Providing an overview of the development of PCI Express as a point-to-point pathway between peripheral cards and the computing core, this paper details how the architecture and higher bandwidth of PCI Express yield major increases in achievable frame rate and image size for machine-vision applications, as well as simplifying the implementation of multi-channel capability. The software compatibility and the connection flexibility offered by the PCIe bus are highlighted, detailing the various PCIe implementation challenges. Approaches for design of a peripheral card for a PCIe system are examined, and the PCIe applications in machine vision are explained.
