MediaTek Announces World's Smallest Single-Stream 802.11n Wi-Fi Solution for Mobile Devices

HSINCHU, Taiwan, -- MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, today announced its most advanced Wi-Fi chip designed to enable internet access and peer-to-peer multimedia sharing with smallest footprints and longest battery life for mobile and portable devices. The MediaTek MT5931 integrates 802.11n Wi-Fi MAC, baseband, radio, embedded CPU, and power management unit in a single chip with extremely compact size and power efficiencies, making it the best solution to meet growing high-speed connectivity demands among a wide range of mobile or portable devices.

The MediaTek MT5931 single chip SoC, measures less than 9mm^2 in a chip scale package and further integrates PA, LNA, and T/R switches on one chip, making it ideal for applications seeking compact design with few external components. Advanced Wi-Fi features like STBC, Wi-Fi Direct, and Hotspot mode are fully supported to meet the dynamic changes in Wi-Fi infrastructure and provide superior user experience.

SR Tsai, General Manager of the Wireless Connectivity Business Unit at MediaTek said, "MediaTek is one of the leading companies to offer highly integrated Wi-Fi SoC solutions for a wide range of portable and mobile devices. The MT5931 was designed to meet the industry's Tier 1 requirements, such as low energy consumption for long battery life, a very compact footprint for the highest level of flexibility in PCB designs, and low system manufacturing costs to make Wi-Fi an affordable feature for various segments of consumer electronics devices. With the introduction of the MT5931, legacy consumer devices can easily be migrated to Wi-Fi enabled smart devices with minimum design and manufacturing efforts."

The MT5931 has entered mass production and shipping to major customers in large quantities now.
