ASTM Committee on Corrosion of Metals honors Dr. David Silverman.

For contributions in application of engineering fundamentals to corrosion issues, ASTM International Committee G01 on Corrosion of Metals honored David Silverman, Ph.D. with Francis LaQue Memorial Award. Silverman joined ASTM in 1981 and was active G01 member until retiring in 2013. Silverman worked on several G01 groups, chaired select subcommittees, and served on joint ASTM/NACE Committee on Corrosion as well as Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials. ASTM Standard covers drug-coated cardiovascular balloons.

Proposed standard ASTM WK46148, Guide for Acute Durability of Drug-Coated Balloons, will cover evolving medical technology that merges established angioplasty balloon catheter technology with active drug coatings. Purpose of standard will be to provide consensus on suggested test methods for the acute characterization of drug-coated balloons. Primary users of ASTM WK46148 will be device developers, third-party testing facilities, academic groups, and regulatory agencies. Read More

STA Event tests large storage systems builds with 12 Gbps SAS.

SCSI Trade Association (STA) announced successful completion of its 16th SAS Plugfest. In total, 21 companies (both STA members and non-members) participated. According to SAS Plugfest Technical Committee co-chairperson Michael Koffman, this event "was notable for the group of tests that verified the interoperability of systems of multiple SAS end devices connected through multiple SAS expanders" as well as "testing the interoperability of systems implementing SAS Power Management." ASTM Standard covers high fluidity zinc aluminum alloy.

Thinner cell phone casings and business card holders are just two of the varied applications for a new high fluidity zinc die casting alloy. This casting is now covered by ASTM B989, Specification for High Fluidity (HF) Zinc-Aluminum Alloy in Ingot Form for Thin Wall Die Castings. Producers of the HF alloy will be the primary users of ASTM B989, while it may also be used by die casters, original equipment manufacturers, and commercial analytical laboratories. Read More

ASTM Committee approves standard for intumescent coatings.

Intumescent coatings produce an insulating char when activated by heat or flame. Such coatings are designed to safeguard structural integrity of steel under fire conditions and to maintain safe temperatures for specified period of time. ASTM E2924, Practice for Intumescent Coatings, will cover specifying, manufacturing, testing, labeling, transportation, delivery and storage, installation, and inspection of intumescent fire-resistant materials to structural steel.
