EPA's Tier III Rule can encourage adoption of biofuels.

BIO urged EPA to issue final Tier 3 Motor Vehicle Emission and Fuel Standards rule that maximizes investment in and adoption of advanced biofuels. According to Brent Erickson, executive VP of BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section, encouraging biofuels, including higher blends of ethanol and drop-in biofuels, would help meet EPA’s overall goal in this rulemaking to address the impacts of motor vehicles and fuels on air quality and public health. SciFinder® offers API capabilities.

Chemical Abstracts Service announced that the SciFinder® interface now enables range of APIs designed to streamline researchers' workflows. CAS has collaborated with several customers to develop API support for reaction, substance, and reference searching. Available web services will access SciFinder to search CAS databases for chemical information, providing means to seamlessly integrate customer's internal tools and systems with SciFinder. Read More

IREC Revises Model Rules for Shared Renewable Energy Programs.

IREC has released updated version of its Model Rules for Shared Renewable Energy Programs. Revised in collaboration with Vote Solar Initiative, Model Program Rules still aid stakeholders in developing shared renewables programs to broaden renewable energy access to more consumers. According to NREL’s Joe Wiedman, updated rules "are a clear and current primer on shared renewable energy, covering all of the major issues relevant to these programs." Read More

Renewable Chemicals Legislation is applauded by BIO.

BIO thanked Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) for introducing Qualifying Renewable Chemical Production Tax Credit Act of 2013, which grants renewable chemical producers access to production tax credits available to other renewable energy producers. BIO's Jim Greenwood said "Creating a level playing field in tax policy will help U.S. industrial biotech companies innovate and develop new products." IPC Report shows PCB book-to-bill ratio remains strong.

July 2, 2013

Findings from IPC's monthly North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program for May 2013 show PCB book-to-bill ratio stayed strong for sixth consecutive month, remaining at 1.10. Total North American PCB shipments were down 4.4% from May 2012, but bookings increased 8.3% year over year (Y/Y). Year to date (YTD), PCB industry shipments were down 4.9% and bookings were down 0.3%. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments increased 0.9% and bookings grew 6.5%. Read More

With 1,057 exhibitors, 199,025 net sq-ft of aisles, and 16% increase in attendance from 2012, EXPO PACK México 2013 was a testament to the vibrancy of the Mexican marketplace. ASTM Cement Committee honors Paul Stutzman with Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement presented Award of Merit and title of fellow to Paul Stutzman, physical scientist at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD, for his longtime service and contributions to development of standards for measurement and analysis of microstructural features of hydraulic cements and other concrete-making materials. ASTM International member since 1990, Stutzman serves as C01 secretary and is also member of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. Read More

NREL drives toward future with fuel cell EVs.

As part of Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, NREL has received 4 Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles - Advanced on loan from Toyota, which will help NREL enhance research capabilities related to hydrogen fueling infrastructure, renewable hydrogen production, and vehicle performance. Testing will include observing how vehicles interact with fueling infrastructure and fueling stations that operate at different pressures, as well as how drivers interact with vehicles and influence performance. FAA AIP Grants improve Logan Airport runway safety.

July 1, 2013

FAA and Massachusetts Port Authority unveiled 2 safety enhancements to Logan Airport's longest runway. Totaling $50 million, FAA Airport Improvement Project (AIP) grants helped fund crushable concrete safety area, which includes 300 ft wide concrete pier that extends 470 ft into Boston Harbor at end of Runway 33L, to prevent planes from overrunning runway. FAA also installed navigational aid improvements that will help planes land safely in bad weather. Read More

Markwardt Award from ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood in recognition of his extensive contributions to standards activities within Committee D07, particularly those related to development of standards for engineering use of wood and wood-based materials in building construction. NIST Radio Station WWVB logs 50 years of innovation.

Today, NIST's WWVB radio station is best known for broadcasting time to estimated 50 million radio-controlled clock radios, wall clocks, wristwatches, and other timekeeping devices across U.S. mainland. But back in 1963, station had a different audience, broadcasting standard frequencies at high accuracy needed by satellite and missile programs. Time signal, added 2 years later, then became means of synchronizing power plants to prevent brownouts, and coordinating analog telephone networks. Read More
