What’s up? Upfeed Displays are What’s up: The Next Generation of Retail Displays

Vulcan Spring is proud to showcase their variable force springs designed for vertical upfeed displays. Upfeeds are a fairly new concept in the Point-Of-Purchase display industry. Over the past several years Vulcan has made a significant contribution to the prevalence of these innovative solutions in the POP space.

The standard horizontal pusher displays are a great way to utilize shelf space in grocery or retail stores. But are they the best option for shoppers and beverage stores who have limited shelf space with high product diversity?

Depending on your industry, we believe vertical upfeed displays may be the best option to optimize space. Just take a look at your local beer store, where upfeed displays are a popular solution for making the most of a crowded space.

As an example, beer stores are generally packed with cases of beer and ciders of multiple varieties. From 6 packs to 24 packs, saving space is critical. The good news is, upfeed displays are a great space saver because they allow floor space to be optimized.

When it comes to upfeed displays, we tend to use four variable force springs per display. Based on the product dimensions and individual/total weight of the product, our engineers are able to determine the shape of the variable force springs and their force profile.

Another factor to take into consideration for spring design is friction. Due to the product having to go against gravity, this influences the spring design as well, specifically force requirements.

When it comes to display orientation a pusher plate connects to the walls of the display. Then, the variable force springs go through the plate and are installed at the top of the display. Room needs to be left so that friction can be minimized. Friction is a killer to upfeed display’s intended function, which makes these steps critical.

Once the upfeed display is built, products are then organized in the display. The number of products depends on the total travel distance of the pusher plate, upfeed display height, and the height of each product.

When a customer grabs the top product out of the upfeed, ideally the next case will smoothly rise up and take over, while resting in the same position the last product was previously at.

Overall, upfeed displays can provide a desirable function for ease of shopping, product marketing, and better utilization of space within various stores spanning over several industries.
