Gothenburg Successfully Hosts Euro PM Congress 2013.

City of Gothenburg hosted Euro PM Congress 2013, which was organized and sponsored by European Powder Metallurgy Association. International event included delegates from nearly 50 countries in all regions, and technical content attracted 200+ Oral and Poster presentations as well as attendance of 800+ participants from all parts of PM industry. ASTM honors Dr. Markus Heinimann with Award of Merit.

A member of ASTM since 1996, Markus Heinimann, Ph.D., technology manager – aerospace at Alcoa Technical Center, Alcoa Center, PA, has received ASTM International Award of Merit. Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture honored Heinimann for his exceptional and sustained technical and leadership contributions, in particular to the advancement and application of fracture mechanics technologies for structural integrity and reliability in the aerospace industry. Investment in Equipment and Software expected to grow.

According to Q4 update to 2013 Equipment Leasing and Finance U.S. Economic Outlook, investment in equipment and software is expected to grow 3.3% in 2013. Equipment and software investment slowed from 3.1% annualized growth in Q1 2013 to just 1.0% in second quarter, but report predicts modest improvement in second half of the year, depending on outcome of current fiscal policy debates. Growth is expected to be mixed, with some sectors outperforming others. Read More

ASTM's Diesel Exhaust Fluid Proficiency Testing Program provides laboratories with statistical quality assurance tool, enabling them to compare, improve, and maintain high level of performance in use of ISO methods with other laboratories worldwide. Impurities in DEF can cause selective catalytic reduction technology, which is part of diesel engine’s powertrain configuration, to fail. NEMA Announces Spanish Website with translated documents.

To help improve understanding of safe and reliable electrical systems and components in Latin American countries, NEMA has translated several NEMA electrical standards and other technical documents into Spanish and made them available on NEMA's Spanish standards webpage (Normas en Español). Revised Forecast reflects stalled growth.

October 8, 2013

August 2013 findings from IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program includes revised 2013 forecast of nearly flat sales growth for 2013. Total North American PCB shipments decreased 1.6% from August 2012, and bookings decreased 9.1%. Year to date, PCB industry shipments were below 2012 at -3.9%, and bookings were down 1.0%. Compared to July, PCB shipments were up 5.3% while bookings were down 8.1%. Shipments exceeded bookings, and PCB book-to-bill ratio dropped to parity at 1.00. Read More

EPA to restrict import of harmful carpet chemicals. .

October 8, 2013

U.S. EPA is finalizing rule that will allow agency to restrict import of potentially harmful perfluorinated chemicals that could be used in carpets. Regulation will require companies to report to EPA all new uses, including in domestic and imported products, of these chemicals once used for soil and stain resistance in carpets. These chemicals have been shown to persist in the environment and bioaccumulate in humans and animals, representing potential threat to health of Americans. Read More

For its significant, lifesaving contributions to consumer product safety, ASTM Subcommittee F15.22 on Toy Safety is among 5 recipients of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2013 Chairman’s Circle of Commendation Award. Subcommittee was awarded for its development and ongoing maintenance of ASTM F963, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety, which establishes nationally recognized safety requirements for toys intended for use by children under 14.
