When Water Savings Equals Cost Savings

A study by Annette L. Stumpf of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center reports that replacing a 1.0 gallon per flush (gpf) urinal with a waterless urinal can save as much as $875 per year based on 75 uses per day using water rates in Seattle, Washington.

According to Stumpf, this reflects the deferred cost of 27,375 gallons of water per year with a new urinal or 95,812 gallons per year for an older 3.5 gpf urinal.

The study also considered the cost of maintaining the waterless systems with replacement fluid or sealant and/or cartridges.

However, even with these costs, "[the] waterless alternative would yield a net savings of between $130 and $830 each."

Although not in Stumpf's report, it is worth noting that cartridges, like those used in Waterless No-Flush urinals, last longer than others and are some of the least expensive, resulting in even greater savings.
