ASABE to revise standard for combine testing.

January 26, 2016

ASABE has initiated a project to revise ANSI/ASAE S396.2, Combine Capacity and Performance Test Procedure. Standard is being revised to clarify wording and to consider the incorporation of new practices for performing loss testing on combine harvesters. ANSI/ASAE S396.2 will also be compared with ISO 8210:1989, Equipment for harvesting -- Combine harvesters -- Test procedure, to determine whether information from the ISO document should be included in S396. ASTM Honors Michael Gold for work on nonferrous metals standards.

ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys presented Gary M. Kralik Distinguished Service Award to consultant Michael Gold of Gold Metallurgical Services LLC (North Benton, OH). Specifically, committee noted Gold's service as member (since 1979) as well as key contributions to Subcommittee on Refined Nickel and Cobalt and Their Alloys (B02.07). Gold is also active on Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel, and Related Alloys. Read More

Fracture Mechanics Medal presented to Dr. Richard Link.

ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture has honored Richard E. Link, Ph.D., a professor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, with the Fracture Mechanics Medal. A member of ASTM and E08 since 1985, Link received award in recognition of his outstanding work in advancement of fracture mechanics technology and contributions to related international standard test methods. He is past vice chairman of the committee and currently chairs Subcommittee on Fracture Mechanics. Read More

NEMA publishes phase-cut dimming standard.

NEMA published NEMA SSL 7A-2015 Phase-Cut Dimming for Solid State Lighting—Basic Compatibility. Standard provides compatibility requirements when forward phase-cut dimmer is combined with one or more dimmable LED light engines (LLEs). An LLE, for purposes of this document, comprises one or more LED modules, LED control gear (integral or remote), and connection to mains circuit. Revision eliminates category differentiation of Type 1 and Type 2 dimmers, and clarifies test condition language. Read More

EPA 2014 TRI Report shows 6% decrease in total disposal, releases.

January 25, 2016

According to U.S. EPA's 2014 annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report, 84% of 25 billion pounds of toxic chemical waste managed at U.S. industrial facilities was not released into environment due to use of such preferred waste management practices as recycling, energy recovery, and treatment. Remaining 16% was released to air, water, or placed in some type of land disposal – most of which are subject to regulatory requirements designed to limit human and environmental harm. Read More

IPC Study shows slight upturn in salary increases for 2016.

Reporting on data from 162 U.S. and Canadian EMS and OEM facilities, IPC’s 2015 Wage Rate & Salary Study for the North American Electronics Assembly Industry shows nominal upturn in salary increases from 2015–2016. In 2015, participating companies’ organizational wage and salary budgets increased at an average rate of 2.5% for hourly employees and 2.0% for salaried and management employees. Projected increases for 2016 are just slightly above last year’s increases. Read More

NIST launches national competition to make robots more agile.

NIST is launching ARIAC—the Agile Robotics for Industrial Automation Competition, a joint effort with IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering. Simulation-based competition aims to inspire applications of the latest advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies to solve the challenge of making robots more capable, versatile, and collaborative, as well as easier to program. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) launched World Smart City online community to help city stakeholders worldwide make cities smarter. This is part of IEC's lead-up to first World Smart City Forum — partnership between IEC, ISO, and International Telecommunication Union (ITU). New program launched by NIMS, Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT), and Ivy Tech Community College will train community and technical college instructors as well as industry trainers in industrial technology maintenance (IMT). Scheduled in 2016 from March 21–23 and April 18–20, ITM workshop series will train instructors on how to implement industrial technology maintenance industry standards into curriculum and deliver related NIMS credentials to their students. Revised from ANSI/AMCA Standard 500-L, ANSI/AMCA Standard 500-L-12 (Rev. 2015) establishes uniform laboratory test methods for louvers and includes test procedure for rating sand louvers. Revised from AMCA Publication 511, AMCA Publication 511-10 (Rev. 2015) dictates proper presentation of data and other required technical procedures for certification of air control devices under AMCA Certified Ratings Program and adds sand louver certification. Glass-based UV Absorbers act as Biological Shields.

Group of researchers in China has developed a new method to create transparent, glass-based materials with UV–absorbing power and long lifetimes. Team demonstrated that the new metal oxide glass effectively protects living cells and organic dyes, and believe it could also be developed as a transparent shield to protect electronics in space. Based on self-limited nanocrystallization of glass, method team developed is described in Optical Materials Express, a journal of The Optical Society. Addition of sand louvers to AMCA Certified Ratings Program enables comparison of manufacturers' ratings for sand rejection based on test data in accordance with ANSI/AMCA Standard 510-L (Rev. 2015) Laboratory Methods of Testing Louvers for Rating. Tests for sand rejection are being conducted by Thomas Bell-Wright International Consultants in Dubai.
