Reviewing the innovations of sensor design with respective of standards made by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), this paper explains how thermal dispersion technology has created a new paradigm in measuring the mass flow rate of gases. It presents in-line and insertion as the two primary configurations of thermal mass flowmeter, and briefs the principle of operation of a typical traditional dispersion mass flowmeter. Paper overviews how the new innovations like four sensors design, and dry sensor technology are aiding for much higher performance of flowmeters, and lists the changes such as gas mass flow rate and flow profile which can be managed by advanced microprocessor-based flow measurement.
