XO Communications Selects Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System for Nationwide IP Network Upgrade

o Initial Deployment Will More Than Double IP Network Capacity

o Core IP/MPLS Network Will Have Multi-Terabit Routing Capability

o Addresses Growing Demand for Bandwidth and XO's Expansion into the IP Transit Services Market

HERNDON, Va., Dec. 3 -- XO Communications, a leading provider of 21st century communications for businesses and communications service providers, today announced that it will significantly expand the capacity of its nationwide IP/MPLS network based on the Cisco IP Next Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture to meet the growing demand for high-speed Internet access services and support its expansion into the high- capacity IP Transit services market. The expansion will more than double current capacity and sets the stage for a four-fold increase, while providing the ability to scale to a multi-terabit capable router complex.

XO Communications will deploy the Cisco® CRS-1 Carrier Routing System in the core of its nationwide IP/MPLS network to support a broad range of services, including high-speed Dedicated Internet access, IP Transit, IP-VPN and VoIP services for businesses, large enterprises and service providers. In addition to delivering increased capacity, the CRS-1 platform will also deliver greater performance and reliability, reduce operational expenditures and provide a more cost-effective platform to deliver high-capacity IP network services.

"Our goal is to deliver the most advanced network infrastructure that enables XO to maintain and strengthen our leadership in providing innovative IP services for our enterprise and service provider customers," said Randy Nicklas, chief technology officer at XO Communications. "By investing in our IP network with the latest technology, we can respond quickly to the increased demand we are seeing for more bandwidth and continue to pursue new opportunities that will drive revenue with an improved cost basis."

"We are extremely pleased that XO has chosen the Cisco IP NGN architecture as the basis of its expansion and that it has selected the Cisco CRS-1 for the core of that expanded network," said Kelly Ahuja, vice president and general manager for the core routing business unit at Cisco. "This expansion will help XO continue to meet its customers demands, despite the unprecedented rise of Internet traffic due to video and other advanced applications."

The upgraded XO IP/MPLS network will enable XO Communications to meet the rise in demand for the high-capacity IP network services market from large enterprises and wholesale service provider customers as the company expands more aggressively into the IP Transit services market. The XO IP/MPLS network is designed to offer customers -- including cable companies, content providers, enterprises, international telecommunications companies and other service provider -- robust and scalable network solutions at high-bandwidth levels to help them manage their growing Internet traffic at speeds of up to 10 Gbps.

The upgrade of the XO IP/MPLS network follows a recently completed expansion of the XO long-haul transport network to deliver a broader range of high-capacity network transport services, including Ethernet, Private Line and Wavelength services. XO Communications recently deployed an additional 800 Gbps of capacity in core XO long-haul network nodes on major coast-to-coast network routes. This additional network capacity augments a capacity expansion the company completed last year which delivered 400 Gbps of capacity across the entire XO long-haul network.
