Original Press Release:

Trapeze Networks Outpaces Cisco and Aruba Networks with Highest Performing 802.11n Wireless Access Point

PLEASANTON, Calif., May 21 -- Trapeze Networks(TM), the award-winning provider of Smart Mobile(TM) wireless solutions, today announced the Mobility Point(TM) 432 (MP-432), a new class of wireless access points based on the high-throughput IEEE 802.11n standard. The MP-432 will deliver the highest possible performance in the wireless local area network (WLAN) industry, providing data rates six to seven times greater than current-generation access points. The MP-432 extends the superior performance and cost benefits of Trapeze's Smart Mobile architecture compared to WLAN offerings from Cisco Systems and Aruba Networks, reinforcing Smart Mobile as the industry's only 802.11n-ready enterprise Wi-Fi solution.

"Enterprise customers are eager to deploy 802.11n wireless networks that can deliver higher throughput to support massive volumes of data, voice, and video traffic, but many are concerned that their existing WLAN switching infrastructure cannot handle the increased load," said Jim Vogt, President and CEO, Trapeze Networks. "The MP-432 sets the standard for 802.11n capabilities and leverages the intelligent Smart Mobile architecture, providing the only enterprise-class 802.11n solution that runs on existing switching infrastructure without requiring expensive forklift upgrades."

Highest Performance 802.11n Access Point

The dual-radio MP-432 utilizes state-of-the-art 802.11n features, such as true 3x3 multiple input/multiple output (MIMO), frame aggregation, and 40 Mhz channels. It is able to simultaneously operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, at 300 Mbps per band, for a total data rate of 600Mbps. The MP-432 employs sophisticated optimization techniques to reduce overhead and improve performance dramatically. As a result, the MP-432 will deliver the highest possible performance of any 802.11n access point in the industry.

Standards-based Interoperability

The MP-432 fully adheres to industry standards and complies with IEEE 802.11n draft 2.0. The MP-432 is Wi-Fi certifiable when the Wi-Fi Alliance launches its 802.11n certification program in June, ensuring interoperability with standards-based Wi-Fi networks and components. It fully supports all legacy technologies-802.11a/b/g-and is voice ready, with Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) certification, enabling seamless voice deployments with no network imbalance or overload problems.

Runs with Existing WLAN Controllers-No Forklift Upgrades Required

The MP-432 leverages Trapeze's unique Smart Mobile architecture, which enables wireless traffic to be forwarded at the access point layer without having to pass through a WLAN controller. As a result, the 802.11n-based MP- 432 delivers dramatically higher throughput, while placing virtually no additional burden on the wireless switching infrastructure. Trapeze customers will therefore be able to deploy MP-432s in their existing networks without having to upgrade their WLAN switching infrastructure, resulting in significant cost savings.

This is in contrast to vendors such as Cisco Systems and Aruba Networks, whose centralized wireless architectures require all traffic to pass through a central controller. As Cisco and Aruba customers deploy 802.11n access points, they will likely exceed the throughput ratings of current generation Cisco and Aruba controllers, and will have to incur costly forklift upgrades of their switching infrastructure.

Compatible with Existing and Emerging Power over Ethernet (PoE) Standards

The MP-432 is the only enterprise-class 802.11n access point that runs with existing 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing customers to get immediate 802.11n performance benefits without having to upgrade their existing power sources. In addition, the MP-432 supports the emerging high-power 802.3at PoE standard.

Farthest Range and Most Coverage

The MP-432 incorporates Trapeze's unique internal antenna design, which provides optimal range and surround coverage. As a result, the MP-432 provides the farthest range and best coverage of any 802.11n-class access point in the industry. This is in contrast to rabbit-ear antenna designs from other vendors, which result in spotty, suboptimal range and coverage, often requiring significant end user configuration to tune RF attributes.

Easiest to Manage

The introduction of higher-powered 802.11n access points into an existing enterprise Wi-Fi network may create RF conflicts than can require extensive readjustments for proper RF coverage without interference. While these readjustments can be very challenging and time-consuming for WLANs with rudimentary network management tools such as those from Cisco and Aruba, they are extremely easy to perform using the RF planning capabilities of RingMaster, Trapeze's industry-leading network management system.

MP-432 Key Features

The Trapeze MP-432 (802.11n access point) includes the following key features:

o Two radios (one 802.11a/n and one 802.11b/g/n)

o Smoke detector form-factor (fits inconspicuously into any environment)

o Simultaneous dual-band operation (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)

o 3x3 MIMO in both bands

o 300 Mbps per band data rate (600 Mbps total)

o 40 Mhz channel width operation

o 2 Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports

o Adaptive frame aggregation

o Adaptive fallback algorithms to automatically adjust data rates

o Block acknowledgements to improve performance

o Short guard intervals to optimize channel efficiency
