Competition gives students practical design experience.

Among 32 schools that submitted entries to ASHRAE's 2009 Student Design Competition, 3 stood out as first place winners in HVAC System Design, HVAC System Selection, and Integrated Sustainable Building Design (ISBD) categories. Winners were respectively from California Polytechnic State University, Kansas State University, and Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. Each year, competition aims to get students more involved with their chosen major through practical design. Read More

Research Uncovers safer, denser acetylene storage material.

A team of scientists working at NIST, has figured out why a recently discovered material can safely store, at low pressure, up to 100X as much acetylene as can be done with conventional methods. The team probed the atomic-level workings of metal-organic framework (MOF) that soaks up acetylene like a sponge. Using tools at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, these scientists have shown that exposed copper atoms within the lattice give the MOF its capability for storing acetylene. Read More

Business Conditions Report is optimistic for next 3 months.

According to the August 2009 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies predict a spike in business conditions over the next 3 months. This report shows metalformers feel more optimistic about general economic activity than they have since February 2004. Other results pointed to 62% of metalforming companies forecasting increases in incoming orders and 39% reporting increased average daily shipping levels. Also, portions of workforce on short time or layoff have declined. Read More

SME and Purdue unveil new green certificate program.

SME is collaborating with Purdue University's Technical Assistance Program (TAP) to develop the Green Manufacturing Specialist Certificate. TAP curriculum focuses on sustainable manufacturing, energy efficiency, water conservation, reuse/recycling, designing for environment, and environmental effects of different pollutants. Partnership includes SME developing an accompanying exam or outcome-based assessment, which will be tested by TAP green work force training program participants. Read More

On October 6, 2009, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) will sponsor a technology transfer and commercialization showcase for bio-imaging technologies developed by NIST and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This showcase will be held at NIST's campus in Gaithersburg, MD and feature 50+ government-developed technologies available for licensing or use. IPC releases PCB industry results for July 2009.

According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments declined 26.2% and bookings were down 22.3% in July 2009 from July 2008, and book-to-bill ratio pulled back slightly to 1.09. Flexible circuit shipments in July 2009 went down 14.9% and bookings declined 32.9% compared to July 2008. Flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio fell back to 0.94. For rigid and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments decreased 25.3% from July 2008 and orders booked decreased 23.1%. Read More

Reference Material targets infant/adult formula analysis.

Chemists at NIST have issued a certified reference material for determining concentrations of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in infant/adult nutritional formula as well as similar products. Standard Reference Material (SRM 1849) for Infant/Adult Nutritional Formula improves upon discontinued SRM 1846, Infant Formula, by containing certified values for 43 nutrients - including vitamins, minerals, and elements - as well as 43 reference values for amino acids and nucleotides. NIST Airframe Tests ensure shielding for flight instruments.

Recent tests by researchers at NIST will provide independent data on how electromagnetic radiation penetrates aircraft, helping to ensure continued air travel safety. NIST performed High Intensity Radiated Field tests on 3 representative aircraft to give FAA officials frame of reference for procedures and data reduction techniques used for typical low-level airframe HIRF attenuation/shielded tests. Hogentogler Award given to Vincenzo Fioravante, Ph.D.

Dr. Vincenzo Fioravante received the C.A. Hogentogler Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock for his paper, "Physical Modeling of Landslide Stabilization Methods in an Overconsolidated Clay," which had formally appeared in the 2008 ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal. This annual award is given to the author or authors of a paper of outstanding merit on soil and/or rock for engineering purposes that is published by the Society. Read More
