Wheelabrator Plate and Structural Steel Preservation Line

LaGrange, GA - (September 25, 2007) - The Wheelabrator® Preservation Line is a fully integrated system to prepare plate and structural steel for storage or immediate use. This system processes work from the pre-heating stage through to blast cleaning and application of a prime coat to the blasted surfaces.

Wheelabrator Preservation Lines are popular in shipyards and large steel service centers due to their versatility in being able to process plates as well as structural steel.

Steel surfaces are first dried, preheated and then shot blasted and painted automatically before being dried in a hot air tunnel. Preparing the steel surface prior to blast and paint dries up moisture from the plate surface and increases plate temperature to accelerate drying after primer coating.

Wheelabrator Preservation Lines are available for a variety of work widths, a factor that determines the number of centrifugal blast wheel units. Plate and structural steel transported on inline roller conveyors are exposed to multiple, direct drive 12-bladed EZFIT® wheels. These wheels are strategically located for even distribution of abrasive over the entire width of the plate and around structural profiles from both sides simultaneously. Wheel horsepower determines the process line speed which is typically variable between 5 and 10 FPM.

Photo sensors upstream to the pre-heating equipment sense the work width and height and thereby select the appropriate number of blast wheels. This ensures proper utilization and prevents unnecessary wear of equipment. To ensure consistent paint spray application, while keeping paint transfer as efficient as possible, Wheelabrator paint systems utilize product sensors to monitor and control the paint spray gun operation. Blast cleaning steel reduces wear on cutting tools including band saws and drill bits thus reducing production costs.
