Sally Ride Science's STEM Central Portal Connects Educators and Students to Resources

Oct 09, 2013

Science education company Sally Ride Science is adding STEM Central to its website as a free resource that provides links to videos, articles, apps, and images about careers and key topics in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students, teachers and other visitors can search STEM categories, or use the advanced search option to find a variety of topics (i.e., the water cycle, plate tectonics, etc.) and resource types (career info, podcasts, etc.). In Phase 2, available Nov. 1, the website will offer resource links submitted by professionals and educators in the field. Links will be peer-reviewed and rated by other educators.

"We think teachers will value what other educators have to say about authenticity and usability of the resources that they find there," said Sheryle Bolton, Sally Ride Science CEO.

The portal, which launched this week, is part of the company's effort to extend its STEM resources.

The company currently offers face-to-face development programs for teachers and classroom materials for students, said Bolton. "Now we are moving all of this online to reach more users and provide a more engaging learning experience for teachers and students," she wrote in a statement.

STEM engagement through online and other resources is crucial to get the younger generation interested in the fields. According to a recent study by The Junior Achievement USA and the ING U.S. Foundation, less than half of 1,025 students who participated in a recent survey expressed interest in a STEM or medical-related job.
