Database centralizes data for medical device professionals.

ASTM International has jointly developed, alongside AAMI, ANSI, and DIN, the Medical Device Standards Portal, which provides access to medical device standards and related information. Access to 1,300+ standards as well as critical documents from AAMI, ASTM, DIN, U.S. FDA, IEC, ISO, and various European regulations is available from one database. Upon initial launch, documents will be fully indexed and in PDF format. By year-end, they are also anticipated to be available in HTML format. Read More

Nonresidential Construction Spending declines in July.

Total nonresidential construction spending, both private and public, fell to $703.8 billion, according to September 1 report by U.S. Census Bureau. Water supply, religious-related, and manufacturing subsectors increased on monthly basis, while commercial and power construction had largest losses. According to Anirban Basu, this means while stimulus package is having impact on residential construction sector, segments indirectly supported by it will still struggle. Read More

NAM Chief Economist comments on jobs report.

According to statement made by NAM chief economist, David Huether, on July employment report, economy shed 216,000 last month and unemployment rate increased to 9.7% from 9.4% in July. Numbers were in line with expectations of continued job losses, but at slower pace than earlier months. ISM numbers released offer reason for cautious optimism about the future trend of manufacturing employment, but there are significant risk factors. Read More

Manufacturer Survey reveals recession survival strategies.

Manufacturers detail recession survival strategies in a survey conducted in late July by sponsors of the FABTECH® International and AWS Welding Show. Of 1,046 past/prospective registrants, 69% of manufacturers indicated they reduced their workforce, 66% delayed capital expenditures, 48% negotiated with suppliers for better deals, and 37% cut promotional activities to survive the economic downturn. ASTM issues tin-coated annealed copper wire standard.

Standard B965, Specification for High Performance Tin-Coated Annealed Copper Wire Intended for Electrical and Electronic Application for Solderability, has been approved by ASTM International Committee B01. Developed by Subcommittee B01.04 on Conductors of Copper and Copper Alloys, standard addresses bare conductor requirements, quality test, and inspection criteria for solderability testing, according to Stephen Childers, and will have applications in electronics and aerospace industries. Southeast Transportation Leaders tout recovery spending.

At a news conference, Leaders of the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO) conveyed progress being made to create and sustain jobs using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. All 50 state departments of transportation and the District of Columbia met a June 30th deadline to assign 50% of their ARRA funds to specific highway projects. SASHTO's 12 member states are slated to receive over $7 billion in ARRA funding for highways/bridges. Read More

ASTM Standard measures powder flow rate with Carney funnel.

Developed by Subcommittee B09.02 on Base Metal Powders, B964, Test Methods for Flow Rate of Metal Powders Using the Carney Funnel, determines flow necessary for precise quantity of powder to be introduced into die. It is useful in measuring flow characteristics of relatively fine tungsten powders, said Frank Venskytis, and will serve as complement to B213, Test Method for Flow Rate of Metal Powders. SME provides solutions to help manufacturers be sustainable.

A recent SME survey revealed that out of 1,046 professionals, 16% are not sure what environmental footprint means. In response, SME is offering solutions such as Lean to Green Manufacturing Conference, from September 28-30, 2009, with workshop sessions addressing sustainable enterprise and green lifecycle development. NTSB issues recommendations to HEMS industry.

NTSB has issued 10 recommendations to FAA to address improved pilot training; collection/analysis of flight, weather, and safety data; flight data monitoring; development of low altitude airspace in infrastructure; and use of dual pilots, autopilots, and NVIS. It also issued 2 safety recommendations to CMS, 2 to FICEMS, and 5 to public operators. Recommendations are based on accident investigations and testimony at public hearing last February concerning safety in HEMS industry. Read More

RIA provides prevention tips for H1N1 influenza.

According to RIA, hard surfaces can be cleaned with normal household or commercial disinfectant. Some surfaces to pay particular attention to include door knobs, light switches, telephones, and computer keyboards and mice. In rest rooms, trash receptacle should be placed close to door so individuals can use paper towel to open door and then dispose of it properly. During outbreak, touch points in high traffic areas such as door knobs and hand rails should be disinfected several times a day. Read More
