NTSB Study shows ECP brakes out-perform other systems.

Produced by NTSB, Train Braking Simulation Study has been placed into investigation docket regarding derailment of crude oil unit train in Casselton, ND. Study shows Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brake systems out-performed distributed power configurations, which out-performed conventional brake systems. Detailed description and analysis of each rail braking system, along with stopping distances they achieved under various circumstances, are included. Read More

ELFA's Economic Activity Survey shows new business rising.

August 5, 2015

Reporting on economic activity of $903 billion equipment finance sector, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for June at $9.5 billion. This is up 4% from June 2014 and 34% from May. Year to date (YTD) cumulative new business volume increased 9% compared to 2014. Receivables over 30 days were 1.1%, and charge-offs remained at 0.2%. Also, credit approvals totaled 79.4%, up from 79.2% in May. Separately, MCI-EFI for July is 62.6. Read More

BIO applauds bipartisan renewable chemical legislation.

August 5, 2015

BIO expresses thanks to Representatives Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Richard Neal (D-MA) for introducing H.R. 3390, which provides renewable chemical producers access to production or investment tax credits currently available to other renewable energy producers. According to BIO's Brent Erickson, by creating level playing field in tax policy, U.S. industrial biotech companies can innovate and develop new renewable chemicals for production of bio-based products. AAMA releases updated methods for exterior wall test.

August 4, 2015

AAMA has updated and released a document specifying test methods, specifications, and field checks used to evaluate structural adequacy of wall systems and their ability to resist water penetration and air leakage. AAMA 501-15 is intended to be referenced in current laboratory and field testing methods for exterior wall systems comprised of curtain walls, storefronts, and sloped glazing. Document updates also take into consideration new technologies for equipment used for testing. Read More

AASHTO Urges Congress to work on multi-year highway bill.

August 4, 2015

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) was grateful that Congress approved 3-month extension of funding for Highway Trust Fund and urged House to follow Senate’s lead in approving multi-year authorization. Due to expire October 29, short-term patch provides $8 billion from general fund to prevent immediate shutdown of Highway Trust Fund. This marks third time in 10 months Congress kept Highway Trust Fund solvent via passage of short-term extension. Read More

EPA Reaches Agreement to stop use of TCE in spray fixative.

August 4, 2015

U.S. EPA reached an agreement with PLZ Aeroscience Corporation (Addison, IL) to voluntarily phase-out use of trichloroethylene (TCE) in aerosol arts and crafts spray fixative product, used to provide water repellant and protective finish, by September 1, 2015.  Also, EPA is issuing proposed Significant New Use Rule (SNUR) under TSCA requiring anyone intending to initiate manufacture (including import) or processing of TCE for said uses to notify EPA at least 90 days before doing so. Task Group Seeks Input regarding transition to new tire standard.

Expected discontinuation in manufacturing of standard-reference test tire will lead to changes to ASTM International standard E1136, Specification for P195/75R14 Radial Standard Reference Test Tire. Task group will explore best ways to transition from E1136 tire to alternate reference tire. One possibility is F2493, Specification for P225/60R16 97S Radial Standard Reference Test Tire. All E1136 users are encouraged to join in efforts to determine steps and timeline for said transition. Read More

NEMA Lauds Congressional Actions to advance energy legislation.

August 3, 2015

NEMA President and CEO Kevin J. Cosgriff praised passage, by 18-4 vote, of Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015 by Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee as "a welcome and positive step." This legislation incorporates NEMA-supported provisions within portions of S 720, Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2015. Also, NEMA welcomed Senate Finance Committee's July 21 action advancing legislation to renew and extend 52 tax incentives that expired at end of 2014. Read More

BIO Submits Comments regarding EPA's proposed rules for RFS.

August 3, 2015

BIO submitted comments on EPA's proposed rules for 2014, 2015, and 2016 Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS). In said comments, BIO makes clear that uncorrected course will cause program to continue to undermine goals and requirements of statute, undercut investment in advanced and cellulosic biofuels, and raise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in transportation fuel sector. NEMA's EBCI shows improving business conditions, expectations.

August 3, 2015

Following 3 consecutive months of decline, NEMA's Electroindustry Business Conditions Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America rose to 67.5. While 10% of panelists reported worse conditions, equal share (45%) reported better or unchanged conditions. EBCI for future North American conditions also rose to 55.0 in July. While 50% of panelists expect unchanged business conditions over 6 month period, 30% expect better conditions, and 20% foresee worsening business environment. Read More

Donald H. Ferguson has been President of Lyngsoe Systems Ltd., based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, since it was established in 2001 by its parent company headquartered in Denmark. In Canada, Lyngsoe Systems Ltd. operates a radio frequency identification test center and R&D facility, which is considered one of the leading RFID innovators in the world. HI and BSB Edge enter into joint standard reseller agreement.

Joint business agreement entered into by Hydraulic Institute (HI) and BSB Edge on July 13, 2015 grants BSB Edge license to market and sell ANSI/HI pump standards, guidelines, and guidebooks globally. Calling said licensing agreement, "a key component in HI’s strategic plan for continued global growth," HI's Michael Michaud noted BSB's "solid reputation" for servicing industrial and municipal end-users and expressed anticipation for working with BSB in existing and new markets. AIA Praises Senate Passage of Ex-Im Bank amendment.

Citing support and global marketplace advantages of Export-Import Bank of United States, Aerospace Industries Association President and CEO David F. Melcher said AIA is "very pleased" regarding Senate passage of Transportation Bill with Ex-Im Bank Amendment. Melcher also urged House to include Senate Ex-Im language and "put an end to the acrimonious and unnecessary debate over reauthorization of an institution that House Republicans voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize only two years ago." North American PCB Business saw rebound in June 2015.

According to June findings from North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program, IPC announced increases in sales and orders as well as strengthened book-to-bill ratio (1.06). Total North American (NA) PCB shipments increased 4.0% from June 2014, improving year-to-date (YTD) shipment growth to -0.8%. PCB bookings grew 13.7% compared to June 2014, increasing YTD order growth to 3.6%. NA PCB sales, in first for 2015, exceeded 2014's, and order growth was strongest in 8 months. Read More
