FPSA and Messe Düsseldorf extend strategic alliance.

FPSA's extended alliance with Messe Düsseldorf allows for cross promotion of the biennial PROCESS EXPO held in Chicago, and interpack, the world’s largest trade show for the packaging sector and related processing industries, which is held every 3 years in Düsseldorf, Germany. Messe Düsseldorf will be aiding PROCESS EXPO in the sale of booth space as well as promoting attendance to food processors around the globe, while FPSA will assist Messe Düsseldorf in the North American markets. ISPE announces recipients of 2013 International Honor Awards.

ISPE announced the recipients of its 2013 International Honor Awards at the Society’s Annual Meeting held in Washington, DC. Dr. John Berridge was honored with Joseph X. Phillips Professional Achievement Award, while Jean-Francois Duliere of Technip France was awarded the Max Seales Yonker Member of the Year Award. Stephen Tyler of AbbVie and Winnie Cappucci, retired from Bayer Healthcare, were both honored with Richard B. Purdy Distinguished Achievement Award. Read More

ASTM Committee honors Dr. Darla Goeres.

ASTM International Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents has presented the Chip Collins Award to Darla Goeres, Ph.D., assistant research professor of chemical and biological engineering at the Center for Biofilm Engineering, Montana State University. An alumna of Montana State and member of ASTM International since 2000, Goeres was honored for her innovation and contributions to development of E35 biofilm standards. AAMA Fall Conference discusses ENERY STAR criteria.

During AAMA Fall Conference, Doug Anderson, manager of EPA's ENERGY STAR® program, provided insight into rationale EPA used in developing Version 6.0 of the ENERGY STAR for Windows, Doors and Skylights program. In response to stakeholder comments on Draft 2, EPA made adjustments in final draft, including extending implementation date to Jan 2015; adjusting window criteria for North-Central and South-Central Zones to 0.30; and adjusting skylight criteria in North and North-Central Zones to 0.48. FAA and Industry Move Forward on U.S. Air Carrier training.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta called on airline industry to assess and prioritize voluntary actions to improve pilot, flight attendant, and dispatcher training via joint government and industry steering group. This group would collaboratively evaluate best practices from across industry, review recommendations from previous FAA rulemaking advisory committees on training issues, and examine newly identified areas of risk to develop voluntary training guidelines for air carriers. IREC Responds to SGIP rule changes adopted by FERC.

December 2, 2013

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) adopted modifications to Small Generator Interconnection Procedures (SGIP), which should facilitate efficient interconnection process for small renewable generators. IREC's Jane Weissman called these rule changes "an important step forward for interconnection in the United States," and added that utilities will be able to process applications for small generators more effectively while maintaining safety and reliability of interconnection process. RIA announced that Tennessee-based Automation IG has received prestigious RIA Certified Robot Integrator designation. In order to become certified, Automation IG completed rigorous process which includes on-site audit and testing of key personnel among other important criteria. According to Jeff Burnstein, President of RIA, Certified Robot Integrator program strengthens overall integrator channel and allows integrators to benchmark their own processes against best industry practices. CIP Safety(TM) Application Coverage expands to include safe motion.

Next edition of The CIP Safety Specification will include services for safe motion applications. With this addition, users will be able to deploy networked motion control systems using EtherNet/IP and Sercos III™ in applications requiring such safe motion functions as safe torque off and safety limited positions. Enhancements to CIP Safety related to safe motion relied on IEC 61800-5-2 as framework and are part of ODVA's semi-annual specifications update. Read More

FABTECH 2013 sets records for attendance and exhibition.

FABTECH 2013 set attendee, exhibitor, and floor space records. In total, 40,667 attendees visited 1,573 exhibitors to see live equipment demonstrations and compare products side-by-side at displays spread across 650,000 ft² of exhibits at McCormick Place. FABTECH show co-manager John Catalano noted how attendees were impressed with show's size and scope as well as number of new products and technologies and that exhibitors reported "brisk" sales activity and "plentiful" leads. NEMA's published white paper, NEMA ADP 2-2013 Molded Case Circuit Breaker Systems Testing with Conductors, discusses necessity of testing circuit breakers with wire to demonstrate protection. As defined in UL 489, standard tests include overload and thermal tests, endurance followed by low level short circuit interrupting tests, and standard low level short circuit interrupting tests. IPC names Hand Soldering Competition winners.

November 26, 2013

During IPC's Hand Soldering Competition at productronica 2013, participants were tasked with building a functional electronics assembly within 45-minute time limit. Taking first place, Jacek Majchrzak of PartnerTech in Poland received cash prize of Euros500 and a new soldering station from JBC Tools. Second place and cash prize of Euros300 went to Baigyou Tamas of GÉMOSZ Elektronikai Kft in Hungary, while Halil Ibrahim Demir of Tai Tusas Aerospace in Turkey took third place and cash prize of Euros100. ASTM SPRI Partnership produces single ply roofing membranes PCR.

ASTM International and Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI) collaborated to publish Product Category Rules (PCR) for single ply roofing membranes. PCR details rules and guidelines for developing environmental declaration for single ply roofing products that fulfill equivalent functions. PCR includes TPO, KEE, PVC, and EPDM and provides requirements for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Read More

ASTM Honors Fred Alverson with Award of Merit.

Fred C. Alverson, principal engineer at Shell Global Solutions, Houston, TX, received ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow for his contributions to Committee D15 on Engine Coolants and Related Fluids, which he joined in 2002. Currently, Alverson serves as D15 recording secretary and also chairs Subcommittee D15.21 on Extended Life Coolants. He also works on several D15 subcommittees and, outside ASTM International, is member of SAE International. Read More

EPA proposes new guidelines for greener federal purchases.

EPA is proposing draft guidelines that will help federal government buy greener and safer products. In response to broad stakeholder interest, EPA is seeking public input on these guidelines and potential approach to assessing non-governmental environmental standards and ecolabels already in marketplace. Draft guidelines address key characteristics of environmental standards and ecolabels, including credibility of development process and effectiveness of criteria for environmental performance. EPA Funding Aims to Reduce Pollution from diesel engines.

November 26, 2013

U.S. EPA made $2 million in funding available for rebates, offered as part of Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA), to help public and private construction equipment owners replace or retrofit older diesel construction engines. According to EPA's Janet McCabe, "These rebates will help equipment owners protect public health and improve air quality near construction sites while updating their fleets." The 3Q13 PTDA Business Index produced reading of 51.6 which represents decrease over last quarter's reading of 54.7 and third consecutive quarter of slower growth. Survey participants anticipate limited upside for the channel in 2014, possibly driven by decreasing pricing power. Conducted jointly by PTDA and Cleveland Research Company, PTDA Business Index tracks change in business activity, new orders, employment, supplier deliveries, inventories, prices, and backlog in PT/MC industry.
