World Expo Passenger Aircraft Painted with Aerospace Coatings from PPG

Visitors experience vibrant Expo atmosphere before arriving in Shanghai

BEIJING - The 2010 World Expo in Shanghai has proven to be a great success, with more than 40 million people from all over the world having visited. Many of these visitors were transported to Shanghai aboard the World Expo passenger aircraft owned by China Eastern (CES) airlines. DESOTHANE® high-solids polyurethane topcoat by PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG) helped to give passengers a glimpse of what the Expo has to offer even before they arrived in Shanghai by making the aircraft appear colorful and vibrant.

CES has supplied six passenger airplanes for the World Expo for two purposes, to advertise and provide services. All six are painted and protected with Desothane HS polyurethane topcoat by PPG Aerospace, which offers high solids content, low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), excellent UV durability and a high-gloss finish. The coating is also easy to apply in a range of environmental conditions. Aerospace coatings by PPG are certified for use on Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Embraer aircraft, and they cover China's first regional jet, the ARJ21 or Xiangfeng, as well as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay airplane.

The six World Expo passenger airplanes have different themes, such as "Expo 2010 Volunteer" and "Eyes of the Expo," some of which were voted as favorites in an online "Your Favorite Expo Plane" poll. To better reflect each design concept, PPG technicians matched around 30 colors, including exclusive Expo colors such as Expo Green, Expo Orange and Haibao Blue. In addition, PPG matched six unique shades on top of the standard colors for the event. The biggest challenge for PPG was completing the color matches within a short time. Its success in doing so demonstrates PPG Aerospace's leading position in the industry as well as the company's capabilities for product development and productivity. In addition to creating the color schemes, PPG also worked closely with China Eastern's engineering team to help create satisfactory designs.
