FAA upgrades Ukraine's aviation safety rating.

FAA announced that Ukraine complies with international safety standards set by International Civil Aviation Organization, based on results of July FAA review of Ukraine's civil aviation authority. Ukraine is now upgraded to Category 1 from the Category 2 safety rating the country received in June 2005. With the International Aviation Safety Assessment Category 1 rating, Ukraine’s air carriers can add flights and service to the United States and carry the code of U.S. carriers. Read More

ASTM Standard outlines sustainable laundry best practices.

Developed by Subcommittee D13.40 on Sustainability of Textiles, part of ASTM International Committee D13 on Textiles, ASTM D7841 identifies and defines sustainable laundry best management practices that are used by commercial laundry facilities to reduce their impact on the environment. Examples include: water reuse technology, boiler heat recovery, energy efficient low-temperature detergents, alternative energy, fleet vehicle route optimization, and recycling programs. Read More

ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing presented Rene Dupuis, Ph.D., principal at Structure Research Inc., with William C. Cullen Award for his contributions to international standards for roofing and waterproofing. Member of ASTM International and Committee D08 since 1978, Dupuis works on several D08 subcommittees, received D08 Award of Appreciation twice, and was honored with Walter C. Voss Award in 2005 for contributions in field of building technology. Read More

GAWDA Honors Dick Couch with Presidential Award of Excellence.

GAWDA is recognizing Hypertherm founder and CEO Dick Couch with its Presidential Award of Excellence, which recognizes outstanding contributions to industry. While bestowing this award, GAWDA president Craig Wood cited Couch's passion and dedication to improving gas and welding industry. Wood also mentioned Hypertherm's 111 patents related to metal cutting technology and noted that Couch is named-inventor or co-inventor on 42 of them. Couch founded Hypertherm in 1968. Read More

ASTM International Committee F13 on Pedestrian/Walkway Safety and Footwear has honored William Ells, VP of sales at Vibram USA, Concord, MA, with Award of Merit. Committee F13 recognized Ells for his dedicated service and commitment to development of safety standards for footwear. A member of ASTM International since 1998, Ells played a large part in development of ASTM F2913, which addresses slip resistance of personal protective footwear used in wide variety of industries. NEMA Publishes Standard on low-voltage cartridge fuses.

Covering 8 classes of low-voltage cartridge fuses (G, H, J, K, L, R, T, and CC), NEMA FU 1-2012 Low Voltage Cartridge examines fuses of current-responsive element inside fuse body with contacts on both ends. These fuses are rated 600 V or less, alternating current (AC), and direct current (DC). Updates include direct current tests for photovoltaic fuses. Read More

Boeing completes Mission Control Center interface test.

For first time, Mission Control Center at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston has tested communications with commercial, crew-capable spacecraft, as The Boeing Company conducted an interface test between MCC and software planned for company's CST-100 spacecraft. Boeing has partnered with NASA to develop a fully integrated crew transportation system, with its CST-100 spacecraft and United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, in partnership with NASA's Commercial Crew Program. EPA and Energy Department release used vehicle fuel economy tool.

U.S. Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a new label featuring EPA fuel economy estimates and CO2 estimates for used vehicles sold in the USA since 1984. Consumers may create this new label electronically as part of a new tool available on FuelEconomy.gov. While electronic graphic can be downloaded and included in online advertisements on Web, paper label may be printed and affixed to vehicle window. Read More

World PCB Market grew 1.7% in 2012.

According to IPC's World PCB Production Report for Year 2012, world market for PCBs reached nearly $60 billion in 2012, with 1.7% real growth over 2011. Report shows Asia with 90% of world PCB production. China’s share of world production is now 42.8% and Japan is now distant second with 16%. South Korea had a great year in 2012, surpassing Taiwan and moving into third place, while United States held onto fifth place rank with just under 5% share. Read More
