TAG Annual Reports are due by Jan 31, 2010.

Procedures and Standards Administration department of ANSI wishes to remind Administrators of ANSI-Accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Groups to ISO that 2009 TAG Annual Reports are due no later than Jan 31, 2010 to psa@ansi.org. Annual report shall include information on meetings, current TAG membership list, list of problems encountered during past year, express certification by U.S. TAG administrator that TAG operates in compliant manner, and results of self-audit held during past year. ASHRAE launches pilot building energy labeling program.

Known as Building EQ, Building Energy Quotient program will inform building owners and operators, tenants, and prospective buyers on energy use of buildings. Program will include both As Designed and In Operation ratings for all building types, except residential. It will also provide detailed certificate with data on actual energy use, energy demand profiles, indoor air quality, and other information that will enable building owners to evaluate and reduce building's energy use. BIO supports investment in biorefinery projects.

BIO applauded announcement of over $600 million in grants and loan guarantees to help build 19 biorefinery projects to produce advanced biofuels and biobased chemicals from renewable feedstocks. Investment by DOE and USDA shows how important biofuels and biobased chemicals are to economic and energy security of country. According to report by Bio Economic Research Associates, advanced biorefineries could create 29,000 new jobs and $5.5 billion in economic growth over next 3 years. Read More

Proposed Standards cover aspects of fire exposure.

Proposed standard ASTM WK23700 will cover test for resistance of roof field vents to flames and burning embers. Practical application of standard is to effectively subject roof field vents, and potentially ridge vents, to real world exposure to wind-driven flames and burning embers under laboratory conditions. Proposed standard ASTM WK25760 will serve as tool in development of fire test methods to evaluate materials for resistance to ignition and spread of fire from building to building. Read More

Following subcommittee meeting on Jan. 26, 2010, ASTM Subcommittee E10.02 will hold workshop focusing on embrittlement trend curves. APICS releases Operations Management Employment Outlook.

According to third quarterly APICS Operations Management Employment Outlook released by APICS and Cameron School of Business at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, 51% of respondents with hiring responsibility anticipate hiring staff in next 12 months. Of those, 67% anticipate hiring in one or more of the following areas: execution and control of operations, purchasing/customer relationship management, quality, resource planning, and supply chain management. Industrial Controls Index ticks higher during third quarter.

December 7, 2009

Demand for industrial controls increased moderately during third quarter of 2009, with NEMA's Primary Industrial Controls Index rising 1.6% versus April-June period. However, shipments remain low, with index more than 30% below third quarter of 2008. Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index posted 0.9% increase over second quarter of 2009, but also continues to reflect lackluster demand with 29.5% decline on year-over-year basis. International Tractor Drawbar Standard adopted by ASABE.

With deviations, ASABE adopted ISO 6489-3:2004, Agricultural vehicles - Mechanical connections between towed and towing vehicles - Part 3: Tractor drawbar. This document replaces ASAE S482, Drawbars - Agricultural Wheel Tractors, which was used as the basis for ISO 6489-3. The new standard includes modifications to original ISO document and further harmonizes national and international standardization. Read More

OPC Foundation's Board of Directors voted to add Express Interface to OPC Foundation technology portfolio, complementing OPC UA and COM-based OPC Classic technologies. Based on Microsoft .NET WCF technology, OPC Xi secures reliable access to real-time, historical, and alarm and event based information. It was developed to provide .NET-based migration path from OPC Classic, and may also be used as standard .NET WCF interface for newly developed OPC servers. Read More

AASHTO and Washington State represented at jobs summit.

At President Obama's forum on jobs and economic development, Paula Hammond, secretary of transportation for Washington state and chairperson of AASHTO's Climate Change Steering Committee, told President Obama that transportation investments are creating jobs and helping economy recover. Hammond presented results of survey by AASHTO that lists 9,500 ready-to-go transportation projects worth more than $69 billion that, if funded, can be used to create thousands of jobs. Read More

AIA calls on Congress to address commercial space industry.

December 4, 2009

With U.S. commercial space launch industry facing more competition from abroad, AIA Vice President of Space Systems, J.P. Stevens, led testimony to Congress. Stevens noted that in 2008, 6 of 28 worldwide commercial launches were conducted by U.S. companies. While House has voted to extend government indemnification against 3rd-party liability to end of 2012, indemnification expires at end of December. Stevens called on Senate to act before end of year. Industry Leaders Encourage export modernization reform.

Through a letter written to President Obama, AIA encouraged administration to take action on various initiatives to modernize export control system. Five specific areas of reform are identified that do not require new legislation: improvements to US Munitions List and commodity jurisdiction process, caseload management, Defense Department decision making on technology release, and treatment of unmanned aircraft systems in multilateral Missile Technology Control Regime. NACD Members improved in safety and performance in 2008.

NACD 2008 Membership and Performance Data Report states that 5.2 million chemical distribution shipments were made by NACD member companies, who drove more than 199 million miles throughout 2008. Representing continued commitment to safety, reportable vehicular accidents or spills were reduced by 75.7%, and recordable injuries due to vehicular accidents or transportation spills decreased by 46.2% from 2007. NEMA Motor Shipments Index rises in Q3 2009.

Motors Shipments Index (MSI) increased 1.7% during Q3 2009. However, it reflected weak demand for motors, which lagged nearly 23% behind year ago level, though inflation- and seasonally-adjusted shipments of fractional horsepower motors increased for 2nd consecutive quarter. Although manufacturing sector conditions have improved, boost from inventory cycle could fade in 2010 until growth is sustained by drivers such as consumer spending, business investment, and export demand.
