World's First Control Room Simulator for a Multi-Unit Nuclear SMR Uses Technology from GSE Systems

Sykesville, Md. – Real-time, high-fidelity simulation technology from GSE Systems, Inc., (NYSE MKT: GVP) is featured in the world’s first prototype of a small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear plant main control room. The SMR project, led by NuScale Power LLC, provides a new generation of nuclear power plants that offer a safer and simplified design.

Based in NuScale Power’s Corvallis, Ore., facility, the main control room simulator employs 12 reactor modules using GSE’s JADE simulator technology in a prototype of a 12-unit nuclear power plant operated from a common control room. GSE’s advanced modeling tools including RELAP5-HD, JTOPMERET, JDesigner and JControl were used to develop this simulator.

NuScale is using the simulator as the platform for the development and demonstration of a new approach to power plant control rooms that will validate operational concepts including human system interfaces prior to construction. The simulator will also allow NuScale to demonstrate the concept of operations for a multi-unit, single control room SMR to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which is responsible for approving the SMR design. This type of approach to human factors engineering may become standard procedure for designing new power plants as stronger regulations and precautionary measures are enforced worldwide.

This project is one of many groundbreaking solutions GSE has contributed to in recent years. “GSE has been involved in numerous energy industry firsts, helping customers with preconstruction design support including integrated gasification combined cycle plants and several new reactor plant designs,” said Jim Eberle, CEO of GSE Systems.

About NuScale Power LLC

NuScale Power LLC, is developing an inherently safe, modular, scalable commercial nuclear power technology. Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR), a global engineering, procurement and construction company with a 60-year history in commercial nuclear power, is the majority investor in NuScale.  NuScale’s design offers the benefits of carbon-free nuclear power, but takes away the issues presented by the cost of installing large capacity. A nuclear power plant using NuScale’s technology is comprised of individual nuclear power modules; each produces 45 megawatts of electricity with its own combined containment vessel and reactor system, and its own designated turbine-generator set. A power plant can include as many as 12 NuScale integral PWR modules to produce as much as 540 megawatts. The reactors are cooled by the natural convection of water and can be shut down safely without pumps or other mechanical systems.  NuScale power plants are scalable – additional modules are added as customer demand for electricity increases. NuScale’s technology also is ideally suited to supply energy for district heating, desalination and other applications.  For more information visit: www.nuscalepower.com.
