International Cord Ratings

Explaining the theory behind the sectional approval of a power cord, this paper points that the cord is approved separately in different sections like the plug, the wire, and the connector. It highlights that even though all countries are using the same IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards the perfection of approval agencies could be different. The paper details that according to IEC 60799 5.2.2., the connector rating should always be less than that of the attached plug, and briefs why the plug and the wire are approved, but not the connector along with a few examples. It reviews how the cord ratings differs from North America and other countries, and also details how one can find a cord that's approved for those countries with a C19. Paper concludes that having a plug with higher rating could aid the approval of C19 connector in most countries.
