Original Press Release:

New Fanuc Wire EDMs Completely Redesigned for Exceptional Speed, Accuracy, and Reliability

SUDBURY, MA - For their new iD Series wire EDM machines, FANUC started from scratch. Completely redesigned from the ground up, these machines deliver superior cutting speeds, accuracy, and surface finishes - all with the exceptional reliability for which FANUC is known.

New iD Series machines feature a beefier, CAD-designed cast Meehanite base that is thermally insulated and 40% more rigid than previous models. Table travels were increased with no load overhang during table movement, providing high rigidity even for heavier workpieces. Heavy-duty 1.26" (32 mm) ball screws for the X and Y axes are double-anchored and encapsulated in "bellows" style covers to prevent contamination. Even the ball screws for the U and V axes are 0.79" (20 mm) in diameter.

iD Series machines are equipped with FANUC's most powerful EDM CNC control yet - the 310iS-WA. Features include a Windows® operating system, a 15.1" LCD touch screen, easy-to-use split-screen graphics with increased drawing speed, on-board interactive parts/maintenance assistance, and the ability to transfer program files through a USB memory stick/card or Ethernet network.

The FANUC AWF - the world's fastest, most reliable auto wire feed system - has been entirely redesigned. A new Air Jet wire transport system in the upper annealing pipe improves accuracy, reliability, and speed. The patent-pending twin-servo wire-tension-control system ensures the highest possible part accuracy and quality by reducing tension variations to ¼ that of conventional machines.

Patented FANUC R Series adaptive-control technology counts real-time effective discharge pulses in the cutting gap and continuously adjusts discharge energy density and gap, providing optimum machining speed and control on complex workpieces with steps or corners, even in poor flushing conditions on the toughest materials. Digital nano interpolation and corner control ensure smooth cutting and accurate part geometry. New servo-driven tank valves ensure that the water level automatically follows the Z axis position, preventing lines on the work surface - common with conventional machines - caused by the opening and closing of solenoid valves.

FANUC technology development continues to focus on maximizing cutting speed with standard economical brass wire. While 0.010" (0.25 mm) high-precision round diamond guides are standard, iD Series machines also accommodate guides for 0.004-0.012" (0.1-0.3 mm) wire. Optional guides for 0.002" (0.05 mm) wire are available as well.
