Caterpillar Updates 928G Wheel Loader and IT28G Integrated Toolcarrier to Reduce Emissions, Improve Operator Comfort

Caterpillar has updated the 928G Wheel Loader and the comparably sized IT28G Integrated Toolcarrier. The two machines share a common design, except for their front linkages. The wheel loader has a standard Z-bar linkage, ideal for high-production digging and loading, while the integrated toolcarrier uses an 8-bar parallel lift linkage with an integral quick coupler that accommodates a variety of work tools. Both updated models now feature electronically controlled engines that boost horsepower by 6 percent, increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The appearance of the two machines has also changed. The operator's station has been redesigned, and new features have been incorporated to make the 928G and IT28G more compatible with the environment.

With their size, power, performance and interchangeability of work tools, the new 928G and IT28G work productively and cost effectively in many applications, including material handling, waste handling, recycling, truck loading, site preparation, agriculture and landscaping.

Advanced power train technology
The new 928G and IT28G are powered by an electronically controlled Cat® 3056E Direct Injection Turbocharged (DIT) engine with Air-to-Air After Cooling (ATAAC). The engine is rated at 131 net horsepower (97.8 kilowatts). It has one of the lowest fuel consumption rates in its size class and meets EPA Tier 2 emissions requirements. The engine's 48 percent torque rise allows increased power during heavy-duty use. Low cylinder pressure rise and low peak pressure enhance reliability and durability. The cooling system and engine are located in separate compartments to minimize sound levels and improve service access. Cooling is provided by an "on-demand" hydraulically driven fan that helps reduce sound and boost fuel economy. Improved sealing of the engine doors and fine mesh air-intake screens minimize debris in the cooling cores, extending intervals between cleaning. An automatic reversing fan option with manual override is available for high airborne debris environments.

The engine delivers power through a field-proven Cat transmission with full on-the-go directional and speed change capabilities. The transmission features a new Electronic Clutch Pressure Control for smoother shifts and reduced wear on components. Variable Shift Control adds a part throttle setting to the standard Autoshift function for improved fuel economy and better load control. Maximum travel speed for both machines is 23.4 miles per hour (37.7 kilometers per hour).

Improved Operator's Station
The cab on the updated 928G and IT28G includes a new instrument panel with easy-to-read white-faced gauges and expanded warning, indicator and diagnostic functions. New standard features include a speedometer, odometer, tachometer, gear and gear direction indicator.

A single, low-effort joystick for lift and tilt functions reduces operator fatigue, and the standard integrated directional control switch on the joystick enhances productivity. When working in constant engine speed applications, the operator can set desired rpm at the touch of a button.

The cab is quiet, roomy and well ventilated to increase operator comfort and productivity. The viewing area to critical areas has been increased. The standard seat provides excellent support and is fully adjustable to accommodate operator preferences. The cab features plenty of storage space and can be customized with a 12-volt converter, sun visor and rear-window sunscreen, external mirrors and auxiliary lighting packages.

Two new options for both the 928G and IT28G include the Caterpillar® Machine Security System for theft deterrence and Product Link, a system for monitoring machine functions and location remotely.

Environmentally Responsible Design
Several features make the new 928G Wheel Loader and the IT28G Integrated Toolcarrier environmentally friendly machines. The electronic engine improves fuel efficiency, while reducing emissions and sound. The machines can use Cat biodegradable hydraulic oil. Their genuine Cat hydraulic components help prevent fluid leaks. The engine oil, transmission and hydraulic filters are positioned vertically for easier removal without spills. Extended fluid change intervals also reduce the risk of spills, while reducing waste oil and operating costs. All major components are designed to be rebuilt, conserving natural resources and reducing life cycle costs.

Proven Design Features
The updated 928G and IT28G retain the best features of their predecessor models. Each is equipped with a high-efficiency hydraulic system, matched to the power train for optimal performance and productivity. The system provides precise, responsive, low-effort control. A dual circuit control valve for lift and tilt functions is standard on both machines. One additional valve can be added to the 928G, while the IT28G can accommodate two extra valves. All control valves are stacked and located at ground level for easy modification. Standard pressure taps help speed hydraulic system diagnostics.

The linkages on both machines have also been retained. The 928G's standard Z-bar linkage accommodates a variety of general and special-purpose buckets. The 8-bar parallel lift linkage on the IT28G has an integral quick coupler for fast tool changes. It keeps work tools such as pallet forks level throughout the entire lift range--without operator adjustment--and permits better load control, more height and more reach than conventional wheel loaders.

The new models continue to be easy to maintain and service. Engine enclosure doors lift almost effortlessly. All daily maintenance can be accomplished from ground level. Key service points are grouped for convenience and easily access from the ground.

Sight gauges allow quick visual inspections and reduce the opportunity for contamination. SoOoS(sm) (Scheduled Oil Sampling) valves permit faster, cleaner sampling. A swing-out cooling fan cuts cleaning time and provides full access to both sides of the cooling cores. Other serviceability features include extended fluid change intervals, adjustment-free brakes, a maintenance-free drive shaft and self-diagnostic capabilities.
