PHILADELPHIA - During hot summer months, nothing beats a glass of chilled lemonade. In a move designed to refresh thirsty backyard barbecue revelers, picnic goers and athletes, Weis Markets has launched a line of lemonades in clear PET carafes from Constar International LLC, a leading global producer of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic containers for food and beverages.
Constar is supplying Country Pure Foods with 59-ounce (1.89 liter) PET carafes for two SKUs, Raspberry Lemonade and Lemonade. The beverages are produced and bottled by Country Pure Foods for Weis Markets. The PET carafe is featured on Constar's new online stock container catalog.
With the introduction, Weis Markets joins a sweeping transformation of the refrigerated juice section with beverages moving from traditional paperboard-based gable-top cartons to clear PET carafes. The motivation is simple: consumers want to see the juice inside the package and PET provides an unimpeded view.
Joseph Koch, marketing director for Country Pure Foods, says clear PET carafes are a perfect vehicle for refrigerated juices like lemonade, limeade and orange juice. "The bright colors are appetizing and consumers are attracted to the product when they can see the juice. A clear carafe is a wonderful marketing tool; the bright yellow, pink, and orange of the actual juice says more about quality than a printed carton ever can," Koch explains.
"As a leading private label supplier, we make sure we offer our customers the latest consumer-preferred packaging. Constar's clear PET carafe is what people want; it's this summer's blockbuster for beverages," Koch adds.

Good looks aside, Constar's clear PET carafes also score points with consumers because of their easy to grip design and shatterproof construction. The slim neck of the carafe makes it easier to handle than cartons. And should an unwary consumer drop the carafe, no harm, no foul, as PET is unbreakable.
PET containers are BPA-free and offer another major advantage: they are fully recyclable. Once empty, consumers simply place PET carafes in curbside recycling bins for recycling into new products such as clothing, tires, carpet, and even packaging. Consumers can also reuse them at home.
Constar's PET carafes offer other benefits as well. Its square shape mimics that of paperboard cartons so the new pack delivers the same efficient use of space on pallets, cubes and on the shelf.
Private labelers and others interested in bringing refrigerated juice in PET carafes quickly to market do not have to wait months for a package to be developed. Constar offers the 59-ounce carafes as a stock item.
