Atlanta, Portland Adopt Policies on building energy benchmarking.

April 28, 2015

Atlanta City Council unanimously passed building energy benchmarking and disclosure ordinance on April 20. Likewise, Portland, OR City Council unanimously adopted benchmarking ordinance on April 22. In comment, NEMA President and CEO Kevin J. Cosgriff expressed support on behalf of NEMA and its members, "because they will increase transparency and give building owners and occupants information about the true cost of operating their buildings." ASABE Develops Standard for drawbar hitch pin design/testing.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) completed development of standard for designing and testing drawbar pins on agricultural equipment. ANSI/ASABE S625, Drawbar Pin Dimensions and Requirements for Towed Equipment, establishes dimensional and minimum strength requirements for agricultural drawbar hitch pins used in single point attaching of towed machine to towing machines or leading machines. BIO commends Judiciary Committee's review of Innovation Act.

According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, BIO supports the efforts of the House Judiciary Committee to curb abuse of the patent system. However, BIO is concerned that H.R. 9, the Innovation Act of 2015, goes beyond targeting abusive practices, including with respect to its excessive pleading requirements, mandatory stays of discovery, and mechanisms for joinder of third-party investors, licensors, and collaborators in all patent-related cases. BIO Supports Trade Promotion Authority on multiple issues.

Upon introduction of Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2015, statement released by BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood commended Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Paul Ryan (R-WI) for introducing a "carefully crafted bill." Greenwood specifically noted reauthorization of Trade Promotion Authority, effects regarding ongoing U.S. trade negotiations in Asia and Europe, and return of U.S. to global trade leadership. BIO announced Gregory Crawford, dean of the College of Science at University of Notre Dame, as one of 5 finalists (out of 100+ nominations) in University/Research category of Everyday Superheroes program. According to BIO International Convention president Scott Whitaker, Crawford was recognized "for his efforts in raising awareness and more than $1M in research and clinical trial funds … for Niemann-Pick Type C disease." BIO announced its selection of Representative Leonard Lance (R-NJ) as Legislator of the Year for 2015. In addition to calling Lance "a champion of America's biotechnology industry," BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood noted Lance's leadership on such critically important issues as Medicare Parts B and D as well as introducing FDA Safety Over Sequestration Act. AMCA and CETIAT sign independent accredited lab agreement.

AMCA International and Centre Technique des Industries Aérauliques et Thermiques announced joint signing of an independent accredited laboratory agreement. Effective immediately, CETIAT can perform precertification tests, check tests, and challenge tests per the AMCA Certified Ratings Program as an AMCA independent accredited laboratory. Annual EPA U.S. GHG Inventory shows slight increase from 2012.

April 23, 2015

U.S. EPA released its 20th Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks, which shows 2% increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2013 from 2012 levels and 9% drop since 2005. By sector and magnitude, largest contributors to total U.S. GHG pollution were power plants (31%), transportation sector (27%), and industry and manufacturing (21%). Increase was due to greater energy consumption across all sectors in U.S. economy and greater use of coal for electricity generation. Read More
