Euro PM2014 Exhibition getting set for Salzburg.

EPMA has confirmed the Euro PM2014 International Conference and Exhibition will be held in Salzburg, Austria, September 21-24, 2014 at The Messezentrum Salzburg. Event will host program of over 250 oral and poster papers that will cover all aspects of powder metallurgy including hard materials and diamond tools, hot isostatic pressing, metal injection molding, new materials and applications, and PM structural parts. U.S. Cutting Tool Consumption rises 1.3% in August 2013.

According to U.S. Cutting Tool Institute and AMT, August 2013 U.S. cutting tool consumption totaled $161.7 million as reported by companies participating in Cutting Tool Market Report (CTMR) collaboration — up 1.3% from July but down 13.2% from August 2012. Year-to-date shipments are $1.33 billion, which is down 7.9% from same period in 2012. USCTI president Dave Povich pointed out modest growth in 2013 that purchasing manager surveys point to uptick heading towards 2014. Read More

VMA releases Employment Snapshot Report.

During briefing at its 75th Anniversary Annual Meeting, VMA reported that the valve industry employs 50% more people than a decade ago and is expecting to add many more this year. VMA unveiled the Employment Snapshot Report and discussed new trends affecting economic outlook of valve industry. More than half of responding member companies reported their domestic hiring was growing 5% this year. Nearly 1/5 expected growth up to 10% and another fifth is planning to grow their ranks up to 16%. Read More

NEMA has published the 2014 edition of its Electrical Standards & Products Guide, a comprehensive listing of NEMA electrical standards as well as an extensive directory of manufacturers and their products. ESPG is used by military, government, and private buyers who work in lighting, motors and industrial controls, transmission and distribution, transportation, medical imaging, architecture and construction, and other industries that specify and use electrical equipment. Standard addresses manufactured graphite/carbon electrodes.

NEMA has published NEMA CG 1-2013 Manufactured Graphite/Carbon Electrodes, a standard that adopts the requirements of two international standards—IEC 60529 and IEC/TR 62157—concerning dimensions and designations of graphite and carbon electrodes used in arc furnace applications. All requirements in CG 1-1999 were replaced with requirements from IEC 60529 and IEC/TR 62157. Read More

ASTM Roofing Committee developing sustainability standards.

Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, through Subcommittee D08.24 on Sustainability, is developing ASTM WK26599, Guide for Design of Sustainable, Low-Slope Roofing Systems. Standard describes process by which designer or specifier looks at demands and factors that roofing system must be capable of withstanding. External factors include wind, weather, rainfall, chemical exposure, and foot traffic. Building pressurization and humidification are among internal factors to be considered. Read More

NEMA published ANSI C136.25-2013 Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment–Ingress Protection (Resistance to Dust, Solid Objects, and Moisture) for Luminaire Enclosures. Types of protection covered in detail therein includes protection of persons who have contact with or approach energized electrical components inside luminaire enclosure as well as protection of equipment inside enclosure against harmful ingress of water, solid foreign objects, or dust. Investment in Equipment and Software expected to grow.

According to Q4 update to 2013 Equipment Leasing and Finance U.S. Economic Outlook, investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 3.3% in 2013. Equipment and software investment slowed from 3.1% annualized growth in Q1 2013 to just 1.0% in second quarter, but report predicts modest improvement in second half of the year, depending on outcome of current fiscal policy debates. Growth is expected to be mixed, with some sectors outperforming others. Read More
