Woven Metal Mesh Proves Ideal Material for Rooftop Stairway Enclosure at New Delta Toronto Hotel

MUKWONAGO, WI - Situated in the heart of the city and overlooking Lake Ontario, the new Delta Toronto Hotel is a contemporary and convenient hub for out-of-town guests – not to mention, a new city landmark. Its 46-story glass tower adds a sleek accent to the Toronto skyline. To complement the hotel’s tower, Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects specified Banker Wire mesh for the hotel’s adjoining rooftop parking garage stairway enclosure.

When searching for the perfect material for the enclosure, Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects chose woven wire mesh because of its beauty, durability, and versatility.  Soon after, they chose to work with Banker Wire because it was the mesh manufacturer that could make their concept a reality.

“In our search for woven wire mesh, we instantly found Banker Wire,” says Stephen Hood, Senior Principal and Senior Designer for Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects. “The information and supporting materials they provided made it easy to specify and design with their product.”

Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects specified Banker Wire’s LPZ-62 mesh pattern. LPZ-62 is a lockcrimp/plain crimp combination that caters to a wide variety of applications with it’s simple aesthetic. This mesh has a wire diameter and density combination that creates visual character and is easy to work with.

Banker fabricated the LPZ-62 material into a panelized metal framing system. Each mesh panel was built into Banker’s U-Edge frame with a detailed tab configuration to help the installer easily attach the system to the enclosure structure.

Banker’s Canadian Representative, Rieger Architectural Products, provided the installer with product information and support throughout the project. This eliminated any unnecessary challenges for the architect and allowed a simple transition from design to reality.

“Banker Wire was very helpful throughout the design process. Their support, along with a top-quality product, made this project a success,” says Hood. “We wouldn’t hesitate to work with Banker again.”

The end result is a sleek and sophisticated stairway enclosure, like that of the hotel’s main tower. The mesh panels are also illuminated with flood lighting at night, and will eventually allow vines from the surrounding “urban forest” to grow, intertwined in the openings created by the pattern’s weave.

The Delta Toronto Hotel was completed in late 2014. The project team included owner British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (bcIMC), Victoria, BC, Canada, developer GWL Realty Advisors, Toronto, ON, Canada, architect Page + Steele/IBI Group Architects, Toronto, ON, Canada, general contractor EllisDon, Toronto, ON, Canada, Banker Wire Canadian Representative Rieger Architectural Products, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, and installer Modern Railings Metalcraft Ltd., Aurora, ON, Canada.
