World's Lowest Power Consumption 1 Micrometer Optical Transmission Module Samples Now Available from Furukawa and OFS

SAN DIEGO, March 22 - OFC/NFOEC 2010, Booth 1023 - Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and the U.S.-based OFS, Specialty Photonics Division, are pleased to announce they have begun supplying samples of a 1 micrometer optical transmission module to key customers, who are expected to employ the new technology in cloud computing applications. Cloud computing and other internet activities have created an urgent need for enhancing transmission speed between servers and transmission equipment. The product is designed to achieve ultra-high bit rates through compact high-density mounting and parallel optical transmission by using an eye-safe 1 micrometer band vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). This system is capable of board-to-board optical transmission capacity in excess of 10 Gbits/s per channel. In testing, the module has achieved a transmission distance of 300 meters at 120 Gbps while maintaining the world's lowest power consumption < 0.84 W (equivalent to 7 mW/Gbps) at case temperatures from +15 to 80 degrees C. Its compact size also allows mounting on circuit boards or integration into various optical transceivers of Multi Source Agreement (MSA) configuration.

Furukawa and OFS will be exhibiting at OFC/NFOEC, Booth #1023 beginning March 22, 2010.
