Wireless Monitoring System Protects Server Storage Centers

Temperature, Humidity, and Pulse Monitoring Keep Servers Safe

CHESTERLAND OH - To stay in business, data centers and server providers have to work constantly to ensure the performance of both their servers and their temperature control devices. Effective ambient room monitoring supported by temperature and humidity sensors placed in hot zones is a must. Another significant danger is posed by leaking AC units and pipes, so it's often necessary to place water sensors under each cooling unit and on the lowest points of the floor. To help data centers optimize their IT equipment reliability in the midst of record-high temperatures, CAS DataLoggers offers its Wireless Temperature and Humidity Data Loggers along with Wireless Pulse Data Loggers at only a fraction of the cost these businesses could otherwise experience from data loss or equipment damage. Users can combine these dataloggers to form a distributed monitoring system with the flexibility to handle several different risks to their storage equipment. These automated solutions work with a wireless base station to send their data to an office PC and even send warning reports via e-mail.

The following thermal ranges are safe for server storage: 59°F-89.6°F (15°-32°C). Temperature above that window soon causes memory failures as the hard disks and data gradually become corrupted. Semiconductor devices are very temperature-sensitive, and high temperatures will also affect your systems by causing CPU issues which cause programs to fail and shorten equipment lifetime. Likewise, the humidity level in server rooms needs to be kept within 40% and 60% RH. Excessive humidity will gradually corrode your equipment, eventually causing failures. On the other hand, a low-humidity environment causes static electricity buildup.

The external sensor on each combination temp/RH datalogger is placed on a server rack or beneath an AC unit and will begin measuring and recording both the temperature and humidity levels. Each of these wireless units has a temperature measuring range of 0°C to 55°C (32°F to 131°F) and a humidity measuring range of 10% to 95% RH. Effective monitoring requires placing these units at 3-6 points per rack for adequate coverage of hot spots. The loggers measure in both Celcuis and Fahrenheit on a clear LCD display, with options for wall mounts. Each temp/RH unit has an 8,000 data set memory and a battery life of about 10 months that can be upgraded to last about 4 years.

Additionally, Wireless Pulse Data Loggers are available for connection with water sensors, adding another level of protection for your servers. These units are designed to record the changes in pulse count for contact signals (such as switches, relays, and thermostats) and Lo/Hi voltage signals that occur
during a set recording interval. The device is also capable of recording the total pulse count from the start of recording and allows for a variety of commercially available sensors to be connected to the included input module. Measuring voltage signals from 0 to 27V with a pulse response, this logger features wireless capability and a large 16,000 reading storage capacity so users can keep logging for extended periods.

Wireless datalogger communication on all models ranges out to 150 meters (500 feet), and their data can be collected remotely via USB, GSM technology, LAN and handheld data collectors. Current readings and recorded data are wirelessly downloaded from the data loggers via communication with a Wireless Data Logger Base Station, and then by connecting them to a PC with a USB cable, the data is easily downloaded to an office computer. Alternatively, all the data can be sent by e-mail or FTP to a designated address. The wireless base station also includes FREE software for automated download, real-time monitoring, and email alarm. Users can set the Warning Monitoring Function so that if the set upper or lower limits are suddenly exceeded and that occurrence has been judged by the datalogger to qualify as a warning, a Warning Report Mail containing warning details is immediately sent to up to four specified addresses.
