ERNI Electronics Now Offers Complete ERmet ZD Portfolio

New Support for ATCA and CompactPCI Express

ADELBERG, GERMANY - October 23, 2007 - ERNI Electronics has complemented its ERmetZD range of straight male connectors and right-angled female connectors with the addition of new right-angled female connectors in 2, 3 and 4 contact pair versions. The product family has been extended with new straight female connectors (4-pair version), evaluation kits and the ERmet ZD cable connector system. These components together encompass a complete high-speed connector portfolio that is specified for the ATCA, CompactPCI Express, and other industry standards.

The connectors are available with pressfit termination, two connection levels and three pressfit pin lengths suitable for a variety of board thicknesses. The L-shaped shield also provides excellent shielding and ensures stable mating in conjunction with the precentering pins. The layout supports installation with conventional 2mm HM connectors in compliance with IEC 061076-4-101.

The right-angled ERmet ZD male connectors in the 4-pair configuration (10 contact wafers, 80 signal contacts, module length 25 mm) may be used as Zone 3 connectors (for backplane rear I/O) for the AdvancedTCA Standard together with the Zone 2 connector (right-angled ERmet ZD female connector for data transfer). When combined with ATCA Power Connectors (Zone 1), also available from ERNI, the company can now function as a one-stop shop for all connectors to meet ATCA design specifications.

The 3-pair and 2-pair versions of the right-angled ERmetZD male connectors are designed to supplement the 2 mm HM product line (ERmet) for differential high-speed applications. ERNI offers a complete range of connectors for the CompactPCI Express standard that service both the signal (ERmet ZD 3-pair version, ERmet Type B8) and the Power side (UPM).

ERmet ZD cable system

Within the ERmet ZD cable system for the transmission of high-speed signals, a special manufacturing process allows each individual signal pair to be connected with a shielded high-speed cable. The cable production process uses special materials that allow data to be transmitted through the entire system without distortion, with little cross talk and without sudden changes in impedance. The cables are individually assembled according to the desired requirements, taking into account variables such as data rates and cable length. The ERmet ZD cable connectors are available with either five wafers (interlockable) or ten wafers (no interlocking). The corresponding ERmet ZD cable headers ensure connection on the board side.

ERmet ZD

ERmetZD connectors were specially developed for differential high-speed signal transmission in telecom applications with data rates of up to 10 Gbits/s. This robust, high-quality modular connector system is also very well suited for use in combination with the 2 mm HM (IEC 61076-4-101) ERmet line of connectors. The special design of the signal and ground contacts ensures simple and economic conductor track routing. The ERmetZD connector utilizes an optimal grid construction that reduces signal interference and offers more room for conductor track routing. Its optimized design and effective shielding allow the ERmet ZD system to exhibit superb performance when faced with cross talk and reflections. Signal and ground contacts have different connection levels, ensuring reliable mating.

ERNI has recompiled the entire ERmet ZD product range, including the versions for the ATCA and Compact PCI Express standard, and produced a new catalogue that can be downloaded from the website at www.erni.com/DB/PDF/ERmetZD/ERNI-ERmetZD-e.pdf.
