Xilinx Programmable Chips Bring Automotive Infotainment to the Masses

Leading Programmable Chip Provider Enables Faster Adoption of In-Vehicle Multimedia Networks

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 9 // -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX), the automotive industry's leading programmable chip provider, today announced that its low-cost programmable solutions will enable the adoption of automotive infotainment applications currently found only in luxury vehicles, to lower- priced premium and midline vehicles in the near future.

The new Xilinx solutions, based on the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST®) networking protocol for automotive electronics, will accelerate the integration of consumer/home electronics into lower cost vehicles by providing automotive designers with a flexible, cost-competitive, faster time-to-market solution. The inherent flexibility of Xilinx solutions allows Tier One automotive electronics suppliers to quickly customize their applications, while targeting multiple OEM automakers.

"Today, sophisticated automotive multimedia networks with integrated DVDs, rear-seat entertainment, digital displays, and driver safety features are currently pervasive only in luxury vehicles," said Mustafa Veziroglu, general manager of the Market Specific Products Division at Xilinx. "With competitive forces entering the market, it is simply a matter of time before these systems are routinely installed in premium and midline vehicles, as the cost of implementation steadily declines."

According to analysts(1), multimedia networks are forecasted to grow to as many as 31 million nodes, representing $100 million dollars in potential revenue by 2010. "The lack of competition in the MOST bus chipset market has kept pricing high and has been a factor in limiting broad industry uptake," said Ian Richards, director of Automotive Electronics Research at Strategy Analytics. "The effect of having new competition enter this market will re- invigorate innovation and reduce node costs. Both these factors will drive a wider adoption of MOST outside of the mainly European OEMs. Xilinx, with its complete solution is well poised to drive further adoption of multimedia networks and make it available to a wider audience."

About MOST

MOST is widely acknowledged by the automotive industry as the network of choice in automotive infotainment. Developed by the MOST Cooperation, (founded by BMW AG, DaimlerChrysler AG, Audi AG, Harman/Becker and SMSC), it has seen the greatest penetration in Europe as cost and the proprietary nature of the solution has stifled rapid adoption in other regions. New competition offering next generation solutions, such as MOST over copper wire, is expected to reinvigorate the automotive multimedia market, driving further growth of the MOST standard.
