Hand Soldering Competition seeks championship title contenders.

For chance to compete in IPC World Championship on March 27, third annual IPC APEX EXPO® Hand Soldering Competition (March 25–26, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV) will task soldering technicians with building functional electronics assembly within 30 min. IPC Master Instructors will judge assemblies based on soldering in accordance with IPC-A-610E, overall electrical functionality of assembly, and speed upon which assembly was produced. Biofuel Groups Ask to Intervene in legal challenge to RFS2.

BIO, Growth Energy, and Renewable Fuels Association filed on November 1, 2013 motion in U.S. Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit to intervene in support of EPA Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2) 2013 final rule. Monroe Energy, American Petroleum Institute, and American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers are challenging this rule and seek reduction of 2013 volume obligations for all renewable fuels, which would directly impact interests of biofuel trade groups’ member companies. EPRI Receives Funding from DOE to support solar energy R&D.

EPRI will receive over $5 million in funding from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for projects that are part of SunShot Initiative, which represents collaborative, national effort to drive innovation to make solar energy cost-competitive with traditional energy sources by this decade's end. Awards in which EPRI is included are Solar Utility Networks: Replicable Innovations in Solar Energy (SUNRISE) award and Grid Engineering for Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment (GEARED) award. Public Listening Sessions address power plant carbon pollution.

U.S. EPA will hold 11 public listening sessions to solicit ideas and input from public and stakeholders about best Clean Air Act (CAA) approaches to reducing carbon pollution from existing power plants, which represent largest stationary source of carbon pollution in USA. Feedback from these sessions will help EPA develop smart, cost-effective guidelines that reflect latest and best information available. Experts Will Present Research at Tin Whiskers Symposium.

Eric Chason, Ph.D., professor of engineering at Brown University, will present his tin whisker research at 7th International Tin Whiskers Symposium, which will take place November 12–13, 2013 in Costa Mesa, CA. His presentation, "Real Time Study of Whiskers/Hillock Formation in Sn-Cu Systems During Thermal Cycling," will provide information on systematic experiments conducted to confirm that stress from intermetallics causes tin whiskers to form. AMCA Announces Approval of Air Curtains as vestibule alternatives.

November 4, 2013

As announced by AMCA International, 2015 version of International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) will contain provision that enables air curtains to be considered as alternative to vestibules. Compliance requires air curtains to be tested in accordance with ANSI/AMCA Standard 220 and installed to manufacturer instructions. ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates has presented the Katharine and Bryant Mather Member Contribution Award to Matthew Offenberg, technical services manager at W.R. Grace and Co. Committee cited Offenberg for outstanding contributions in development of standards and dissemination of knowledge related to pervious concrete and enhancement of cement and concrete technology standards. EPA releases GHG emissions data from large facilities.

November 4, 2013

EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program collects annual GHG information from over 8,000 facilities in largest emitting industries. According to data, emissions from power plants have decreased 10% in the 2 years since reporting began, due to switch from coal to natural gas for electricity and slight decrease in electricity production. Fossil-fuel fired power plants remain largest source of emissions with just under 1,600 facilities emitting over 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2012. Read More

EPA Funding to help communities with green infrastructure.

November 1, 2013

U.S. EPA announced $400,000 will go to help 6 communities expand their use of green infrastructure to reduce water pollution as well as boost resilience to impacts of climate change. Specific communities that will be receiving assistance include Providence, RI ($75,000); Detroit, MI ($65,000); Lincoln, NE ($65,000); Gary, IN ($65,000); Pima County, AZ ($65,000); and Spartanburg, SC ($65,000). EPA Announces Funding for students' green technology innovations.

U.S. EPA announced 2013 recipients of its People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) Phase I grants. In total, 40 teams of graduate and undergraduate students from across USA will receive $15,000 grant for research proposals that develop solutions to real-world environmental challenges. P3 Phase I teams in 2013 come from 34 universities in 26 states, and their projects cover range of environmental and health topics.
