PTDA Report shows slight increase in U.S./Canadian orders.

According to PTDA's July 2009 Market Outlook Report, confidence in U.S. and Canadian market rose by 0.1%, though sales for both decreased overall in July 2009 compared to June 2009 and July 2008. All 9 product categories for U.S. manufacturers posted sales losses, but for Canadian manufacturers, 5 categories posted sales gains, including 53.3% increase for clutches and brakes. Other growth categories include mounted bearings, shaft couplings, industrial motors, and mechanical drive systems. Read More

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer speaks at NAM meeting.

In address to more than 200 manufacturers attending NAM National Public Affairs Steering Committee meeting, Hoyer recognized NAM as resource for Congress on how proposed health care reform will impact manufacturers' businesses and employees. Hoyer also endorsed action on pending free trade agreements with Colombia and Panama and called for substantial tax reform, stressing that bipartisanship is important in reforming tax code. BIO announced sessions and speaker presentations at 2009 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy, to be held November 8-11, 2009, in Honolulu. The Baldrige National Quality Program recently published "blinded" scoring data on 1,033 applicants for Baldrige National Quality Award during the years 1990-2006. Presented in both tabular and graphic forms, scoring data come from both independent and consensus reviews for: all 17 years and all 6 award categories; all 17 years by individual category; comparison of categories within individual years; and comparison of years within individual categories. President Obama announces intent to nominate NIST director.

President Barack Obama has announced intent to nominate physicist Patrick Gallagher to be 14th director of NIST. Gallagher's leadership will be critical to agency that is central to nation's ability to innovate and compete in global markets, according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. Awaiting confirmation by Senate, Gallagher began working at NIST Center for Neutron Research in 1993 and was appointed deputy director of NIST in September 2008. Read More

Calculations may improve microfluidics temperature measures,

NIST has proposed a mathematical solution that enables researchers to calibrate the thermometer for microfluidic systems so that all temperatures are covered. Mathematical methods can correct for shift experienced when reference temperature changes, allowing researchers to create generalized calibration equations that can be applied to any reference temperature. Trace Explosives Standard slated for homeland security duty.

To aid in search for explosive materials and persons who have been in contact with them, NIST, with support from Department of Homeland Security, has developed Standard Reference Material 2905, Trace Particulate Explosives. SRM 2905 consists of 4 different test substances designed to simulate trace residues of C-4 plastic explosives and TNT, and will be helpful in calibrating, testing, and developing standard best operating procedures for trace explosives detectors.
