Auto ID in the Material Handling Industry
Focusing on the material handling industry, an overview of the different technologies used in auto-ID systems from bar codes to RFID are provided in this paper. It includes a basic description of the technologies, its benefits and limitations, and guidelines on designing a system. Barcode scanning technology is reviewed including the types of bar code symbols, components, operation, system design considerations, and performance accuracy. Benefits of camera scanning technology over laser scanning are analyzed and design considerations and future applications of camera systems are mentioned. The report studies RFID technology as an evolving automated ID technology and its advantages over barcodes is presented in tabular form. RFID tag construction is illustrated, and characteristics of RFID tags are listed in a table. Protocols and standards applicable to RFID systems are stated, and the step by step process of RFID implementation process is explained. The paper also covers the procedure to be followed to design a quality RFID system and ensure proper operation.
