STMicroelectronics Introduces Lowest Noise Operational Amplifier for High-End Medical and Instrumentation Applications

Ultra low noise, wideband op-amp in tiny package will improve performance of
high-speed data acquisition systems

Geneva, April 13, 2006 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) today announced availability of a new, ultra low noise, wide bandwidth operational amplifier - the TSH300 st.com/stonline/products/literature/ds/11606/tsh300.htm - which is intended for high end industrial, medical and instrumentation applications. Its typical noise value (Equivalent Input Noise Voltage) of 0.65nV/sqrtHz is thought to be the lowest in the industry for a wide band amplifier in the tiny SOT23-5L package, or in SO-8.

The device is the eighth new product in ST's high-end operational amplifier family to be launched in the past 12 months - each device in the family offers a unique performance feature, such as the ultra low noise of the TSH300, in addition to the wide bandwidth of all the devices.

The TSH300 features low input noise of 0.65nV/sqrtHz, coupled with a bandwidth of 200MHz at a gain of 5V/V (GBP=1GHz). With its high slew rate of 230V/µs and very good linearity (SFDR of 55dBc, measured with a 10MHz output sine wave of 2Vp-p into a 100 ohm load), the TSH300 is a perfect component in analog-to-digital converter (ADC) interface applications. Its ultra low noise performance and wide bandwidth have been achieved using a very fast 0.25 micron complementary bipolar manufacturing process. The TSH300 is ideal for use in systems such as sensor preamplifiers and ultrasound imaging, where very small and very fast signals need to be amplified with high gain, without adding significant noise and while preserving a very good signal-to-noise ratio.

The amplifier is stable for gains greater than 5, enabling it to be used at high gain values for small amplitude input signals. Its topology allows it to be used in inverting mode with excellent frequency response, providing good performance when combining two devices in the differential configuration. Voltage feedback architecture allows the use of reactive elements in the feedback loop, as required for many filter topologies. It operates from 4.5V to 5.5V on either single or dual supplies.

The TSH300 is specified for operation over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range, and is available in volume now in SO-8 and the space saving SOT23-5L packages, priced at $1.50 each for quantities up to 5,000 units.
