AIA as VP of Civil Aviation. He will be responsible for managing AIA’s work and advocacy on civil aviation issues including integration of unmanned aircraft systems into national airspace system.
