Welding End Prep Tool Removes Tube Stubs From Header


A robust, air-powered I.D. clamping end prep tool that produces high torque at low RPM for milling hardened welds found in the tube stubs on a header assembly is available from ESCO Tool of Medfield, Massachusetts.

The Esco Mini MILLHOG® End Prep Tool features a heavy-duty mandrel with clamp ribs that will not flex and is capable of milling hardened welds that have been exposed to high heat and pressure cycling. Strong and rigid, it clamps to a tube I.D. which has been cut close to the header and can then evacuate the weld from around the tube stub in preparation for a new tube.
This tool can be reinserted using a different blade and create a tube seat.

Running at 34 RPM and generating 1,200 ft.-lbs. of torque at the cutter blade, the Esco Mini MILLHOG® End Prep Tool uses TiN coated blades which produce a clean, continuous chip without cutting oils. Designed for heavy wall tube from 1.25" I.D. to 6.625" O.D., this pneumatic end prep tool has a single gear drive with an opposed tapered roller bearing for high strength and rigidity, and a self-centering automatic draw rod assembly.
